Best ESD phone numbers to check pending and processing claim status?

I'm completely new to unemployment and filed my first claim two weeks ago (still showing as 'pending') and my second weekly claim just yesterday (shows 'processing'). Feeling a bit anxious since bills are piling up and I really need to know if there's something wrong or if this is normal. What are the most reliable phone numbers to actually reach a human at ESD? I've tried the main number but keep getting the 'high call volume' message and disconnected. Is there a specific time of day that works better? Should I be concerned that my first claim is still pending? Any advice from those who've been through this would be super helpful!

The main ESD claims center number is 800-318-6022, but it's notoriously difficult to get through. Your best bet is to call right when they open at 8am Monday through Friday. For your situation (pending first claim, processing second), this is actually pretty normal - the first claim often takes 2-3 weeks to process even without any issues. The 'processing' status on your second claim is a good sign that the system is working as intended. I'd recommend checking your ESD account for any alerts or messages that might indicate why your first claim is still pending. Sometimes they need additional verification but don't always notify you by phone/email.

Thank you for the info! I've checked my account multiple times but don't see any alerts or action items. Does that suggest everything is moving normally? I was starting to worry maybe they needed something from me but didn't tell me. I'll try calling at 8am tomorrow.

You're right that it can be extremely frustrating. In 2025, they're still using an outdated phone system that simply can't handle the volume. If you need to get through quickly, I'd recommend Claimyr (claimyr.com). It's a service that basically waits on hold for you and calls you back when an agent is available. Saved me hours of frustration when I had an adjudication issue last month. They have a video demo that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3

If your first claim is pending after a week and the second one is processing, it's actually working correctly. The system is set up to process them in order. From my experience working with ESD claims (I help people navigate the system), here's what's probably happening: 1. Your first claim likely triggered an identity verification check (routine for first-time claimants) 2. Your second claim is queued up behind it As for phone numbers, the main ESD line (800-318-6022) is your best option, but call strategy matters more than the number itself. Call Tuesday-Thursday (avoid Monday and Friday), exactly at 8:00am or right after lunch at 1:00pm. Have your claim ID and SSN ready. Alternatively, the technical support line (855-682-0785) sometimes can help with basic status questions, though they're not supposed to.

THIS!!! I went through same thing back in January and my first payment took 3 weeks but then the rest were regular. The identity thing is automatic for new claims now.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO MAKE YOU GIVE UP!!!! I spent 6 WEEKS trying to get through before I finally got someone. By then I had missed 3 weekly filings and they told me TOO BAD, gotta start over. ESD is a complete disaster and they WANT you to fail so they don't have to pay benefits. That's the REAL reason why nobody answers the phones!!!!

my brother had same expereince. waited 2 months and never got paid even tho he was laid off. system is broken af

One more important thing - if you miss filing a weekly claim because you're waiting for the first one to process, you'll have to file for a benefit week restart which adds more delays. Make sure you keep filing every week even if previous weeks are still pending. This is one of the most common mistakes new claimants make.

Oh! I didn't know this. So I should keep filing every week regardless of what happens with my previous claims? That makes sense, but the system is definitely not intuitive. I appreciate the heads up!

Regarding your lack of alerts or action items - that's generally a good sign. When ESD needs additional information, they create an alert in your eServices portal. Without any alerts, your claim is likely just in the standard processing queue. One thing you might want to double-check: did you receive a confirmation email after filing your initial claim? If not, there's a small chance the claim wasn't properly submitted. The current average wait time for first payments is 14-21 days for claims without issues. If you're approaching that timeline, I'd definitely try reaching out. But from what you've described, everything sounds normal so far, just the standard (but frustrating) waiting period for new claims.

Yes, I did get confirmation emails for both claims, so that's reassuring. I'll try to be patient for another week or so. Thanks for explaining the timeline - makes me feel better knowing this is normal, even if it's frustrating!

To directly answer your original question, here are ALL the ESD phone numbers that might help: - Main Claims Center: 800-318-6022 (best chance, but hardest to reach) - Technical Support: 855-682-0785 (limited help with claim status) - Office of Special Investigations: 800-246-9763 (only for fraud issues) - Employer Line: 877-504-5607 (not for claimants, but sometimes agents will help) If your claim has been pending more than 3 weeks, you can also try contacting your state representative's office. They often have ESD liaisons who can look into delayed claims.

This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I'll try the main number first, but it's good to have these backups. I'm on day 12 of waiting for my first claim, so hopefully it processes soon. If I hit 3 weeks, I'll definitely consider reaching out to my representative.
