Can't reach ESD by phone - how to check UI claim status after 1 week?
I filed my initial unemployment claim last week after getting laid off from my accounting job. I've uploaded all the requested documents through eServices and submitted my first weekly claim on Sunday, but I haven't heard anything about my application status. The dashboard just shows "pending" with no additional info. I really need to know if there's something wrong or if I'm missing anything! I tried calling the main ESD number (800-318-6022) but it's just automated menus going in circles. I can't find any option to speak with an actual human being. Does anyone know a direct number to reach a live agent? Or how long it normally takes for them to process new claims in 2025? Getting anxious since rent is due in 2 weeks and I have no idea if my claim will be approved by then.

•3.5 weeks?! I can't wait that long... I have bills coming due. Is there really no way to talk to someone?

Unfortunately, reaching an actual human at ESD is incredibly difficult right now. The standard processing time for new UI claims is typically 2-3 weeks even without any issues. If your claim requires adjudication for any reason, it could take 4-6 weeks or longer. A few tips: 1. Check your Notices/Letters section in eServices daily - they often send requests for information there without notification 2. Make sure you continue filing weekly claims even while waiting for the initial determination 3. Double check that you've completed the job search requirements (3 activities per week) and documented them properly If you absolutely need to speak with someone, try calling right when they open at 8:00 AM. Some people have better luck on Thursdays for some reason.

•this is why the system is broken. they make it IMPOSSIBLE to reach them and then disqualify you if you miss something they never told you about!!!

my brother went though this last month!!! he kept calling that same number over and over like 50 times and finally got put on hold instead of getting hung up on. waited for 2 hours but finally talked to someone. seems like pure luck tbh

•50 times?! I've already tried calling about 10 times today with no luck. This is so frustrating. I just need to know if there's anything wrong with my application or if it's progressing normally.

I had the same issue trying to reach ESD about my adjudication a month ago. After wasting days trying to get through on their main line, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an ESD rep in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 It was worth it for me because I found out there was an issue with my identity verification that I needed to fix ASAP. The agent was able to tell me exactly what documents I needed to upload to move my claim forward.

•Is this legit? Seems sketchy to use a third party service just to call a government agency...

ESD specialist here. One week is actually pretty early in the process to be concerned. The standard processing time for initial claims is currently 10-14 business days without any issues. If there are any discrepancies that require adjudication, it will take significantly longer. Continue filing your weekly claims on time while you wait. This is EXTREMELY important - if your initial claim is approved but you haven't been filing weekly claims, you won't receive benefits for those weeks. As for reaching an agent by phone, the official advice is to call during non-peak hours (typically Wednesday-Thursday afternoons), but in reality, the call volume is consistently high. The online message center in eServices is often more effective than calling, though responses can take 3-5 business days. One thing to check: make sure you've completed the ID verification process through ID.me if prompted. This is often a common holdup for new claims.

•Thank you for the detailed info! I did complete the ID.me verification right after applying. I'll keep filing weekly claims and check my Notices section more frequently. I guess I'll try to be patient, but it's stressful not knowing if everything is on track.

when i had a claim last year i couldn't reach anyone for weeks and then found out they needed some employer info that they never told me about!! my claim was just sitting there the whole time! so frustrating! i ended up having to go to the WorkSource center in person and got help that way after waiting for like 3 hours

•This is a good alternative suggestion. WorkSource offices can sometimes help with basic ESD questions, though they don't have the same level of access as actual ESD agents. Still worth trying if you're completely stuck.
