Washington ESD asking for someone to verify unemployment activities - who can I list?
I'm filling out my unemployment application and there's a section asking for the name of someone who can verify my unemployment activities and means of support. I'm not sure who to put down here - can it be a family member, friend, or does it need to be someone specific like a former employer? I don't want to mess this up and delay my claim. Has anyone dealt with this part of the Washington ESD application before?

You can list a former coworker, supervisor, or even a professional reference who knows about your work situation. It doesn't have to be your direct manager - just someone who can confirm your employment status and that you're actively looking for work.

•Thanks! Can it be someone from HR at my last job even if I didn't work directly with them?

•Yes, HR would actually be perfect since they have all your employment records and can verify your job search efforts.

I put down my old team lead and it worked fine. They never even called him as far as I know. Just make sure it's someone who would actually answer if Washington ESD contacts them.

•Good point about making sure they'd actually answer. I should probably give whoever I list a heads up.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD about this or other questions, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Made it so much easier to get my questions answered.

•How does that work exactly? Do they just keep calling for you?

StarSurfer
•Yeah basically - they handle the calling and waiting so you don't have to sit on hold for hours. Really saved me time when I needed to clarify stuff on my claim.

I was stressed about this same thing! I ended up using my former supervisor's contact info. The key is just making sure you have their current phone number and that they know you might use them as a reference.

•Did Washington ESD actually contact them or is it just there in case they need to verify something?

•In my case they never called, but I've heard they sometimes do random verification checks so it's good to have a real contact.

You can also use a professional reference like someone from your industry who knows your work history. I used a former client who I worked with regularly and it was fine.

•That's smart - someone outside your company but who still knows your professional situation.

wait what if you dont have any professional contacts? like if you worked alone or your job was kinda isolated?

Malik Jackson
•Even if you worked alone, you probably had some contact with clients, vendors, or other departments. Think about who you interacted with professionally, even briefly.

•oh yeah i guess my main client contact would work, even though we mostly just emailed

I made the mistake of putting down someone who changed their phone number and didn't tell me. Washington ESD couldn't reach them and it caused a delay in my claim processing. Double check your contact info!

•Oh no! How long did that delay your claim?

Diego Chavez
•About 2 weeks while they tried to reach them and then I had to provide a new contact. Learn from my mistake!

Can you use a family member if they know about your job search activities? My spouse has been helping me track applications and would know all the details.

•While family can technically be used, it's better to use professional contacts when possible since they carry more weight. But if your spouse is genuinely involved in your job search process, it could work.

•Makes sense. I'll try to think of a professional contact first but good to know family is a backup option.

The Washington ESD system is so confusing with all these requirements. I spent forever trying to figure out who to list and almost put down my neighbor lol

•Haha yeah the whole application process is pretty overwhelming when you're dealing with losing your job too

I used a former colleague who got laid off at the same time as me. We were both job hunting together so she knew exactly what I was doing for work search activities.

•That's actually perfect since they'd know your situation firsthand.

Just want to mention again that if you need to talk to Washington ESD about this verification requirement or anything else, Claimyr really helped me get through when the phone lines were crazy busy. Worth checking out if you're having trouble reaching them.

•Is there a cost for using that service?

•There is but honestly it was worth it for me to avoid spending entire days trying to get through. The stress relief alone was worth it.

What if the person you list doesn't remember you that well? I'm worried about putting someone down who might not give a good reference.

Malik Jackson
•This isn't really about getting a good reference - it's just about verifying factual information like your employment dates and that you're looking for work. Keep it simple.

Luca Russo
•Oh okay that makes me feel better. I was overthinking it as like a job reference.

I put my direct supervisor but then realized they might ask about my job search activities and my boss wouldn't know about that. Should I have put someone else?

•Your supervisor can verify your employment status, and you're doing your job search activities independently anyway. That should be fine.

This whole verification thing seems like such a hassle. Why do they need someone to verify what you're already telling them in the application?
0 coins
Malik Jackson
•It's just a fraud prevention measure. They want to make sure people aren't making up their employment history or job search efforts.

GalaxyGazer
•I guess that makes sense but still annoying when you're just trying to get help after losing your job

If you freelanced or were self-employed, you could use a client who you worked with regularly. That's what I did and it worked out fine.

•Good tip for freelancers! I didn't think about using clients as verification contacts.

Make sure whoever you list knows they might get a call. I didn't warn my old manager and when Washington ESD called, he was confused about why they were asking about me months after I left.

•Definitely going to give them a heads up. Don't want to surprise anyone with a random call from the government!

Can you change this information later if you need to? Like if the person you listed becomes unavailable?

•You should be able to update your contact information by calling Washington ESD or through your online account, but it's better to get it right the first time if possible.

I was in a similar situation and ended up using someone from my previous job's HR department. They have all the records and are used to these kinds of verification calls.

Emma Thompson
•That's what I'm leaning toward too. HR seems like the safest bet since they deal with this stuff all the time.

Yuki Kobayashi
•Exactly, and they're more likely to be available and responsive compared to individual managers who might have moved on or be too busy.

Just to add another perspective - if you're really stuck and can't reach Washington ESD for clarification, I had success using Claimyr to get through to an agent who explained exactly what they were looking for in that verification contact field.

•How quickly were you able to get through using that?

Carmen Vega
•Much faster than trying to call directly. The regular Washington ESD lines were impossible to get through but this got me connected within a reasonable time.
