Does ESD verify part-time hours with employers when filing weekly claims?

I just started a part-time job after being on unemployment for 3 months. I'm reporting my hours honestly each week when I file my weekly claim, but I'm wondering if ESD actually contacts my new employer to verify the hours I'm reporting? This is my first time working while claiming benefits, and I'm worried about accidentally making a mistake that could cause problems. I'm only working about 15 hours per week right now, so I still qualify for partial benefits. Does anyone know how ESD checks our reported hours?

Yes, ESD does verify hours and earnings with employers, but not necessarily every week. Employers are required to report quarterly wage information to ESD, and the system will eventually cross-check what you reported against what your employer reported. If there's a significant discrepancy, it could trigger an investigation and potentially lead to an overpayment notice. My advice: keep detailed records of your hours and earnings each week just in case there are questions later. Better safe than sorry!

That makes sense. I didn't realize they do quarterly checks. So theoretically I could be flagged months later if something doesn't match up? I'll definitely start tracking everything more carefully. Thanks!

OMG the ESD system is SUCH a nightmare with part-time work!! Last year I had a part-time job and reported everything correctly, then SIX MONTHS LATER got hit with an overpayment notice for $2,700!!! They claimed I underreported hours but I KNOW I didn't! Took me forever to appeal and get it fixed. Make sure you document EVERYTHING - save paystubs, take screenshots of your weekly claims, everything!

That sounds terrifying! I definitely don't want to end up owing money back. Did you eventually get the overpayment cancelled or did you have to pay it?

It was a nightmare but I finally got it resolved after sending in copies of all my paystubs and timesheets. Took almost 3 months though and I couldn't get anyone on the phone to help!

Thanks for the real-world example - that's helpful to know. Sounds like they do random checks sometimes.

I've been using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to ESD agents when I have questions about my partial employment reporting. Their system lets you skip the hold times and actually talk to someone who can explain exactly what you need to report. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Totally worth it when I was stressing about exactly this issue last month. The agent I talked to confirmed they have a whole department that does wage verification, but they focus more on larger discrepancies rather than small hour differences.

Yeah, it worked for me. I was skeptical at first but I got a call back from an actual ESD agent in about 30 minutes. Way better than spending hours on hold or getting disconnected.

To directly answer your question - ESD has several verification methods: 1. Quarterly wage reports from employers (as someone mentioned) 2. Random claim audits where they may contact your employer 3. Cross-checking with other state databases 4. Employer-initiated verification if they receive notification of your claim The key thing to understand is that you need to report your GROSS earnings (before taxes/deductions) for the WEEK YOU WORKED (not when you got paid). This is where most honest mistakes happen. If you work Monday-Sunday but don't get paid until the following Friday, you still report those hours for the week you actually worked them. As long as you're reporting honestly, you shouldn't worry too much. The system is designed to catch intentional fraud, not honest mistakes.

Thank you for the clear explanation! I've been reporting gross earnings for the correct weeks, so that's a relief. I'm just trying to do everything right and avoid complications.

Update: Wanted to share what happened in case anyone finds this thread with the same question. After 6 weeks of working part-time and claiming, I got a letter from ESD saying they're doing a routine audit of my claim. They asked me to submit copies of my paystubs for verification. Just like you all said - they do check! I'm glad I've been reporting everything accurately. Still waiting to hear back after submitting my documentation.

Thanks for the update! This is the typical process. As long as your reported hours match your paystubs, you should be fine. The review usually takes 2-3 weeks to process.
