How many work search activities required for Washington ESD unemployment weekly claims?

I just started collecting unemployment and I'm confused about the job search requirements. My cousin in another state only has to do 2 activities per week but I heard Washington might be different. How many work search activities do I need to complete each week for my Washington ESD claim? And what exactly counts as a valid activity? I don't want to mess up my benefits by not doing enough.

For Washington ESD, you need to complete 3 work search activities per week. This changed from the old 2-activity requirement a few years back. Make sure you're logging them in your WorkSource account and keeping records.

Thanks! Do I need to do this starting with my first weekly claim or is there a waiting period?

You start immediately with your first payable week. No grace period unfortunately.

wait i thought it was still 2?? ive been only doing 2 activities and haven't had any issues with my claims

It's definitely 3 now. You might have gotten lucky or they haven't audited your claim yet. I'd start doing 3 to be safe.

oh crap... guess i better start doing more then. thanks for the heads up

I've had such a hard time getting through to Washington ESD to clarify this exact question. Spent hours on hold trying to reach someone who could give me a straight answer about the work search requirements. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to an agent in under 30 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Game changer for getting through their phone system.

Interesting, never heard of that before. Did they charge you for it?

0 coins

Yeah there's a fee but honestly worth it when you're dealing with urgent claim issues and can't get through normally.

I might have to try this. Been trying to reach them for weeks about my adjudication.

The 3 activities must be different types to count. You can't just apply to 3 jobs and call it good. Mix it up with applications, networking events, skills assessments, job fairs, etc. Washington ESD is pretty strict about variety in your search activities.

What if I can't find 3 different types of activities in my small town? We don't have many job fairs or networking events here.

Online activities count too! LinkedIn networking, online skills courses, virtual job fairs, industry webinars - lots of options beyond in-person stuff.

THIS IS RIDICULOUS! 3 activities a week when there are barely any jobs in my field right now. Washington ESD expects us to waste time on busy work instead of focusing on quality applications. The whole system is designed to make us jump through hoops.

I feel your frustration but the requirements are what they are. Better to comply than risk losing benefits.

0 coins

Yeah I know, just venting. It's exhausting having to document everything constantly.

Make sure you're keeping detailed records of each activity. Date, employer/organization, type of activity, contact person if applicable. Washington ESD can audit your work search at any time and if you can't prove you did the activities, they'll disqualify you and make you pay back benefits.

How far back do they typically audit? Just wondering how long I need to keep these records.

Keep everything for at least a year after your claim ends. Better safe than sorry with overpayment notices.

Does anyone know if volunteering counts as a work search activity? I've been volunteering at a nonprofit and wondering if that helps with the requirement.

Volunteering itself doesn't count, but networking you do while volunteering can count as an activity if you're making job-related contacts.

Got it, thanks for clarifying that distinction.

I use the WorkSource website to track everything. It syncs with your Washington ESD account automatically so there's no confusion about what you've reported. Plus they have a job search calendar feature that helps you plan out your weekly activities.

Is WorkSource required or just recommended? I've been tracking everything in my own spreadsheet.

0 coins

Not required but highly recommended. Makes everything easier when you file your weekly claims.

Quick question - if I have a job interview, does that count as one of my 3 activities for that week?

0 coins

Zainab Yusuf

•

Yes, interviews definitely count! Make sure to document the company, date, and position you interviewed for.

Perfect, that makes this week easier then. Thanks!

Been unemployed for 6 months now and honestly the work search requirements keep me motivated. Without them I'd probably get lazy about actively looking. The 3 activities force me to stay engaged in the job market even when I'm feeling discouraged.

That's a good way to look at it. I've been grumbling about the requirements but you're right, they do keep you focused.

Exactly! And honestly some of the networking activities have led to better opportunities than I would have found just applying online.

What happens if you forget to do your work search activities one week? Do they automatically disqualify you or give you a chance to explain?

They usually send a warning letter first asking you to explain the gap. If you can show good cause (illness, family emergency, etc.) they might excuse it. But repeated failures will result in disqualification.

Good to know there's some flexibility for legitimate reasons. Thanks for the info.

Pro tip: Set up Google alerts for jobs in your field. When you check and review those alerts, that counts as a work search activity. Easy way to get one of your three done each week.

0 coins

Clever! Never thought of that. Do you document it as 'online job search' or something more specific?

I log it as 'reviewed job postings via Google alerts' with the date and number of listings reviewed.

Has anyone used that Claimyr thing mentioned earlier? I'm curious if it actually works or if it's just another scam targeting desperate unemployed people.

0 coins

I used it last month when I couldn't get through about my pending adjudication. It's legit - they actually got me connected to a real Washington ESD agent who resolved my issue. Worth checking out their video demo to see how it works.

Thanks for the honest review. Might give it a shot since I've been trying to reach them for weeks.

Remember that seasonal work patterns can affect your work search requirements. If you're in an industry with defined seasons (like landscaping or tourism), Washington ESD may have different expectations during off-seasons.

Does this apply to teachers too? I'm on summer break but collecting unemployment.

0 coins

Teachers have special rules - you might not need to do work search during reasonable assurance periods. Check with Washington ESD about your specific situation.

0 coins

The key thing everyone should remember is that Washington ESD can and will audit your work search activities. I know someone who got hit with a $4,000 overpayment because they couldn't prove they did their required activities for several weeks. Document everything!

Sean Flanagan

•

That's terrifying! How did they find out that person wasn't doing the activities?

0 coins

Random audit. They requested documentation for a 3-month period and my friend couldn't provide adequate proof for multiple weeks.

This thread has been so helpful. Definitely going to be extra careful about documenting everything from now on.
