What happens if you miss a week of unemployment - Washington ESD consequences?
I completely forgot to file my weekly claim last Sunday and just realized it today (Wednesday). This is the first time I've missed filing since I started collecting unemployment 6 weeks ago. What happens now? Will Washington ESD automatically close my claim or can I still file the missed week? I'm really worried because I need these benefits to pay rent. Has anyone else missed a weekly filing and what did you do?

Don't panic! You can still file your missed weekly claim through your Washington ESD account. Log into eServices and look for the option to 'File Weekly Claim for Previous Week.' You typically have up to 4 weeks to file a missed weekly claim before it becomes a bigger issue. Just file it as soon as possible.

•Thank you! I'm logging in right now to check. Do I need to explain why I missed it or just file normally?

•Just file it normally. The system will ask the same questions as usual - whether you worked, looked for work, etc. Answer honestly for that week.

I missed 2 weeks in a row last month because I was dealing with a family emergency and completely forgot about filing. I was able to go back and file both weeks without any problems. Washington ESD didn't penalize me or anything.

•That's reassuring! Were you able to get paid for both weeks normally?

Amara Okafor
•Yes, both payments came through about 3 days after I filed the missed claims. Just took a little longer than usual.

I've been calling Washington ESD for weeks trying to get through about a different issue and it's impossible. If anyone needs to actually talk to someone there, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to unemployment offices. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

•Is that service legit? Seems too good to be true with how hard it is to reach Washington ESD.

•Yeah it's real. I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Got connected to an actual ESD agent instead of getting the busy signal or being hung up on.

•Good to know there's an option if I run into problems with the missed week. Hopefully I won't need it though.

OMG I'm so paranoid about missing my weekly filing! I set like 3 alarms on my phone every Sunday morning just to make sure I don't forget. The thought of losing benefits over something like that gives me anxiety attacks.

•Same! I file mine first thing Sunday morning at 7am every week. Can't risk forgetting.

•Setting reminders is smart, but don't stress too much. Washington ESD gives you some grace period for missed filings as long as you catch up quickly.

The Washington ESD system is so unforgiving about everything else but at least they're reasonable about missed weekly claims. I think they understand people have lives and sometimes forget. Just don't make it a habit!

•True, they're pretty strict about work search requirements and other stuff but missing one week isn't the end of the world.

•Yeah I've been super careful about documenting my job searches every week. This is just the first time I spaced on the actual filing.

Wait, how long do you actually have to file a missed week? Someone told me it was only 7 days after the missed deadline or your claim gets closed automatically.

•That's not accurate. You have up to 4 weeks to file most missed weekly claims. After that it becomes more complicated but your claim doesn't automatically close.

•Oh good, whoever told me that was wrong then. Thanks for clarifying!

I missed a week about 3 months ago and when I went to file it, the system asked me to verify some information before I could complete the filing. Nothing major, just confirming my address and phone number. Took an extra 2 minutes but no big deal.

•Did that delay your payment at all or did it process normally once you verified?

Ava Martinez
•Nope, payment came through on the normal schedule. The verification was just a quick security check.

Pro tip: you can actually file your weekly claim anytime between Sunday at 6am and Saturday at midnight. A lot of people think you HAVE to file on Sunday but you have the whole week. I usually file mine on Tuesday or Wednesday when I remember.

•Wait really?? I thought it had to be filed on Sunday! This changes everything for me.

•Yep! The 'week ending' date is what matters, not when you actually file it during that week. You just can't file for a future week.

•That's actually really helpful to know. I was stressing about Sunday deadlines but having the whole week makes it much more manageable.

Does missing a weekly claim affect your job search requirements? Like do you still need to show 3 job contacts for that week even if you file it late?

Liam Sullivan
•Yes, you still need to meet the job search requirements for that week when you file the missed claim. The requirements don't change just because you filed late.

•That makes sense. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't off the hook for that week's job searching.

I work part-time while collecting benefits and I missed filing one week when I was working extra hours. When I went back to file it, I just reported my wages for that week like normal and everything processed fine. The partial benefit calculation worked the same as always.

•Good to know it doesn't mess up the partial benefit calculations. I don't work part-time but that's useful info for others.

The Washington ESD website says you should file missed claims 'as soon as possible' but doesn't give a specific deadline. I think the 4-week thing mentioned earlier sounds right based on what I've heard from others.

•Yeah their website could be clearer about the exact timeframes for missed filings. Typical government website - vague when you need specifics!

I missed filing once because I was in the hospital and couldn't access a computer or phone. When I explained the situation to Washington ESD later, they were understanding and there were no issues with filing the missed week.

•That's good to hear they're reasonable about legitimate emergencies. Hope you're doing better now!

•Thanks! Much better now. The key was explaining the situation when I filed the missed claim.

For anyone worried about this in the future, you can also call Washington ESD to file your weekly claim over the phone if you can't access the website. Though good luck getting through - their phone lines are always jammed.

•That's why I mentioned Claimyr earlier - it's literally the only way I've been able to get through to an actual person at Washington ESD recently.

•I'll have to check that out. I've given up trying to call them directly because it's such a waste of time.

Update: I was able to file my missed week through the eServices portal! It was right there under 'File Weekly Claim' and I just selected the previous week. Super easy and it accepted my filing right away. Thanks everyone for the help and reassurance!

•Great! You should see the payment in your account within a few days. Glad it worked out!

For what it's worth, I've missed filing twice in the past year - once because I forgot and once because the website was down when I tried to file. Both times I was able to go back and file without any penalties or issues.

Mei Wong
•The website being down is so frustrating! At least they don't penalize you for their technical problems.

Amina Diallo
•Exactly. They seem to understand that technical issues and occasional forgetfulness happen to everyone.

This thread should be pinned or something. Missing weekly claims is probably one of the most common worries for people on unemployment. Nice to have all the info in one place!

•Agreed! I was so worried for nothing. Glad I asked here instead of just panicking.

This is such helpful information! I've been on unemployment for about 2 months now and I live in constant fear of missing a weekly filing. Reading through everyone's experiences here really puts my mind at ease knowing that Washington ESD is actually reasonable about missed filings. I'm definitely going to set up multiple phone reminders like some of you suggested, and it's good to know I have up to 4 weeks as a backup if something goes wrong. Thanks for sharing all your real experiences - way more helpful than trying to decipher the vague info on the ESD website!

•Welcome to the community! I totally get that anxiety about missing filings - I think we all feel that way at first. This thread has been super reassuring for me too. One thing I learned from reading everyone's experiences is that setting up a routine really helps. I used to stress about it every week, but now I just file mine every Tuesday morning with my coffee and it's become second nature. The 4-week grace period is definitely a huge relief to know about as a safety net. Hope your unemployment journey goes smoothly!

•Setting multiple reminders is definitely the way to go! I use both my phone and my calendar app to make sure I never miss it. Also, I learned from this thread that you can file anytime during the week (Sunday 6am to Saturday midnight), not just on Sunday like I originally thought. That flexibility makes it so much less stressful. The community here is really great for getting real-world advice that you just can't find on the official websites.
