How long for Washington ESD unemployment approval after filing claim?
Filed my unemployment claim with Washington ESD last Tuesday and I'm wondering how long it typically takes to get approved? My previous job ended due to company downsizing and I made sure to file within the first week. The website just says 'claim pending' but doesn't give any timeframe. I've got bills coming up and really need to know what to expect. Anyone know the usual processing time for regular UI claims?

Usually takes 2-3 weeks for a straightforward claim if there are no issues. Washington ESD has to verify your work history and wages with your previous employer. Since you mentioned company downsizing, that's pretty clear cut so shouldn't cause delays.

•That's a relief, thanks. Do they send notification when it's approved or do I just check online?

•You'll get both - email notification and mail letter. Keep checking your SecureAccess Washington account for updates too.

Mine took 4 weeks because they had to do some kind of verification process. Keep filing your weekly claims even while it's pending - that's important or you could lose those weeks.

•Good point about the weekly claims. I wasn't sure if I should file those before getting approved.

•Definitely file them! I made that mistake and lost 2 weeks of benefits because I waited.

If you're having trouble getting through to check on your claim status, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me reach a Washington ESD agent quickly. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call.

•Is that legit? I've been calling for days and can't get through to anyone.

•Yeah it's real. They basically call for you and get you connected to an actual person at Washington ESD. Way better than sitting on hold forever.

•Might have to try that if I don't hear anything soon. The phone lines are brutal.

The 2-3 week timeline is accurate for most people but watch out for adjudication. If Washington ESD needs to investigate anything about your separation from work, it can take 6-8 weeks or longer. Company downsizing should be straightforward though.

Philip Cowan
•What would trigger adjudication? I left on good terms and have all my paperwork.

•Things like if your employer contests the claim, if there are questions about misconduct, or if work availability is unclear. Downsizing layoffs rarely have issues.

ugh the waiting is the worst part!! i filed 3 weeks ago and still nothing, starting to panic about rent

•Have you tried calling to check your claim status? Sometimes there are issues that need to be resolved.

•tried calling like 50 times, always busy or they hang up on me after waiting forever

•This is exactly why I used Claimyr - the regular phone system is impossible. They got me through to someone in under 30 minutes.

Just wanted to add that even after you're approved, there's usually a one week waiting period before you get your first payment. So factor that in when planning your finances.

Philip Cowan
•Wait, so even after approval there's another delay? That's tough.

Gemma Andrews
•Yeah, it's a state requirement. The first week is unpaid, then you start getting weekly benefits after that.

Make sure you're doing your job search activities too. Washington ESD requires 3 job contacts per week and you have to log them in WorkSourceWA. Don't wait until you're approved to start.

Philip Cowan
•I've been applying to jobs but haven't logged anything yet. Do I need to do that right away?
0 coins
Dallas Villalobos
•Yes, start logging now. They can ask for your job search log at any time and you need to have those 3 contacts per week documented.

•The WorkSourceWA website can be confusing at first but it's required. Better to start early than scramble later.

Been through this twice in the past 5 years. First time took 3 weeks, second time took 6 weeks because of some computer glitch. There's really no predicting it unfortunately.

Philip Cowan
•Computer glitch? Did you have to do anything special to resolve it?

•Had to call and speak to someone to manually process it. That's when having a way to actually reach them becomes crucial.

Another thing - make sure your mailing address is correct in your account. They send important notices by mail and if you miss something it can delay everything.

•Good reminder. I moved recently so I should double check that.

•Yeah I had a friend who missed an important letter because of an old address and it messed up her whole claim.

THE SYSTEM IS SO SLOW! I swear they make it difficult on purpose. Three weeks just to approve a basic claim is ridiculous when people need money for food and rent.
0 coins
Caesar Grant
•I get the frustration but they do have to verify employment and wages with employers. That takes time unfortunately.

Demi Lagos
•Other states do it faster. Washington ESD just has outdated systems and not enough staff.

Beatrice Marshall
•The verification process is actually required by federal law, not just Washington state rules.

Pro tip: set up direct deposit if you haven't already. Checks take longer and can get lost in the mail. Electronic payments are much faster once you're approved.

Philip Cowan
•Good call. I think I set that up when I filed but I'll double check.

Gemma Andrews
•Direct deposit usually processes within 1-2 business days versus waiting a week for a check.

just checking in - any update on your claim status? mine finally got approved yesterday after 18 days

Philip Cowan
•Still pending unfortunately. It's been 8 days now. Starting to get worried.

•18 days is pretty normal from what i've seen. try not to stress too much, it'll come through

Since you're getting anxious about the timeline, you might want to call and check if there are any issues with your claim. Claimyr really is the easiest way to get through - saved me so much stress when I was waiting.

Philip Cowan
•How much does that cost? I'm already tight on money.

•It's worth checking their site for current info. When you're worried about your claim status, sometimes it's worth it for peace of mind.

•I actually tried them last week and got connected to Washington ESD in like 20 minutes. Way better than the endless busy signals.

Keep your chin up! I know the waiting is stressful but most claims do get approved eventually. The downsizing situation you described sounds very straightforward.

•Thanks for the encouragement. I know I qualify, just hate the uncertainty.

•Layoffs due to downsizing are usually the easiest cases for Washington ESD to process. You should be fine.

Don't forget you can also check for any local food banks or assistance programs while you're waiting. No shame in getting help during the gap.

Philip Cowan
•Good point. I've been too proud to look into that but maybe I should.

Similar situation here - laid off from manufacturing job 2 weeks ago. Filed right away and still waiting. At least we're not alone in this!

Philip Cowan
•Yeah there seem to be a lot of us going through this lately. Hopefully we both hear something soon.

•I'll update here when mine comes through. Good luck with yours!

One more thing - if your claim does get denied for any reason, don't panic. You have 30 days to appeal and most appeals that have merit do get overturned.
0 coins
Philip Cowan
•Hopefully it won't come to that but good to know there are options.
0 coins
Beatrice Marshall
•Appeals do take longer though - usually 6-12 weeks. Better to get it right the first time if possible.

The worst part is not knowing if there's a problem or if it's just normal processing time. Washington ESD really needs better communication.
0 coins
Melina Haruko
•exactly! at least tell us if there's an issue instead of just 'pending' forever
0 coins
Caesar Grant
•This is why calling to check status can be helpful, even though it's frustrating to get through.
0 coins
Pedro Sawyer
•And why services like Claimyr exist - to bridge that communication gap when you can't reach them directly.
