Impossible to reach ESD representative - keeps hanging up on high call volume

I'm at my wits' end trying to get through to someone at ESD! For the past 2 weeks, I've been calling their unemployment office number, and all I get is the "high call volume" message before it automatically disconnects. I've tried calling right when they open at 8am, during lunch, late afternoon - nothing works! My claim has been pending for almost a month and I need to talk to an actual human being. What phone number are people actually having success with? Is there a secret direct line or extension that bypasses the automated system? I've tried the 8777-ESD-UI01 main number but it's useless. Any advice would be greatly appreciated before I lose my mind!!!

22 times?? I thought my 8 attempts yesterday was bad. This is ridiculous! Did you try any other numbers besides the main one?

There is no "secret" number, unfortunately. The ESD phone system has been overwhelmed since they updated their claims system in January 2025. I've had success using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - it's a service that basically keeps dialing for you and gets you in the queue to speak with an agent. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 I was skeptical at first but it got me through to an agent in about 30 minutes after trying for weeks on my own. My adjudication issue got resolved the same day.

Is that even legit?? Sounds kinda sketchy to me but at this point I'd try anything. Does it actually work or just take your money??

It's legitimate - several people in my WorkSource group used it successfully. It's basically an auto-dialer that navigates the phone tree and holds your place in line. When it connects to an agent, it calls you and merges the calls. Saved me hours of frustration.

I successfully reached ESD last week after weeks of trying. Here's what worked for me: 1. Call the main number (877-ESD-UI01) exactly at 7:58am - don't wait until 8:00 2. When the automated system answers, immediately press 2, then 3, then 1, then 4 in sequence 3. If it says high call volume, hang up and try again immediately 4. It took me 9 attempts in one morning, but I finally got placed in queue The key is calling right before they officially open and using the exact sequence to get to claims specialists. Also, Mondays and Tuesdays are the worst days to call - try Thursday afternoon if possible.

Thank you for the detailed instructions! I'll definitely try this tomorrow morning. Did you have to wait long once you actually got into the queue?

I waited about 40 minutes in queue, but it was worth it. The agent was able to resolve my adjudication issue and release my payments. Good luck!

Try 833-572-8400 thats the disqualification department but they can help with regular claims too sometimes!!! i got through yesterday

That's actually the Special Programs Unit number - they handle standby status and commissioner-approved training claims. They cannot help with regular UI claims or adjudication issues. Calling them will only result in being redirected back to the main number, wasting more time.

The phone system is frustrating by design. I've worked with hundreds of ESD claimants and the most effective approach actually isn't calling repeatedly. Try these alternatives: 1. Use the eServices secure message system - responses typically come within 4-7 business days 2. Visit a WorkSource center in person (bring ID) - they can't resolve adjudication issues but can often tell you what's holding up your claim 3. Contact your state representative's office - they have liaison channels 4. If your claim is in adjudication, understand that constant calling won't speed it up That said, if you absolutely must speak with someone by phone, the specialized services mentioned above (like Claimyr) do work for many people. The key is understanding that ESD is dealing with thousands of claims - persistence and patience are unfortunately necessary.

I understand the frustration completely. While waiting for ESD resolution, check if you qualify for emergency assistance through DSHS or your county's rental assistance program. Many areas have hardship programs specifically for people waiting on unemployment benefits.

UPDATE: I finally got through! Used the 7:58am trick and pressed the number sequence mentioned above. Got placed in queue after my 7th attempt. Waited 55 minutes but finally spoke to a real person who fixed my claim issue. My adjudication was completed while I was on the phone and payments should process tonight. THANK YOU all for the advice!!!

Great news! Glad it worked for you. Did they explain why your claim was held up for so long?

Yes! Turns out there was an employer response discrepancy they needed to verify. The agent said they're severely understaffed in the adjudication department since budget cuts in December. She manually pushed my claim through after confirming my employment details.
