What is a recall date for unemployment - Washington ESD asking for this info

I'm filling out my Washington ESD unemployment application and there's a field asking for my 'recall date' but I have no idea what this means. My employer laid me off permanently due to downsizing - there's no plan to bring anyone back. Do I just leave this blank or put N/A? I don't want to mess up my claim by putting the wrong thing. Has anyone else run into this question?

A recall date is when your employer expects to call you back to work. If you were permanently laid off with no expectation of returning, you can leave it blank or put 'indefinite'. This mainly applies to seasonal workers or temporary layoffs where the company plans to rehire.

That makes sense, thank you! So since my company closed that whole department permanently, there's definitely no recall date.

Yeah I had the same confusion when I got laid off from the hotel during their renovation. They said 6 months so I put that date and it actually helped my claim get processed faster.

Exactly right - if there's no planned recall, just indicate that. Washington ESD uses this to determine if you're on temporary layoff status versus permanently separated. Permanent separations usually have different job search requirements and benefit calculations.

Wait, what do you mean different job search requirements? I thought everyone had to do the same job search activities.

People on temporary recall status with a definite return date within 10 weeks may have reduced job search requirements since they're expected to return to their job. But if you're permanently laid off, you need to meet the full weekly job search requirements.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for three days to ask this exact question! The phone lines are impossible - keeps hanging up on me after waiting for over an hour. So frustrating when you just need a simple clarification.

Have you tried using Claimyr? I discovered it last month when I was stuck in adjudication hell. They handle the calling for you - you just tell them what you need to ask Washington ESD and they get through and call you back with the answer. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

Never heard of that but I'm desperate at this point. Does it actually work for getting through to real Washington ESD agents?

Yeah they got me through to an actual adjudicator within a few hours. Way better than spending my whole day redialing that 833 number. Check out claimyr.com if you want to see their service.

This is so confusing because my employer told me the layoff was temporary but they haven't given me any actual date. It's been 2 months already and no word. What should I put for recall date?

0 coins

If they said temporary but didn't give you a specific date, you should put 'indefinite' or 'unknown'. After 2 months with no communication, that sounds more like a permanent layoff situation.

That's what I was thinking too. I'm starting to look for other jobs because I don't think they're calling anyone back.

Same thing happened to my buddy - they said 'temporary' in March and it's now January with no callback. He ended up having to appeal when Washington ESD initially classified him as temporary recall status.

Does the recall date affect how much unemployment you get? Or is it just for their records?

0 coins

It doesn't directly affect your benefit amount, but it can affect your job search requirements and how Washington ESD classifies your separation reason. Temporary recall status might have different rules than permanent separation.

Good to know, thanks! I want to make sure I fill this out correctly so there are no delays in my claim.

I put a recall date last year because my supervisor said they'd probably call me back in the spring. Well spring came and went, no call. Had to contact Washington ESD to update my status to permanent separation. What a hassle.

0 coins

How did you go about updating that status with Washington ESD? Did you have to reapply or just notify them?

0 coins

I had to call and speak with an agent to update my separation reason. Took forever to get through though - this was during the busy season when everyone was filing claims.

I used Claimyr when I needed to update my claim status last fall. So much easier than trying to get through myself. They handled the whole conversation with the Washington ESD agent and called me back with confirmation that everything was updated correctly.

For seasonal workers like me (construction), we always have approximate recall dates even though they're not guaranteed. I usually put the expected start of busy season and that seems to work fine with Washington ESD.

0 coins

That makes sense for seasonal work. Do you have to update them if the recall date changes or if you don't get called back when expected?

0 coins

Yeah, if the date passes and no callback, I let them know so they don't think I refused work or something. Better to keep them updated.

The whole recall date thing is just another way for Washington ESD to make the application more complicated than it needs to be. Just put what you know and move on - they'll figure it out during processing.

0 coins

I disagree - it's actually important information that affects your claim classification. Better to get it right the first time than deal with delays or appeals later.

0 coins

Fair point. I guess I'm just frustrated with how complicated they make everything when you're already stressed about being unemployed.

If you're unsure about the recall date, you can always call Washington ESD to clarify before submitting your application. They'd rather answer questions upfront than deal with corrections later.

Good luck getting through on the phone though! I've been trying for days and either get disconnected or the wait time is over 2 hours.

I had the same problem until someone told me about Claimyr. They basically call Washington ESD for you and get your questions answered. Saved me hours of trying to get through myself. Worth checking out at claimyr.com if you need to talk to an actual agent.

Interesting, I'll look into that. Anything beats sitting on hold for hours just to get disconnected.

Thanks everyone for the clarification! This thread helped me understand what to put for my situation. Glad I asked before submitting my application.

Same here! Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences. Makes the whole process less confusing.
