First-time ESD claim submitted - how long until eligibility determined?
I just filed my first unemployment claim with ESD on Sunday and now I'm anxiously waiting to hear back. The online information says payment should be processed within 48 hours if I'm eligible, but I have no idea how long it takes to determine eligibility in the first place! I've been trying to call ESD for clarification but the phone lines are completely jammed - can't get through to an actual person. Has anyone gone through this recently? How long did it take for your initial eligibility determination to come through? I'm getting nervous about bills and would appreciate knowing what timeline to expect. Thanks for any insights!

For a straightforward claim with no issues, you should get your eligibility determination within 7-10 days. However, if there's anything that triggers an adjudication (like your employer contesting your claim, unusual separation circumstances, or identity verification), it can take 3-6 weeks. Check your ESD account daily - look for any alerts or messages requesting additional information. If your claim goes into adjudication, they'll notify you through your online account.

•Thank you so much! That's really helpful to know. I'm hoping mine is straightforward, but my former employer wasn't happy when I left, so now I'm worried they might contest it. Will definitely keep checking my account daily.

•3 weeks?! That's so much longer than I was expecting. But thanks for the tip about continuing to file weekly claims during the wait - I wouldn't have known to do that.

The 48 hours they mention is ONLY for processing payment after you've already been approved and filed a weekly claim. Initial eligibility determination is completely different. For my claim in February 2025, it took exactly 12 days for the initial eligibility determination. Make sure you complete your weekly claims during this waiting period - you'll get paid retroactively for those weeks once approved. Also, check your Notices/Letters section in your ESD account daily for any requests for information that could delay your claim.

•this is such an important point! the ESD website is so confusing about the timeline differences between initial eligiblity and weekly payments after youre approved!!! i wish theyd make it clearer for everyone

I've been through the ESD system three times in the past couple years and it's ALWAYS different. First time was 5 days, second time was 4 weeks (went to adjudication), third time was 9 days. It's completely unpredictable. And good luck trying to call them - I spent HOURS redialing only to get disconnected. I finally found a service called Claimyr that got me through to an ESD agent in about 40 minutes. Cost some money but saved me days of frustration. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Totally worth it if you're stuck waiting and need answers from an actual person.

•Is that service legit? I'm always suspicious of third-party services that charge to help with government benefits. Did you have to give them personal information?

•It's definitely legit - they don't access your claim or anything. They basically just solve the phone connection problem by using their system to wait on hold for you, then call you when they get through to an agent. I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying to call for a week straight.

My sister just went thru this last month. She got her eligibility letter in the mail after 2 weeks but then it took another week before money showed up in her account. ESD is super backed up right now from what i heard.

•Thanks for sharing about your sister's experience. I didn't realize they might send the determination by mail - I've only been checking my online account. I'll start watching my mailbox too!

The whole system is broken by design. They WANT people to give up. I waited 5 weeks for my determination, then they denied me for a typo in my employment history, and I had to appeal. The appeal took ANOTHER 6 weeks. Meanwhile they expect you to keep filing weekly claims with no income. It's criminal how they treat people who are already struggling!

•While the system definitely has issues, most claims don't experience these extreme delays. Appeals do take longer because they involve the Office of Administrative Hearings (OAH), which is separate from ESD. For simple eligibility determinations without issues, 1-2 weeks is most common based on current processing times.

One more important thing: eligibility determination and identity verification are two separate processes that happen simultaneously. Many first-time claimants get caught up in ID verification issues that can delay benefits. Make sure you've uploaded clear photos of your ID documents in your ESD account, and respond immediately to any requests for additional verification. This alone can save you weeks of waiting.

•That's really good to know! I did upload my driver's license and social security card when I applied. Is there anywhere specific in my account I should check to see if the ID verification went through okay?

•Check the "Notices/Letters" section of your ESD account daily. If there are any ID verification issues, you'll receive a notice there. Also look at your claim status - if it says "pending" with no further explanation, that's often related to identity verification.

•Thanks for the encouragement! 9 days seems to be close to what others are saying too, so that gives me a better idea of what to expect.
