Stuck in ESD adjudication after being fired - what does it mean? Family struggling!

Just got notified my ESD unemployment claim is in 'adjudication' and I have NO IDEA what that even means! I was let go on 11/2 - company restructuring, not my fault at all. Filed my claim on 11/15, and everything seemed fine until today when I logged in and saw this 'adjudication' status. All my weekly claims are now pending payment. I've been counting on this money! Already been denied food stamps because they counted income I no longer have. I've got three kids to feed and rent due next week. How long does this adjudication process typically take? Is there anything I can do to speed it up? This is beyond stressful.

Adjudication means ESD is investigating something about your claim. Usually happens when an employer contests your unemployment eligibility or there's a question about why you left your job. Since you were fired, they're probably checking if it was truly no fault of your own. Unfortunately, adjudication can take ANYWHERE from 3-8 weeks right now. It's ridiculous how backed up the system is. Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even though they're pending! If they eventually approve you, you'll get all the back pay at once.

3-8 WEEKS??? Are you serious?? How am I supposed to survive that long with no income? Do they expect people to just magically pay bills while they take their sweet time? This is insane.

5 weeks is ridiculous! Were you able to get through when calling? I've tried 3 times today and just get the 'high call volume' message every time.

I went through adjudication last year. Here's what you need to know: 1. Adjudication means an ESD claims specialist is reviewing your case to determine if you qualify for benefits 2. Since you were fired, they need to verify it wasn't for misconduct 3. They'll likely contact your former employer for their side 4. You should receive a fact-finding questionnaire or phone interview - respond immediately to this! 5. Keep filing your weekly claims on time regardless of the pending status The adjudication process is taking 4-6 weeks on average right now. If you have an immediate financial emergency, you might want to check with local community assistance programs. Some churches and community action agencies offer emergency rent/utility assistance while you wait.

Thank you for breaking it down! I haven't received any questionnaire yet. Is there a way to check if they've sent one? I'm worried I might miss something important in the process.

I HATE the ESD system with a passion!! I got stuck in adjudication for TEN WEEKS last year because my stupid former employer claimed I quit when I was actually laid off. The worst part is ESD never bothered contacting me for my side until week 8!! They just let the claim sit there! When they finally called, it was resolved in 2 days. The whole system is a JOKE designed to make people give up.

Ten weeks is absolutely unacceptable! Did you do anything specific that finally got them to contact you? I'm worried about falling through the cracks.

have you tried calling the ESD office directly? sometimes they can tell you exactly what info they need and speed things up

I've tried calling about 10 times now but can never get through. Just endless wait times and then disconnections. It's so frustrating!

I was stuck in adjudication hell for 6 weeks last winter. What finally worked for me was using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual ESD agent. The regular phone lines are completely useless - I tried for weeks with no success. Claimyr got me through to a real person in about 30 minutes who explained exactly what was holding up my claim and what documents I needed to provide. There's a video demo here if you want to see how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 Once I got through to someone, they expedited my case and I was paid within a week. Worth every penny considering I was about to miss a mortgage payment.

Yes, it definitely worked for me and several people in my job networking group. It's the only way I've found to reliably get through to an actual person at ESD when the phone lines are swamped.

One more important thing - make sure you're still meeting the job search requirements during adjudication (3 job search activities per week). If your claim is approved, they'll check that you were doing this, and if you weren't, they could deny benefits for those weeks even if you're otherwise eligible.

Thanks for the reminder! I've been applying to jobs but wasn't documenting everything properly. Going to fix that right away.

Oh and one more thing - if you're really desperate while waiting, you can contact your state representative's office. I did this in week 7 of my adjudication nightmare and suddenly ESD was calling me within 48 hours. Funny how that works! 🙄

That's a great tip, thank you! I'm going to look up my representative's contact info right now.

UPDATE: I finally got through to ESD using that Claimyr service someone suggested! The agent told me my case was flagged because my employer said I was fired for attendance issues, but I had documentation showing their policy wasn't followed properly. The agent helped me submit the right documentation and said my case should be reviewed within 7-10 days now instead of waiting in the general queue for weeks. Feeling hopeful for the first time in days!
