How to fill out work search for unemployment Washington ESD - confused about requirements

I'm struggling with understanding exactly how to complete the work search requirements for my Washington ESD weekly claims. I know I need to do 3 job search activities per week but I'm not sure what counts and how detailed I need to be when logging them. Do I need to include contact names for every application? What about online applications where there's no specific person listed? Also, does networking count as a valid work search activity? I don't want to mess this up and lose my benefits.

You need to document each work search activity with employer name, contact method, date, and type of contact. For online applications, just put 'online application' for contact method. Yes, networking events count as long as they're job-related. Keep detailed records because Washington ESD can audit your work search log at any time.

Thanks! Do I need to keep physical copies of applications or is the online log enough?

Sean Kelly

•

Keep screenshots or confirmations of online applications. Washington ESD may request proof during an audit.

I was so confused about this too when I first started filing. The work search activities that count include job applications, contacting employers directly, attending job fairs, networking events, and even some training activities. Make sure you're logging them in your WorkSourceWA account.

0 coins

I didn't know about WorkSourceWA - is that separate from my regular Washington ESD account?

0 coins

Zara Mirza

•

Yes it's different. You need to register on WorkSourceWA and use it to track your job search activities. It's required.

Been dealing with work search requirements for months now. Here's what I've learned works: Be specific with job titles and company names, always include the date and method of contact. For online apps, I usually put the job board name (Indeed, LinkedIn, etc.). Professional associations and career workshops count too.

What if I apply to the same company multiple times for different positions?

Luca Russo

•

Each application for a different position counts as a separate work search activity. Just make sure to note the specific job title for each one.

Honestly the whole work search thing stressed me out so much until I found Claimyr. They helped me get through to an actual Washington ESD representative who explained exactly what I needed to do. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how they help you reach agents without waiting on hold forever.

Never heard of this service. Does it actually work for getting through to Washington ESD?

Nia Harris

It worked for me. I was able to talk to someone within a few hours instead of calling for days and never getting through.

ugh this is so frustrating!! why do they make it so complicated?? I just want to file my weekly claim without jumping through hoops

Sean Kelly

•

I know it's annoying but the work search requirement is federal law. Washington ESD has to enforce it or they lose federal funding.

still stupid if you ask me

For those just starting out, here's a simple format that works: Date - Company Name - Position Title - Contact Method (online app, phone call, email, in person) - Contact Person (if applicable). Keep it consistent and you'll be fine.

This is super helpful, thanks for breaking it down like this.

Should I include the job posting URL or reference number?

0 coins

Luca Russo

•

Not required but can't hurt to include reference numbers. Just don't overcomplicate it.

Wait do informational interviews count as work search activities? I've been doing a lot of those but wasn't sure if I should log them.

0 coins

Sean Kelly

•

Yes, informational interviews count as long as they're with potential employers or people in your field who could refer you to opportunities.

Ethan Moore

•

Good to know! I've been missing out on counting those.

The work search requirement is 3 activities per week minimum but you can do more. I usually aim for 4-5 just to be safe in case one doesn't meet their criteria for some reason.

0 coins

That's smart. Better to do extra than risk having a claim denied.

0 coins

I do the same thing. Sometimes employers don't respond so having extras helps prove you're actively looking.

Pro tip: Set up job alerts on multiple sites. When you apply through those alerts, it shows you're being proactive about your search. Washington ESD likes to see variety in your search methods.

0 coins

Good idea! I've only been using one job board.

Carmen Vega

•

Yeah diversify your search. Use Indeed, LinkedIn, company websites, WorkSourceWA job board, etc.

Does attending virtual job fairs count? Everything is online now and I'm not sure if they count the same as in-person events.

Sean Kelly

•

Virtual job fairs definitely count. Just document which companies you spoke with and what positions you discussed.

0 coins

Perfect, I have two virtual fairs coming up this week.

I got audited last month and they wanted to see everything - emails, application confirmations, notes from phone calls. Keep records of EVERYTHING related to your job search.

0 coins

How did the audit go? Were you prepared enough?

0 coins

Zara Mirza

•

It went fine because I kept detailed records. They approved everything but it was stressful. Organization is key.

One thing that helped me was creating a simple spreadsheet to track everything. Date, company, position, how I applied, follow-up actions. Makes it easy to transfer to the WorkSourceWA system.

0 coins

That sounds like a good system. Do you update it daily?

0 coins

Andre Moreau

•

I update it right after each job search activity. Don't wait or you'll forget details.

Update on Claimyr - I used them again this week to get clarification on work search requirements directly from Washington ESD. The agent confirmed that career counseling sessions count as work search activities too. Definitely worth using if you need quick answers.

How much does that service cost?

Nia Harris

•

They focus on getting you connected rather than charging high fees. The value is in actually reaching someone at Washington ESD when you need answers.

HELP! I think I messed up my work search log for last week. Can I go back and fix it or am I screwed?

0 coins

Sean Kelly

•

You can usually edit your work search activities in WorkSourceWA as long as you haven't submitted your weekly claim yet. Check your account.

Jamal Harris

•

Already submitted my claim 😭 What happens now?

Sean Kelly

•

Contact Washington ESD as soon as possible to explain the situation. They may allow corrections if it was an honest mistake.

•

Anyone know if following up on previous applications counts as a separate work search activity?

0 coins

Luca Russo

•

Yes, follow-up calls or emails count as separate activities from the original application. Just document the follow-up contact separately.

0 coins

Mei Chen

•

Awesome, I've been doing lots of follow-ups but wasn't counting them.

0 coins

Liam Sullivan

•

The whole system is so confusing. I wish Washington ESD would just make the requirements clearer instead of making us guess what counts and what doesn't.

0 coins

Amara Okafor

•

Agreed! The guidelines are vague and every agent seems to give different answers.

0 coins

Sean Kelly

•

That's why documenting everything is so important. When in doubt, include it and let them decide.

0 coins

temp agencies count too right? I registered with three staffing agencies this week

0 coins

Luca Russo

•

Yes, registering with employment agencies counts. Each registration is a separate work search activity.

0 coins

great! that gives me my three for this week then

I've been using Claimyr to get through to Washington ESD agents whenever I have questions about work search requirements. It's been super helpful for getting real-time clarification instead of guessing. Their system at claimyr.com really does work for connecting you to actual people.

0 coins

I might try this. I have so many questions and calling on my own has been impossible.

0 coins

Definitely worth it. I got answers in hours instead of days of trying to call myself.

0 coins

Just want to add that LinkedIn networking messages count as work search activities if they're about job opportunities. I've been connecting with recruiters and hiring managers in my field.

0 coins

That's good to know! I use LinkedIn a lot but wasn't sure if it counted.

0 coins

Yeah just make sure you're documenting who you contacted and about what positions. Keep it job-focused.

Thanks everyone for all the helpful info! I feel much more confident about filling out my work search activities now. This thread has been super useful.

Glad we could help! Remember to stay consistent with your documentation and you'll be fine.

Same here, I was so worried about messing this up but now I know what to do.

I've been dealing with this same confusion! One thing that really helped me was setting up a dedicated folder on my phone to screenshot every online application confirmation page right after I submit. I also keep a simple notes app entry for each activity with the basic details - makes it so much easier to transfer everything to WorkSourceWA later. The key is being consistent and not overthinking it. As long as you're genuinely looking for work and documenting your efforts, you should be fine. The 3 activities per week is really manageable once you get into a routine.
