Weekly claim by phone vs online - is the 48-hour ESD processing time different?

I've been filing my weekly unemployment claims online for the past few months, and I always have to wait at least 48 hours for ESD to process the payment. My internet has been spotty lately, and I'm thinking about using the phone system to file next week instead. Does anyone know if submitting by phone is processed any faster? Or do claims filed by phone still have the same 48-hour processing wait time? Just trying to figure out if it's worth switching methods or if all roads lead to the same waiting period. Would appreciate if someone who's tried both methods could share their experience!

The 48-hour processing time is standard regardless of how you file. I've used both methods (phone and online) over the past year, and ESD treats them exactly the same on their end. The submission method is just about convenience for you, not processing speed. What might be different is when your claim gets submitted - the phone system has specific hours while online you can submit anytime.

Thanks for clarifying! Guess I'll stick with online filing then since it's easier when it actually works. Appreciate the info.

Agree! Phone system is awful. I used it last month when my internet was down and I was literally yelling at my phone because the automated system kept misunderstanding my responses. Never again.

I've used both methods during my unemployment claim and theres ABSOLUTLEY no difference in processing time. The 48 hour wait is just how long it takes ESD's system to process ANY claim regardless of how you submit it. What's more important is WHEN you file. If you submit late Sunday or Monday, it takes longer because thats when EVERYONE files. If you file Wednesday or Thursday it's usually a bit faster because less people are submitting then.

That's a great tip about the filing day - I hadn't considered that! I've been filing on Sundays, which probably explains why it always takes the full 48 hours. I'll try filing midweek next time to see if that speeds things up.

The processing time is determined by ESD's internal systems, not by how you submit your weekly claim. Both phone and online submissions enter the same queue. The standard processing time is 48 hours, but can sometimes be shorter (24-36 hours) during less busy periods. If your concern is getting through to ESD because of internet issues, you might want to try Claimyr (claimyr.com) - it's a service that helps you get through to an actual ESD agent quickly instead of waiting on hold for hours. They have a good video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 showing how it works. I used it when I needed to fix an issue with my claim and couldn't get through the normal way.

I've used Claimyr too and it saved me hours of frustration. But to answer the original question - no, phone filing doesn't process any faster than online filing. The 48-hour window is just ESD's standard processing time for ALL weekly claims, regardless of submission method.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet - if you have any special circumstances or need to report earnings, the phone system is MUCH more confusing than the online system. I tried using the phone once when my laptop was in for repairs and somehow ended up accidentally reporting that I'd refused work (I hadn't). Took three calls to ESD to fix the mess and delayed my payment by 2 weeks. So yeah, processing time is the same but the chance for error is higher by phone in my experience.

Yikes, that sounds like a nightmare! I do sometimes have to report partial earnings, so that's really good to know. Definitely sticking with online filing now.

Filing on Monday instead of Sunday typically delays your payment by one business day. ESD runs their payment processing in daily batches. You can file for the previous week anytime until Saturday, but the earlier in the week you file, the faster you'll get paid. Just don't miss the Saturday deadline or you'll need to request a backdated claim.

I think the whole 48 hour thing is just what they tell us. I've had it process in 24 hours sometimes and other times it takes 72+. Doesn't seem to matter if I use phone or online. Pretty sure it depends more on how busy their system is that week.

YES!! This is exactly my experience too! Last December when everyone was filing before the holidays, it took almost 4 days! But in February when claims were lower, I got paid in just over a day. The 48 hours is just an average they quote, not a guarantee.
