Washington ESD job search requirements - how many job searches needed weekly?
I just started receiving unemployment benefits and I'm confused about the job search requirements. The Washington ESD website mentions I need to do job searches but I can't find a clear number of how many I need to complete each week. Some places say 3, others mention 5. Does anyone know the exact requirement? Also, do volunteer activities count toward this requirement or does it have to be actual job applications? I want to make sure I'm doing this right so my benefits don't get cut off.

You need to complete 3 job search activities per week for Washington ESD. This can include applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, or even informational interviews. Volunteer work doesn't count toward your job search requirement, but it can be beneficial for your resume. Make sure you keep detailed records of each activity including dates, employer names, and what type of search activity it was.

•Thank you! So 3 is the magic number. Do I need to submit proof of these searches with my weekly claim or just keep records?

•Just keep detailed records for now. Washington ESD can audit your claim at any time and ask for proof, so document everything - employer names, dates, job titles, how you applied, etc.

I thought it was 5 job searches per week? That's what my friend told me when she was on unemployment last year. Maybe the requirements changed?

•It used to be 5 during the pandemic but they reduced it back to 3 in 2023. Your friend might be thinking of the old requirements or maybe she was in a different program.

•Oh that makes sense! Thanks for clarifying. I was worried I wasn't doing enough searches.

I've been struggling to reach anyone at Washington ESD to verify my job search activities because I'm in a specialized field and there aren't always 3 relevant openings each week. I tried calling dozens of times but kept getting disconnected or put on hold for hours. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me through to an ESD agent within minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNdC7zQ that shows how it works. The agent was able to clarify that networking and industry research count as valid job search activities for specialized fields.

•That's really helpful about networking counting! I work in a niche industry too so this gives me more options.

•Wait, so Claimyr actually works? I've been trying to get through to ESD for weeks about my job search requirements. How much does it cost?

•It definitely works - saved me so much time and frustration. I'd rather not discuss costs publicly but it was worth it to finally get my questions answered properly.

BE CAREFUL with the job search requirements! Washington ESD is CRACKING DOWN hard on people who don't meet them exactly. I know someone who got disqualified because they counted a phone inquiry as a job search but ESD said it had to be a formal application. The system is rigged against us!

•Phone inquiries do count as valid job search activities according to current Washington ESD guidelines, as long as you document them properly with employer name, contact person, date, and follow-up actions.

•Maybe the rules changed but they disqualified my friend just 3 months ago for exactly this! The system is inconsistent and they change the rules whenever they feel like it.

Here's the official breakdown for Washington ESD job search requirements: 3 activities per week, can include job applications, networking, attending career workshops, informational interviews, or creating/updating professional profiles. Document everything with dates, employer/contact names, and activity type. Keep records for at least 2 years as ESD can audit at any time.

•Does updating LinkedIn count as one of the 3 activities?
0 coins
Declan Ramirez
•Yes, updating professional profiles like LinkedIn counts as a job search activity, but you shouldn't use it as your only activity type. Mix it up with actual applications and networking.

•This is super helpful! I've been overthinking this whole process.

ugh i hate the job search requirement thing.. like sometimes there just arent 3 good jobs posted in my field each week but i still have to apply to random stuff just to hit the number. feels pointless

•You don't have to limit yourself to just applications. Try networking events, informational interviews, or even reaching out to companies that aren't actively hiring but might be interested in your skills.

•yeah i guess.. just feels like busy work sometimes when the jobs arent even in my field

I've been on unemployment for 6 weeks now and just learned about the job search requirement yesterday! No one told me about this when I filed my claim. Am I in trouble? I haven't been documenting anything.

Declan Ramirez
•You should start documenting immediately and try to reconstruct what you can remember from previous weeks. If ESD audits you, explain that you weren't informed of the requirement and show your good faith effort to comply going forward.

•The same thing happened to me! I was so stressed about it but Washington ESD was understanding when I explained the situation. Just start tracking everything now and you should be fine.

•Thank you both! I feel much better now. Starting my documentation spreadsheet today.

Pro tip: create a simple spreadsheet with columns for date, employer/contact, activity type, and notes. Makes it so much easier when you need to reference your job search activities later. I include the job posting URL when I apply online too.

•Great idea about including URLs! I never thought of that but it would definitely help with documentation.

•I use a notebook but spreadsheet sounds more organized. Might switch to that method.

Question about job search activities - if I attend a virtual job fair that lasts 3 hours, does that count as 1 activity or can I count each employer I talk to as separate activities?
0 coins
Declan Ramirez
•That would typically count as 1 job search activity for the job fair attendance. However, if you submit applications to specific employers you met there, each application could count as an additional activity.
0 coins
Alfredo Lugo
•That makes sense. So the fair itself is one activity, plus any follow-up applications are separate activities.

I'm getting different information from different sources about Washington ESD job search requirements. Some say 3, some say it depends on your situation. I tried calling to get clarification but gave up after being on hold for 2 hours. Has anyone actually gotten through to them recently?

•I had the same problem until someone here mentioned Claimyr. Used their service last week and got connected to an ESD agent in under 10 minutes. Worth checking out their demo video to see how it works.

Been unemployed for 3 months and doing way more than 3 job searches per week because I'm desperate to find work. At least I know I'm covered on the requirement! Sometimes I apply to 10-15 jobs in a week.

•That's great that you're being so proactive! Hopefully something comes through soon.

•Same here - doing way more than required because I want to get back to work ASAP. The requirement seems pretty reasonable honestly.

For those asking about documentation, I keep a simple log: Date | Company Name | Position Title | How Applied | Contact Info | Follow-up. Takes 2 minutes per entry and covers everything ESD might ask for.

•Perfect format! Mind if I copy this for my own tracking?

do job search workshops count toward the 3 weekly requirements? there's a resume writing workshop at my local workforce center next week

Zadie Patel
•Yes, career workshops and training activities count as valid job search activities. The resume workshop would definitely qualify.

•awesome thanks! that plus 2 applications should cover my week

I've been tracking everything in a notebook but worried it's not professional enough if ESD asks for proof. Should I transfer everything to a digital format?
0 coins
Declan Ramirez
•A well-organized notebook is perfectly acceptable. As long as you have clear dates, employer names, and activity details, the format doesn't matter. Digital is just easier to search through later.

Nolan Carter
•Thanks! I'll stick with my notebook then since I have everything organized chronologically.

Just want to add that I've found networking events through professional associations count as job search activities. LinkedIn networking messages to people in your field also count if you're seeking informational interviews or job leads.

Ali Anderson
•That's really helpful! I belong to a professional association but hadn't thought about their networking events counting.

Been following this thread and realized I need to step up my job search game. Currently just hitting Indeed and calling it good, but sounds like I should diversify my approach with networking and other activities.

•Diversifying definitely helps both with meeting requirements and actually finding opportunities. Job boards are just one piece of the puzzle.

One more thing - if you're having trouble reaching ESD about job search requirements or any other issues, that Claimyr service mentioned earlier really does work. I was skeptical at first but it saved me hours of trying to get through on the phone.

For anyone still reading, remember that job search requirements can vary based on your specific situation (like if you're on standby or have other arrangements). When in doubt, it's worth getting clarification from ESD directly rather than guessing.

Ali Anderson
•Good point about standby status. I'm in regular unemployment so the 3 activities per week applies to me.

•Yeah, there are definitely special circumstances that can affect requirements. Always better to verify your specific situation.
