Washington ESD - how many weeks does it take to get unemployment approved?
Just filed my initial claim last week after getting laid off from my warehouse job. The online system says my claim is processing but doesn't give any timeline. I'm starting to panic about bills piling up. How many weeks does it typically take Washington ESD to approve a new unemployment claim? My friend said hers took forever but she filed during COVID so maybe things are different now. I haven't worked anywhere else in the past 18 months so I don't think there should be any complications with my work history.

Usually takes 2-3 weeks for a straightforward claim to get approved if there are no issues. Since you only had one employer in your base period, that should help speed things up. Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while it's processing or you'll lose those weeks.

•Thanks! I've been doing the weekly claims online. Should I be worried that it's been a week with no updates?

•One week is nothing to worry about. The system updates pretty slowly and they're probably just verifying your wages with your employer.

Mine took exactly 18 days from filing to first payment hitting my account. But that was back in March and I had a clean work history like yours sounds like.

•That's reassuring! Did you get any notifications when it was approved or did the money just show up?

•I got an email saying my claim was approved, then the payment showed up about 3 days later.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I discovered this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually gets you connected to a real person. They have this demo video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ - basically they handle all the calling and waiting for you. Saved me hours of frustration when I needed to ask about my adjudication.

•Is this legit? I've been trying to call Washington ESD for days and can never get through.

•Yeah it's real. I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Way better than spending my whole day redialing the same number.

•Good to know this exists if I need it. Hopefully my claim goes through without needing to call.

WEEKS?? This is insane. I've been waiting 5 weeks and still nothing. Washington ESD is completely broken. They're sitting on thousands of claims while people can't pay rent.

•5 weeks usually means there's an issue with your claim that needs adjudication. Did you check if there are any pending issues in your account?

•It just says 'under review' with no details. I've tried calling but the phone system hangs up on me every time.

•That's exactly the situation where Claimyr helps. They can get you through to find out what the holdup is.

Update: it's been 10 days now and still showing 'processing' on my account. Starting to get worried.

•10 days is still normal range. I'd give it another week before worrying.

For anyone reading this thread, here's what affects processing time: 1) Multiple employers in base period adds time, 2) Any separation issues (fired vs laid off) triggers adjudication, 3) Out of state work history requires verification, 4) Wage discrepancies need resolution. Clean cases with single employer and clear layoff typically process in 14-21 days.

•This is super helpful. None of those apply to me so hopefully I'm in the 2-3 week range.

•What about if you were a contractor before getting laid off from regular employment? Does that complicate things?
0 coins
Jasmine Hancock
•Yes, contractor work can complicate it because they need to verify you weren't actually an employee for UI purposes.

I'm on week 4 of waiting and getting desperate. Bills are piling up and I can't get anyone at Washington ESD on the phone. This system is cruel.

•Seriously try Claimyr if you need to talk to someone. It's worth it when you're stressed about money.

•Have you checked if there are any local WorkSource offices that can help? Sometimes they can see more details about what's holding up your claim.

•I'll try both suggestions. At this point I need to try everything.

Just wanted to share my timeline for reference: Filed on a Tuesday, claim approved the following Thursday (9 days), first payment deposited the next Tuesday (15 days total from filing to money in account). No complications, laid off from retail job after 2 years.

•That gives me hope! Similar situation to mine.

•Wow that's fast! Mine took 3 weeks but I had worked in Oregon before moving to Washington so they had to verify my wages.

does anyone know if filing on certain days of the week makes a difference? heard fridays are bad

•Day of the week doesn't matter for processing time. That's just a myth.

•I filed on a Friday and got approved in normal time, so probably not true.

The 2-3 week thing is accurate for most people. I work in HR and deal with unemployment claims regularly. Washington ESD has actually gotten more efficient since COVID ended and they're not dealing with all the federal programs anymore.

•That's good to hear from someone who sees this from the employer side.

•Do employers usually respond quickly when Washington ESD contacts them for verification?

Seraphina Delan
•Most employers respond within a few days. It's in their interest to respond quickly so their UI tax rates don't get affected.

Week 6 here and still waiting. This is absolutely ridiculous. How are people supposed to survive while Washington ESD takes their sweet time?

Jasmine Hancock
•6 weeks definitely indicates an adjudication issue. Have you looked at your correspondence section to see if they sent you any requests for information?

Kristin Frank
•Nothing in correspondence. Just says under review with no details whatsoever.

•This is exactly why services like Claimyr exist. When you can't get answers through normal channels, you need help getting through to them.

For what it's worth, I just got approved after exactly 16 days. Standard layoff situation, one employer for the past year. The waiting is awful but it does eventually happen.

•Did you get the full back pay for all the weeks you filed while waiting?

•Yes, got paid for all the weeks I had filed claims for. That was a relief.

My sister waited 8 weeks but she had quit her job before getting laid off from a different job, so they had to adjudicate the quit. Complicated situations definitely take longer.

•Yeah quit situations are always complicated. They have to determine if it was for good cause or not.

•Good thing I was clearly laid off then. No ambiguity in my case.

FINAL UPDATE: Got approved today! Exactly 17 days from when I filed. First payment should hit my account in a few days. Thanks everyone for the reassurance that 2-3 weeks was normal - you were right!
