What if I forgot to file my weekly Washington ESD unemployment claim - am I screwed?
I'm panicking right now because I completely spaced out and forgot to file my weekly claim yesterday (Sunday). I've been filing consistently for 8 weeks and this is the first time I missed the deadline. My claim status was showing as active and I was getting my benefits regularly. Does anyone know if Washington ESD will let me backdate this or am I going to lose my benefits completely? I tried logging into my account this morning but it's just showing the current week now and I can't see an option to file for last week.

Don't panic! You can usually file a late claim but you need to do it ASAP. Log into your SecureAccess Washington account and look for a 'file late claim' option or call Washington ESD directly. They typically allow backdating for good cause reasons like forgetting, but you need to request it quickly.

•Thank you! I'm trying to call them now but it keeps saying high call volume and hanging up on me. Is there a better time to call?

•Early morning around 8am or try right after lunch around 1pm. The phone system is brutal but keep trying.

•Did they make you wait longer for your payment or was it processed normally?

You should be able to file a late claim through your online account. Look for 'Weekly Claims' section and there should be an option to file for previous weeks. Washington ESD usually allows this for up to one week after the filing deadline, but you might need to provide a reason.

•I looked everywhere in my account but I don't see that option. Maybe it's because it's only been one day?

•It might take 24-48 hours for the late filing option to appear. If you don't see it by Wednesday, definitely call.

I had this exact problem last year and couldn't get through to Washington ESD no matter how many times I called. Eventually found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that calls for you and gets you connected to an actual person. Worked like a charm - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of trying to get through.

•Is that legit? Never heard of it before but I'm desperate at this point.

•Yeah it's totally legitimate. They just automate the calling process so you don't have to sit there redialing constantly. Worth checking out if you can't get through the normal way.

•I used Claimyr too when I had an adjudication issue. Way better than spending hours on hold or getting disconnected.

THE WASHINGTON ESD PHONE SYSTEM IS A JOKE!!! I've been trying to get through for weeks about a different issue and they just hang up on you. This is our tax money paying for this garbage service. Sorry you're dealing with this too but at least your issue should be easier to resolve than mine.

•What's your issue if you don't mind me asking? Maybe someone here has dealt with it.

•They're saying I was overpaid $2,800 from last year but I never got that money. It's been in adjudication for 6 weeks now.

You'll be fine. Missing one week isn't the end of the world. Just make sure you file this week's claim on time and call about the missed week. They deal with this all the time.

•Thanks, that makes me feel better. I was worried they'd think I was working or something.

I work for a workforce development office (not Washington ESD) but deal with UI issues regularly. Missing a filing deadline happens to tons of people. The key is addressing it quickly. Most states including Washington have provisions for late filing within a reasonable timeframe. Don't stress too much but do follow up persistently.

•That's really reassuring coming from someone who works in the system. Should I file this week's claim first or wait until I resolve the missed week?

•File this week's claim on time regardless. Don't let one missed week cause you to miss another one. Handle them as separate issues.

happened to my sister last month. she called and they let her file late but she had to wait like 2 weeks longer for that payment. better than losing it completely though

•Two weeks isn't too bad considering. Did she have to do anything special or just explain she forgot?

•just told them she forgot and they put in the late claim. pretty straightforward

Quick follow-up - when you do get through to Washington ESD, have your claim confirmation number ready and be prepared to explain the circumstances. They typically ask why you missed the deadline and 'I forgot' is actually an acceptable reason for most agents.

•Good to know! I have all my paperwork organized so I should have everything they need.

Check your email too - sometimes Washington ESD sends automated reminders about missed filings with instructions on how to file late. I got one when I missed a week due to being in the hospital.

•Just checked and no email yet. Maybe it takes a day or two to trigger?

•Yeah it's not immediate. Give it 48 hours and if nothing shows up, definitely call.

Ugh this brings back bad memories. I missed TWO weeks in a row because I was dealing with a family emergency and completely forgot about filing. Washington ESD was actually pretty understanding when I finally called and explained the situation. They backdated both weeks.

Sofia Peña
•Wow two weeks and they still helped you? That gives me hope for just missing one.

•Yeah they were surprisingly reasonable. I think as long as you're not trying to file like a month later, they'll work with you.

Pro tip: set up calendar reminders on your phone for every Sunday to file your weekly claim. I learned this the hard way after missing a week early in my claim period.

•That's actually a great idea. I'll set that up right now so this doesn't happen again.

•I do the same thing! Sunday at 10am reminder every week. Has saved me multiple times.

Whatever you do, don't wait too long to address this. I had a friend who missed a week and didn't call for like 10 days and then Washington ESD made it much more complicated to resolve. The sooner you call the better.

•I'm definitely calling today. Been trying since this morning but will keep at it.

If the regular phone lines aren't working, try calling the Washington ESD customer service line for technical issues. Sometimes they can transfer you to the right department and the wait times are shorter.

Sofia Peña
•Do you have that number handy? I've been calling the main UI line.

•It's 800-318-6022 for technical support but they might still transfer you. Worth a shot though.

Just want to add that this is super common especially around holidays or when people have schedule changes. Washington ESD agents deal with missed filing deadlines literally every day so don't feel embarrassed when you call.

•Thanks for saying that. I was feeling pretty stupid about forgetting.

One more thing - when you do file the late claim make sure all your information matches exactly what you would have reported for that week. Same work search activities dates job contacts etc. They'll verify everything matches.

Sofia Peña
•Good point. I keep a log of all my job search activities so I should be able to reconstruct that week accurately.

Update for anyone else reading this thread - Claimyr also helps with these kinds of issues where you need to talk to someone about late filings or missed deadlines. They basically handle the phone maze for you so you can actually speak to a human about your situation.

•How much does something like that cost? Might be worth it if it saves hours of calling.

Brandon Parker
•Way less than you'd think and definitely worth it considering how much time it saves. Check their website for current pricing.

Keep us posted on how this works out! I'm sure other people will end up in the same situation and it would be helpful to know the outcome.

•Will do! Hopefully I'll have good news to report soon. Thanks everyone for the advice and reassurance.

Final thought - document everything when you call. Get the representative's name case number if they give you one and confirmation that they're processing your late claim. Helps avoid confusion later.

•Great advice. I'll make sure to write everything down when I finally get through.

Don't stress too much - this happens to more people than you'd think! I missed a week about 3 months ago and was in the same panic mode. I got through to Washington ESD after trying for most of the day (kept getting the busy signal) but they were actually really helpful once I reached someone. They filed a late claim for me right over the phone and I just had to explain that I forgot due to a schedule change that week. The payment came through about a week later than usual but I didn't lose any benefits. Keep trying to call and make sure you file this week's claim on time regardless. You've got this!
