Need to report hours worked by phone? ESD options for weekly claim reporting when website is down

I'm in a really frustrating situation with ESD right now. My internet at home is down for maintenance and I need to report hours I worked this week for my part-time job. Is it possible to report hours worked over the phone when filing my weekly unemployment claim? The library computers near me are always busy and I can't afford to miss my weekly claim deadline. Has anyone successfully reported hours worked through the automated phone system, or do they force you to use the website for that? I'm worried because I worked 16 hours this week and if I don't report it correctly, I might get hit with an overpayment later.

Yes, you can absolutely report your hours worked through the weekly claim phone system! I had to do this for about a month when my laptop died. Call 800-318-6022 and follow the prompts for filing a weekly claim. The automated system will specifically ask if you worked during the week and prompt you to enter your hours. Just make sure you have your total hours ready to enter using the keypad. The system also asks about gross earnings, so have that calculated before you call. It works perfectly fine, just takes a bit longer than the website.

Thank you SO MUCH for confirming! I was getting super anxious about this. Do you remember if it lets you review what you entered before finalizing? I'm always paranoid about hitting the wrong numbers on the keypad.

Ugh that sucks, sorry you had that experience. My phone data is almost maxed out for the month so I'm trying to avoid that option if possible.

The phone system is GARBAGE. I've tried using it 3 times in the past year and each time it either disconnects me, doesn't recognize my responses, or worst of all - it SAYS it accepted my claim but then I check online later and nothing was filed!!! Don't trust it! Find ANY way to file online even if you have to use someone else's device. The ESD has the worst systems ever designed and they don't care how much stress they cause people!!

I've used the phone system multiple times without issues. Maybe you were calling during high-volume hours? I usually call early morning (right when they open) or late evening and it works fine for me. Just make sure you listen to the whole message and wait for the confirmation number at the end.

Here's the deal with reporting hours by phone: 1. Yes, you can report hours worked through the automated phone system (800-318-6022) 2. You'll need your SSN and PIN ready 3. The system will ask if you worked, then prompt for hours and earnings 4. It will read back your entries for confirmation 5. IMPORTANT: Write down the confirmation number they give you at the end One thing to know: the phone system requires you to enter WHOLE hours only - so if you worked 16.5 hours, you should round according to ESD guidelines (16 hours in this case, since it's less than 16.75). If you have any issues with the automated system, you can try using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to reach an actual ESD agent. I used their service when I needed help with a complex reporting situation. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 - way better than fighting the phone tree yourself.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! That's super helpful especially about the rounding for partial hours - I actually worked 16.25 hours so I'll make sure to report 16. I'll check out that service too if I run into problems.

anyone know if you have to report hours even if you don't get paid until next month? my new job pays monthly but i've been working for 2 weeks already

Yes, you must report hours in the week you WORKED them, not when you get paid. ESD cares about when the work was performed, not when payment is received. If you don't report those hours in the correct week, it could result in an overpayment later.

I've been on unemployment for nearly 18 months now (had to switch from regular UI to extended benefits at one point) and I've found the phone system to be fine for basic claims with no special circumstances. BUT if you have anything unusual to report like hours worked at multiple jobs or holiday pay or anything like that, I strongly recommend using the website. The phone system just isn't designed to handle complex situations. It's pretty much designed for people who either worked zero hours or have a simple single-employer situation with regular hours. Just something to keep in mind!

That's a good point I hadn't considered. I only have the one part-time job right now, so it should be straightforward enough for the phone system to handle. Hopefully my internet gets fixed soon so I don't have to deal with this again next week!

I always file by phone and never had problem! Just make sure you listen for the confirmation number at the end and write it down!!! Thats how you know it worked for real

Thanks - I'll definitely make sure to wait for and write down that confirmation number. Seems like that's really important based on everyone's feedback.
