How long till Washington ESD unemployment kicks in after filing?

Just filed my initial claim with Washington ESD yesterday and I'm wondering how long till unemployment kicks in? I got laid off from my warehouse job last week and bills are already piling up. The website says my claim is being processed but doesn't give any timeline. Anyone know how long this usually takes? I need to know when I can expect my first payment so I can plan accordingly.

Usually takes about 2-3 weeks from when you file until you get your first payment, assuming there are no issues with your claim. You still need to file your weekly claims during this time even if you haven't been paid yet.

Thanks! So I should keep filing weekly claims even before getting approved?

0 coins

Yes definitely, you need to file every week or you'll lose those weeks permanently. The weekly claims are separate from your initial application.

It depends on if your claim goes into adjudication or not. If Washington ESD needs to verify your employment history or reason for separation, it can take 4-6 weeks or even longer. Check your account regularly for any pending issues.

How do I know if it's in adjudication? My account just says 'claim processed' right now.

0 coins

If it goes to adjudication, you'll see a notice in your account or get a letter in the mail. Usually happens when there's a question about why you left your job.

Mine went to adjudication and took 5 weeks. Was a nightmare trying to get through to anyone at Washington ESD to check on it.

I had a similar situation last year. If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone to check your claim status, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you actually reach an agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Really helped when I was stuck waiting weeks without knowing what was happening with my claim.

Is that legit? How much does it cost?

0 coins

It's legitimate, helps you get through the phone system. I'd rather not discuss pricing here but it was worth it for me when I couldn't get answers any other way.

I've heard of Claimyr too. My sister used it when her claim was stuck in adjudication for weeks. She said it actually worked.

0 coins

OMG this is exactly what I'm going through right now! Filed 10 days ago and still nothing. The waiting is killing me, I have rent due next week and don't know what to do if the payment doesn't come through soon.

0 coins

Hang in there. If your claim is approved, you'll get backpay for all the weeks you filed. Just make sure you keep filing your weekly claims.

0 coins

Thanks, I'm trying to stay positive but it's really stressful not knowing when money will come in.

The whole Washington ESD system is so slow and frustrating. I've been through this process twice and both times it took forever. First time was 3 weeks, second time was almost 6 weeks because they had questions about my job separation. Make sure you have all your employment documentation ready in case they ask for it.

0 coins

What kind of documentation should I have ready?

0 coins

Pay stubs, termination letter if you have one, any correspondence with your employer about the layoff. Basically anything that proves when and why you stopped working.

0 coins

Also keep records of your job search activities from day one. Washington ESD requires proof you're looking for work.

Just went through this whole process myself. Filed in early December and didn't get my first payment until after New Year's. The trick is to be patient but also stay on top of it. Check your account every day for updates.

0 coins

Did you have to call them at all or did it just eventually go through?

0 coins

I tried calling for weeks but could never get through. Finally used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and got connected to an agent who told me my claim was approved but there was a payment processing delay.

0 coins

For what it's worth, I got my first payment exactly 14 days after filing my initial claim. No issues, no adjudication, just straightforward layoff situation. So it can happen pretty quickly if everything goes smoothly.

0 coins

That's encouraging! Were you laid off or did you quit?

0 coins

Laid off due to company downsizing. Had all the proper documentation from HR which probably helped speed things up.

The waiting period is brutal but don't panic yet. Washington ESD has to verify your wages with your employer and that can take time. As long as you're filing your weekly claims and there are no red flags, you should be fine.

0 coins

How do you know if there are red flags? I'm paranoid something is wrong with my claim.

0 coins

You'll get a notice or letter if there are any issues. If you haven't heard anything negative, that's usually a good sign.

0 coins

been there done that, took 3 weeks for mine to kick in last year. just keep filing weekly and be patient, the money will come eventually

0 coins

Thanks, trying to stay patient but it's hard when bills are due!

One thing to keep in mind - even if your claim is approved quickly, there's often a delay between approval and when the money actually hits your bank account or debit card. That can be another 2-3 business days on top of everything else.

0 coins

Good point, I didn't think about the payment processing time.

0 coins

Yeah, and if you're getting a debit card instead of direct deposit, that can add even more time for the card to arrive in the mail.

0 coins

I'm in week 4 of waiting and still nothing. My claim shows approved but no payments yet. Starting to wonder if I should try calling again or use one of those services to get through.

0 coins

If your claim shows approved but no payments, definitely try to reach someone. That Claimyr service I mentioned earlier really does work for getting through to an actual person at Washington ESD.

0 coins

Thanks, I might have to try that. The regular phone system is impossible.

0 coins

Just remember to keep filing your weekly claims no matter what. I made the mistake of thinking I didn't need to file one week because I hadn't been paid yet, and I lost that week forever. Washington ESD doesn't let you go back and claim missed weeks.

0 coins

Wow good to know! I'll make sure to file every single week.

0 coins

Wait, so if you miss filing one week you just lose that money completely?

0 coins

Yep, that's exactly right. Each week has to be claimed during its specific time period or you forfeit it.

0 coins

The whole system is designed to make you give up. Took me 7 weeks to get my first payment because they kept asking for more documentation. Don't let them wear you down.

0 coins

7 weeks?! That's crazy. How did you survive financially?

0 coins

Had to borrow money from family and use credit cards. Not ideal but at least I got backpay for all those weeks eventually.

0 coins

mine kicked in after exactly 2 weeks, no problems at all. guess it depends on your situation

0 coins

Hope mine goes that smoothly!

0 coins

Just to summarize for the OP - typical timeline is 2-4 weeks if everything goes smoothly. Could be longer if your claim goes to adjudication. Keep filing weekly claims no matter what. And if you need to check on your claim status but can't get through by phone, there are services like Claimyr that can help you reach an actual person at Washington ESD.

0 coins

Thanks for the summary! This has been really helpful. I feel better knowing what to expect.

0 coins

Yeah this thread has been super informative. I'm about to file my own claim so this is all good to know.

0 coins

One more tip - set up direct deposit if you haven't already. It's faster than waiting for a debit card to arrive in the mail. You can do it through your Washington ESD account online.

0 coins

Good idea, I'll set that up right now. Thanks!

0 coins

The uncertainty is the worst part. I remember checking my account obsessively every day waiting for some kind of update. Just try to stay busy with job searching and don't drive yourself crazy refreshing the page.

0 coins

Easier said than done but I'll try! Thanks for all the advice everyone.

0 coins

Hope everything works out for you OP. The waiting period is stressful but most people do get their benefits eventually. Just stay on top of your weekly filings and job search requirements.

Thanks! Will do. This forum has been a lifesaver for getting real answers.
