How soon do you get unemployment after filing Washington ESD claim?
Filed my unemployment claim with Washington ESD last Friday and I'm wondering when I should expect to see my first payment. My friend said it took her forever but that was during COVID so maybe things are faster now? I lost my job at a warehouse and need to know if I should be looking at other options while I wait. Anyone know the typical timeline for getting approved and receiving benefits?

It usually takes about 2-3 weeks from when you file to get your first payment, assuming there are no issues with your claim. The first week is always a waiting week anyway so you won't get paid for that.

•So even if approved immediately I'm looking at 3 weeks minimum? That's rough but good to know.

•Yeah the waiting week is state law, everyone has to serve it. Just make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even during that waiting period.

The timeline really depends on whether your claim goes into adjudication or not. If Washington ESD needs to verify your job separation or earnings, it can take 4-6 weeks or even longer. Simple layoffs usually process faster than quit/termination situations.

•It was a layoff due to lack of work, so hopefully that helps speed things up.

•Even layoffs can get held up if there's any confusion about your work history or if your employer disputes something.

I've been waiting 5 weeks now and still nothing! My claim is stuck in adjudication and I can't get through to anyone at Washington ESD to find out what's happening. The phone system is absolutely useless.

•Have you tried calling right at 8am when they open? That's usually the best time to get through.

•I've tried everything - calling at 8am, calling during lunch, staying on hold for hours. Either I get disconnected or told to call back later.

•I had the same problem until I found Claimyr. They actually got me through to a Washington ESD agent in like 10 minutes. Check out their website at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

The key is making sure you file your weekly claims every week even if you haven't been approved yet. If you miss weeks you can't go back and claim them later.

•Good point, I'll make sure to keep filing weekly even while waiting for approval.

•This is super important! I missed my second week because I thought I had to wait for approval first and lost out on that payment entirely.

depends on your situation honestly. took me 2 weeks exactly but my buddy waited almost 2 months because they had to verify his previous employer info

•Was there anything specific that caused the delay for your friend?

•his employer never responded to washington esd's requests for information so it just sat there forever

The whole system is broken if you ask me. People need money NOW not 6 weeks from now. What are we supposed to live on while bureaucrats take their sweet time?

•I get the frustration but they do have to verify eligibility. Better to wait and get legitimate benefits than have the system overwhelmed with fraud.

•Meanwhile people are getting evicted and can't buy groceries. There has to be a better way.

If your claim is straightforward - regular layoff, W2 wages, no complications - you're looking at about 2-3 weeks total. Week 1 is the waiting week, Week 2-3 processing time, then payments start. More complex situations take longer.

•That matches what others are saying. Crossing my fingers mine stays simple.

•What counts as 'complications'? I had multiple jobs last year, does that slow things down?

Clarissa Flair
•Multiple W2 jobs usually aren't a problem since Washington ESD gets that info electronically. It's more like job separation issues, 1099 work, or wage disputes that cause delays.

Just went through this process last month. Filed on a Tuesday, got my determination letter the following Friday (approved), and received my first payment exactly 3 weeks after filing. Keep checking your account on the Washington ESD website for updates.

•That's encouraging! Did you have to do anything special or just wait it out?

•Just filed weekly claims and waited. Made sure all my contact info was current so they could reach me if needed.

The payment method matters too. Direct deposit is faster than getting a debit card mailed to you. Make sure you set that up when you file.

•I did choose direct deposit so hopefully that helps.

•The debit card option adds like an extra week for processing and mailing.

I'm in week 6 of waiting and getting desperate. My savings are gone and I can't even get a human on the phone to tell me what's wrong with my claim. This is ridiculous.

•Have you tried Claimyr? I was in a similar situation and they got me connected to an actual Washington ESD representative. Cost a little bit but was totally worth it to finally get answers.

•Never heard of that, is it legit? I'm at the point where I'll try anything.

•Yeah it's real, check out claimyr.com. They basically call for you and get you through the phone queue. Way better than trying to get through yourself.

Washington ESD processing times have definitely improved since the pandemic chaos but it's still not great. Budget for at least a month without income to be safe.

make sure you're doing your job search requirements too even while waiting for approval. they can ask for that log anytime

•Yeah they require 3 job search activities per week. Keep detailed records of everything.

The automated phone system at Washington ESD is the worst thing ever designed. You call, wait on hold forever, then get hung up on automatically. I've been trying for weeks to talk to someone about my adjudication.

•Try using Claimyr if you really need to reach someone. I was skeptical at first but they actually got me through when nothing else worked. Check out their demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ to see how it works.

From what I've seen, most people get their first payment between weeks 3-4 after filing. The waiting week plus processing time. Just keep filing those weekly claims no matter what.

•That seems to be the consensus. I'll plan for 3-4 weeks and hope for the best.

•Exactly, and if there are any issues they'll usually contact you by mail or through your online account.

One thing that helped me was setting up notifications on my Washington ESD account so I'd know immediately if there were any updates or if they needed additional information from me.
0 coins
Ezra Beard
•How do you set that up? I want to make sure I don't miss anything important.

•Log into your account and go to the notification preferences. You can get emails or texts when there are updates.

Bottom line - if everything goes smoothly, expect your first payment 3 weeks after filing. If there are complications, could be 6+ weeks. Keep filing weekly, keep job searching, and be patient. The system is slow but it usually works eventually.

•Thanks everyone for all the helpful info. Sounds like 3-4 weeks is realistic if there are no issues.
