Can I claim unemployment two weeks in a row if I missed filing last week?
I completely forgot to file my weekly claim last Sunday and now I'm worried I've messed everything up. Can I still claim unemployment for both weeks when I file this Sunday? I've been approved for benefits for about a month now but this is the first time I've missed a filing deadline. My claim status still shows active on the Washington ESD website but I'm panicking that I've lost those benefits permanently. Does anyone know if they let you backfile or claim two weeks at once?

Yes, you can usually claim for both weeks when you file your next weekly claim. Washington ESD allows you to backfile for missed weeks as long as your claim is still active. When you log into your account this Sunday, you should see options to file for both the missed week and the current week.

•Thank you so much! I was really worried I'd lost those benefits forever.

•This happened to me too and I was able to file for both weeks no problem. Just make sure you answer the questions for each week accurately.

I've missed filing before and Washington ESD is usually pretty forgiving about it. You might get a notification or warning but as long as you file within a reasonable time frame you should be fine. The key is to file as soon as you remember.

•That's a relief. I was imagining having to restart my whole claim process.

Just to clarify - when you file this Sunday, you'll need to complete separate weekly claim certifications for each week. The system will walk you through filing for the missed week first, then the current week. Make sure you have your job search activities documented for both weeks since you'll need to report those separately.

•Good point about the job search requirements. I did keep track of my activities so I should be okay there.

•Wait, do we need to do job searches for each week separately? I thought it was just a total count?

•You need to meet the job search requirement for each week you're claiming. So if you missed one week and are filing for two weeks, you need job search activities for both weeks.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to confirm this, I recently discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) which helps you actually reach a human agent when you call. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Might be worth checking out if you need to speak to someone directly about your specific situation.

•Interesting, I've never heard of that service. Is it legitimate?

•Yeah it's legit. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked when I needed to resolve an issue with my claim. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

this happened to me last year and i panicked for nothing... you can definitely file for both weeks just dont make it a habit because eventually they might flag your account for irregular filing patterns

•Good to know it's not a big deal as a one-time thing. I'll definitely set reminders going forward.

One thing to keep in mind is that if you wait too long to file for missed weeks, there might be limits. I believe Washington ESD allows backfiling for up to 4 weeks, but don't quote me on that exact timeframe. The sooner you file, the better.

•I think it's actually longer than 4 weeks but yeah, definitely don't wait. File as soon as possible.

•I'm definitely filing this Sunday, so it'll only be one week late. Thanks for all the advice everyone!

Does missing a week affect your waiting period or anything like that? I'm always paranoid about messing up something with my claim status.

Honorah King
•No, missing a filing week doesn't restart your waiting period or affect your overall claim. You just won't get paid for weeks you don't file for.

•Okay that makes sense. I was worried it would somehow reset the whole process.

Make sure when you file for the missed week that you select the correct dates. The system should automatically show you the right week to file for but double check the dates to make sure you're claiming the right period.

I've been dealing with Washington ESD for months and they're actually pretty reasonable about missed filings. Just file when you remember and you'll be fine. The system is designed to handle this kind of thing.

•Agreed, they know people forget sometimes. It's not like they expect perfect attendance.

Pro tip: set up a recurring reminder on your phone for Sunday mornings to file your weekly claim. I do this and haven't missed a week since I started.

•I have mine set for Saturday night so I remember to do it first thing Sunday morning. Works great.

Just curious - will they pay you for both weeks at the same time if you file them together, or do they process them separately?

Honorah King
•In my experience, they usually process them together if you file them in the same session. You should get one payment covering both weeks.

•Yeah that's what happened when I had to backfile. Got one deposit for both weeks a few days later.

The Washington ESD system is actually pretty user-friendly about this stuff once you figure it out. Don't stress too much about one missed week.

If you're still worried about it, you could always try calling Washington ESD directly, though good luck getting through. The phone lines are always busy. That Claimyr service someone mentioned might actually be worth trying if you really need to talk to someone.

•Yeah I tried calling them once and gave up after an hour of busy signals. Definitely frustrating.

•That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr. It cuts through all that phone frustration and gets you to an actual person.

One week late is nothing to worry about. I've seen people backfile for multiple weeks and still get their benefits. Just don't make it a pattern.

Just remember to be honest about why you missed the filing when you submit. They sometimes ask for an explanation but it's usually not a big deal.

Washington ESD has gotten a lot better with their online system over the years. Used to be much more complicated to handle situations like this.

I missed filing twice in a row earlier this year due to some personal issues and was able to backfile for both weeks without any problems. The system walked me through each week separately and I got paid for both. Washington ESD is pretty understanding about life happening - just make sure you have your job search documentation ready for each week you're claiming. You'll be fine!

•That's really reassuring to hear from someone who's been through a similar situation! I was so stressed thinking I'd messed everything up permanently. Good to know the system handles multiple missed weeks well. I definitely have my job search activities documented for both weeks, so I should be all set. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I had a similar panic attack when I missed my first filing deadline about 6 months ago! The Washington ESD system is actually really forgiving about this - when you log in this Sunday, you'll see both weeks available to claim. The interface will guide you through filing for the missed week first, then the current week. Just make sure you have all your job search activities documented for both weeks since you'll need to report them separately. I got both payments in one deposit a few days later with no issues. Don't stress too much about it - they know life happens and one missed week definitely won't hurt your claim status!
