How many job searches are required for unemployment benefits in Washington ESD?
I'm filing my weekly claims and I see there's a job search requirement but I can't find clear info on exactly how many job searches Washington ESD requires per week. Some places say 3, others say it depends on your situation. I'm on regular UI benefits and able to work full time. Does anyone know the exact number I need to log in my job search activities? I don't want to mess up my claim over this.

For regular unemployment benefits in Washington, you need to complete at least 3 job search activities per week. This has to be documented in your WorkSourceWA account and you'll need to keep records of your search activities in case Washington ESD audits your claim.

•Thanks! Do I need to apply to 3 jobs or can some of the activities be other things like attending job fairs?

•Good question - the 3 activities can include job applications, networking events, job fairs, interviews, or career workshops. Not all have to be applications, but at least one should be an actual job application if possible.

i think its more than 3 now? my friend said she had to do 5 activities last month

•The standard requirement is still 3 job search activities per week for most claimants. Your friend might have been given additional requirements if she was in a special program or had been collecting benefits for an extended period.

•oh that makes sense, she was on benefits for like 8 months already

I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks to clarify this exact question and can never get through! The phone system is impossible. Has anyone actually spoken to a real person there recently?

•I had the same problem until I found Claimyr.com - they have a service that gets you connected to Washington ESD agents. I watched their demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ and decided to try it. Got through to an actual person within 20 minutes instead of calling for hours.

The job search requirement varies depending on your situation. If you're on standby status, you don't need to do job searches. If you're partially employed, you still need the 3 activities. Make sure you're logging everything in WorkSourceWA because they do random audits.

•I'm not on standby, just regular UI. Good to know about the audits though - I'll make sure to keep detailed records.

•What happens if they audit and you don't have enough job search activities documented?

•They can disqualify you for benefits and potentially create an overpayment that you'd have to pay back. It's not worth the risk - always do the required searches.

Wait I'm confused - do the job searches have to be for jobs I'm actually qualified for? Because there aren't many openings in my field right now and I'm worried about applying to things I'm overqualified for.

•Yes, your job search activities should be for suitable work. That generally means work that matches your skills, experience, and the wage you were earning before. You don't have to take jobs that pay significantly less than your previous wage, especially early in your claim.

•That's a relief. I was worried I'd have to apply for minimum wage jobs when I was making $30/hour before.

Been on UI for 2 months now and I religiously do my 3 job search activities every week. The key is variety - I usually do 2 online applications and 1 networking activity or job fair. Haven't had any issues with Washington ESD questioning my search activities.

•That's smart to mix it up. I've been doing all online applications and wondering if I should diversify.

•Definitely diversify! Networking events and professional association meetings count too, and they're often more valuable than just submitting applications into the void.

PSA: Don't forget that you need to register with WorkSourceWA if you haven't already. You can't properly document your job search activities without being registered there, and Washington ESD will eventually require proof of your registration.

•I registered but haven't really used it much. Should I be actively using their job search tools?

•Yes, using their tools and logging your activities there creates a good paper trail. Plus they have some decent job matching features.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS RIDICULOUS! 3 job searches per week when there are barely any decent jobs posted. It's just busywork to make us jump through hoops while we're already stressed about being unemployed.

•I get the frustration but the requirement isn't going away. Better to just comply and focus energy on finding actual work.

•Easy for you to say. Some of us are in specialized fields where there literally aren't 3 relevant job postings per week.

Yara Elias
•For specialized fields, you can count activities like updating your LinkedIn profile, reaching out to recruiters, or attending industry webinars. The activities don't all have to be direct applications.

Quick tip: Keep screenshots of your job applications and save the job postings. I learned this the hard way when a company took down a posting and I couldn't prove I had applied when Washington ESD asked for documentation.

•Great advice! I hadn't thought about saving the actual job postings. How long should I keep these records?

Isabella Oliveira
•I'd keep them for at least a year after your claim ends, just to be safe. Washington ESD can audit claims pretty far back.

Does anyone know if volunteer work counts toward the job search requirement? I've been volunteering at a nonprofit and wondering if that networking counts as a job search activity.

Zainab Abdulrahman
•Volunteer work itself doesn't count as a job search activity, but networking you do while volunteering could count if it's specifically related to finding employment. The activity needs to be directly aimed at job searching.

•Makes sense. I have made some professional connections through volunteering that might lead to job opportunities.

I use Claimyr whenever I need to talk to Washington ESD about my job search requirements or any other claim issues. Way easier than trying to get through their phone system on my own. Has saved me hours of frustration.

•How much does something like that cost? Seems like it might be expensive.

•It's worth checking out their website at claimyr.com to see what works for your situation. For me, the time saved was definitely worth it when I had urgent questions about my claim.

Been unemployed for 6 months and the job search requirement has actually helped me stay organized and motivated. I use a spreadsheet to track all my activities and it's useful for interviews when they ask what I've been doing to find work.

•That's a great attitude! Mind sharing what columns you include in your spreadsheet?

Omar Zaki
•Sure! I track date, company name, position, how I applied, contact person if applicable, follow-up date, and outcome. Helps me stay on top of everything.

Just want to confirm - if I have a part-time job but still filing for partial unemployment, I still need to do the 3 job search activities per week, right?
0 coins
Yara Elias
•Correct, if you're filing for partial unemployment benefits, you still need to meet the job search requirements unless you're on approved standby status with your employer.

Diego Flores
•Thanks for confirming. The partial unemployment rules are confusing but I want to make sure I'm complying with everything.

Another Claimyr success story here - used them when I got confused about whether my temp agency assignments counted toward job search activities. Got a clear answer from Washington ESD within 30 minutes instead of playing phone tag for weeks.

Miguel Castro
•What did they tell you about temp assignments? I'm in a similar situation.
0 coins
Anastasia Ivanova
•They said registering with temp agencies counts as one job search activity, but each individual assignment doesn't count separately. You still need to do additional search activities beyond just temp work.

The 3 job search activities per week is the minimum, but honestly doing more is better for actually finding work. I usually do 5-6 activities per week because I want to get off unemployment as soon as possible.

•Same here. I figure the more effort I put in, the faster I'll find something. Plus it gives me a buffer in case one week I can't find 3 good opportunities.

Sean Murphy
•Exactly! And it shows you're serious about finding work if Washington ESD ever questions your claim.
