Washington ESD denied my claim - what are the main reasons unemployment can be denied?
Just got a letter saying my Washington ESD unemployment claim was denied and I'm trying to understand why. The letter mentions something about 'not meeting eligibility requirements' but doesn't give much detail. I worked for 18 months at my last job before getting laid off due to budget cuts. Can someone explain the main reasons unemployment can be denied in Washington? I want to know if I should appeal this decision or if there's something I'm missing about the requirements.

There are several common reasons Washington ESD denies claims. Most frequent ones are: not earning enough wages in your base year, quitting without good cause, getting fired for misconduct, not being able and available to work, or not actively seeking work. Did you check your monetary determination to see if you had enough earnings?

•I haven't received a monetary determination yet, just the denial letter. How do I check my base year earnings?

•Log into your SecureAccess Washington account and look for monetary determination under your claim documents. It should show your quarterly wages.

The main categories for denial are: 1) Monetary ineligibility (insufficient wages), 2) Separation issues (quit/fired for cause), 3) Able and available issues, 4) Work search requirements not met, 5) Identity verification problems. Since you were laid off due to budget cuts, separation shouldn't be the issue unless there's something else.

•I definitely was laid off, not fired or quit. Could it be the wage thing? I was making about $42,000 annually.

•At that salary you should have enough wages unless you had gaps in employment. Check if all your employers reported wages correctly to Washington ESD.

Had the same issue last year - turned out one of my previous employers didn't report my wages properly to Washington ESD. I had to contact them directly and get it corrected. The whole process took about 6 weeks but I eventually got approved. You should definitely appeal if you think it's wrong.

•Six weeks?? I can't wait that long without income. Is there any way to speed this up?

•I used a service called Claimyr to get through to Washington ESD agents faster. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that explains how it works. Really helped me get my issue resolved quicker.

wait so you can get denied even if you got laid off??? i thought unemployment was automatic if you lose your job through no fault of your own. this is so confusing

•No, it's not automatic. You still need to meet all the other requirements like having enough wages, being able to work, and actively job searching.

•ugh this system is so complicated. why don't they just tell you upfront what you need?

Another common reason is if you're not a US citizen or don't have work authorization. Also if you're going to school full-time without an approved training program. And sometimes they deny for refusing suitable work offers, even if the job pays less than your previous one.

•I'm a citizen and not in school, so that's not it. Haven't refused any job offers either since I just filed last week.

•Could be an identity verification issue then. Washington ESD has been really strict about that lately.

The Washington ESD system is absolutely RIDICULOUS. They deny claims for the smallest technicalities and then make you jump through hoops to appeal. I got denied because they said I didn't report a part-time job from 2 years ago, even though it was only for 3 weeks!

•That's awful! Did you eventually get it sorted out?

•Yeah but it took 3 months and I almost lost my apartment. The system is broken.

Don't panic yet. Sometimes the denial letters are sent automatically while they're still processing your claim. I'd call Washington ESD directly to clarify what specific reason they're citing for your denial.

•I've been trying to call but can't get through. The phone just rings and rings or I get disconnected.

•Try calling right at 8am when they open. That's usually the best time to get through to someone at Washington ESD.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, you might want to try Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get connected to agents faster. I used it when my claim was stuck in adjudication and it worked great. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

•Is that legit? How much does it cost?

•Yeah it's legitimate, you can check their site at claimyr.com. They focus on helping people reach Washington ESD agents when the normal phone lines are jammed. Much easier than the traditional calling method.

Here's what I'd suggest: 1) Request your monetary determination to check wage eligibility, 2) Review your separation information to make sure it shows layoff not quit/fired, 3) Verify your identity documents were accepted, 4) Check if you missed any required job search activities. Most denials fall into one of these categories.

•This is really helpful, thank you! How do I request the monetary determination?

Emma Davis
•It should be available in your online account under documents. If not there, you can request it through the Washington ESD website or by calling them.

my sister got denied because she had a medical issue and couldn't work for like 2 weeks. they said she wasn't 'able and available' even though she was fine by the time she filed. so stupid

•That's really harsh. Did she appeal it?

•yeah she did and won but it took forever. the whole system needs to be fixed honestly

Sometimes Washington ESD denies claims due to computer glitches or processing errors. I know someone who got denied because their system showed they were still employed when they weren't. Always worth appealing if you know you meet the requirements.

•How long do I have to file an appeal?
0 coins
Isabella Ferreira
•You have 30 days from the date on your denial letter to file an appeal with Washington ESD. Don't wait too long.

Another thing to check - did you work in multiple states? Sometimes there are issues with interstate claims that cause denials. Also if you had any unreported income or side gigs, that could trigger a denial.

•I only worked in Washington state and reported all my income. This is so frustrating.

•Hang in there! Most denials that seem wrong do get overturned on appeal if you have the right documentation.

The key is getting someone at Washington ESD on the phone to explain exactly why you were denied. Once you know the specific reason, you can address it directly. I finally got through using Claimyr after weeks of failed attempts, and the agent was able to clear up my issue immediately.

•I keep hearing about Claimyr. Is it really that much better than just calling normally?

•For me it was. Instead of getting busy signals or being on hold for 3+ hours, I got connected within 20 minutes. Worth checking out their demo video to see how it works.

Don't forget about work search requirements! Even though you just filed, Washington ESD expects you to be actively looking for work from day one. If you haven't started job searching yet, that could be part of the issue.

•I have been applying to jobs, but I haven't been logging them anywhere. Do I need to keep a record?
0 coins
AstroAce
•Yes! You need to log all your job search activities in WorkSourceWA. Three job search activities per week minimum.

•This is probably it! Lots of people get denied for not properly documenting their work search activities.

Whatever the reason for denial, document everything and keep all correspondence from Washington ESD. If you do need to appeal, having a paper trail makes the process much smoother. Good luck!

•Thank you everyone for all the advice! I'm going to check my work search logs first and then try to get through to Washington ESD to understand the specific denial reason.
