Do you have to look for a job while on unemployment in Washington ESD?
I just started getting unemployment benefits and I'm confused about the job search requirements. Do I actually have to be looking for work every week to keep getting my benefits? I heard different things from different people. Some say you have to apply to 3 jobs per week, others say it's more. What exactly does Washington ESD require for job searching?

Yes, you absolutely have to be actively looking for work. Washington ESD requires you to make at least 3 job search activities per week and you need to keep records of everything. This includes applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, etc. You report this when you file your weekly claim.

•What counts as a job search activity? Does browsing job sites count or do you actually have to apply?

Sofia Perez
•Just browsing doesn't count. You need to actually apply for jobs, contact employers directly, attend interviews, go to job fairs, do informational interviews, or participate in reemployment services. Keep detailed records with dates, company names, and what you did.

The 3 job search activities per week is the minimum. But here's what's frustrating - trying to reach Washington ESD to clarify what qualifies can be impossible. I spent hours on hold last month just to verify if online applications count the same as in-person applications.

•I had the same problem! Couldn't get through to anyone at Washington ESD for weeks.

•Actually found something that helped - there's a service called Claimyr that gets you through to Washington ESD agents without the wait. Check out claimyr.com, they even have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Helped me get answers about job search requirements pretty quickly.

•Never heard of that but might be worth trying. I've been hanging up after 2+ hours on hold multiple times.

There are some exceptions to the job search requirement. If you're on standby status through your employer, you might not need to do job searches. Also if you're in certain training programs approved by Washington ESD. But for regular UI benefits, yes you need to search.

•How do you know if you qualify for standby status? My employer said they might call me back but nothing definite.

•Standby has to be arranged through your employer before you file for unemployment. If you're not sure, assume you need to do job searches to avoid any issues with your claim.

wait so if i dont look for jobs they can take away my benefits?? nobody told me this when i applied

•Yes, if Washington ESD audits your claim and finds you haven't been doing required job searches, they can disqualify you and even create an overpayment that you'd have to pay back.

•omg this is stressing me out. how often do they check this stuff?

•It's random but they do audit claims. Better to just do the job searches from the start than risk it.

I got selected for a job search audit last year and had to submit all my records. Thank god I kept everything documented. They wanted employer names, dates, job titles, how I applied, everything. It was nerve wracking but I passed.

Dylan Cooper
•How long did the audit take? Did it affect your payments while they reviewed?

ElectricDreamer
•About 3 weeks total. My payments continued while they reviewed my documentation, but I know some people get their benefits stopped during the audit process.

The whole system is so confusing. I wish Washington ESD would just send clear instructions instead of making us figure it out ourselves. Half the time their website doesn't even load properly when I try to look up the requirements.

•Same here! Their website is terrible and trying to call is pointless.

•That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr. Way easier than dealing with their broken phone system.

For anyone keeping track, here's what Washington ESD accepts as job search activities: 1) Job applications 2) Direct contact with employers 3) Job interviews 4) Career fairs 5) Networking events 6) Labor market research 7) Reemployment services. You need a combination totaling at least 3 per week.

•This is super helpful! Do you have to use WorkSourceWA or can you use other job sites?
0 coins
Sofia Perez
•You can use any legitimate job search method. Indeed, LinkedIn, company websites, WorkSourceWA - they all count as long as you're actually applying for suitable work.

•What counts as 'suitable work' though? Do I have to apply for any job or can I stick to my field?
0 coins
Sofia Perez
•Generally suitable work means jobs that match your skills, experience, and pay within a reasonable range of your previous job. But the longer you're unemployed, the broader the definition becomes.

Been on unemployment for 4 months now and doing my 3 job searches religiously every week. Still haven't been audited but I keep detailed spreadsheets just in case. Better safe than sorry with Washington ESD.

•What kind of details do you track in your spreadsheet?

PixelPioneer
•Date, company name, job title, how I found the job, method of application, contact person if any, and follow-up actions. Basically everything that proves I actually did the search activity.

I got disqualified once for not doing enough job searches. Had to appeal and it was a nightmare. The hearing officer was tough and wanted proof of everything. Luckily I had some documentation and got reinstated but lost 6 weeks of benefits during the process.

Dylan Cooper
•Oh no! How did they find out you weren't doing enough searches?

Keisha Williams
•Random audit. They asked for my job search log and I only had like 1-2 activities per week instead of 3. Don't make my mistake - do the full requirements from day one.

•Did you get back pay for those 6 weeks after you won the appeal?

Keisha Williams
•Eventually yes, but it took another month after the hearing to actually get the money. The whole thing was super stressful.

This is all making me paranoid. I've been doing job searches but not keeping great records. Should I start over with better documentation?

Sofia Perez
•Definitely start keeping better records now. Even if you haven't been perfect before, having good documentation going forward will help if you ever get audited.

•Thanks. Going to set up a spreadsheet tonight and start tracking everything properly.

Does anyone know if volunteer work counts toward job search activities? I've been volunteering at a nonprofit thinking it might count as networking.

Sofia Perez
•Volunteer work itself doesn't count as a job search activity, but networking contacts you make while volunteering could count if they lead to actual job opportunities or referrals.

Amina Sy
•Good to know. I'll make sure to focus on the networking aspect and document any job leads that come from it.

The job search requirement is honestly the most stressful part of being on unemployment. Not only are you worried about money, but you have to constantly prove you're looking for work even when the job market is tough.

•I feel this so much. Sometimes it feels like busy work when there just aren't that many openings in my field.

Sofia Perez
•I understand the frustration, but the requirement exists to encourage active job searching and ensure benefits go to people who are genuinely trying to find work.

Quick question - if I have a job interview, does that count as one job search activity or can I count the application and interview separately?
0 coins
Sofia Perez
•You can count them separately! The initial application is one activity, and attending the interview is another. Both are legitimate job search activities.

•Awesome, that's really helpful to know. Thanks!

I tried using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and it actually worked! Got through to a Washington ESD agent in about 10 minutes instead of waiting hours. They clarified some questions I had about what counts for job search activities.

Dylan Cooper
•Really? What did they tell you about the job search requirements?

NebulaNomad
•Basically confirmed what others have said here - 3 activities minimum per week, keep detailed records, and online applications count the same as in-person ones. The agent was actually pretty helpful once I got through.

Been tracking my job searches for 8 weeks now and haven't heard anything from Washington ESD about an audit. Is that normal or should I be expecting something?
0 coins
Sofia Perez
•Most people never get audited. It's random and they don't audit everyone. Just keep doing your job searches and maintaining records in case you're selected.

Javier Garcia
•That's reassuring. I'll keep doing what I'm doing then.

For people worried about job search requirements - the key is consistency. Do your 3 activities every week, document everything, and you'll be fine. I've been doing this for months without any issues.

One more tip - if you're struggling to find 3 legitimate job opportunities to apply for each week, consider expanding your search radius or looking at related job titles in your field. Better to apply for something slightly outside your preference than risk non-compliance.

•That's smart advice. I've been too picky about location and probably limiting myself unnecessarily.

•Exactly. You can always turn down a job offer if it's not right, but you need to show you're actively searching to keep your benefits.
