ESD adjudication started 5 weeks after filing - how much longer will it take?

I filed my unemployment claim back on September 8th and everything seemed fine at first. I've been doing my weekly certifications without any issues. But when I logged in on October 13th, I noticed my claim suddenly says 'Adjudication in Progress' with no explanation! That's more than a month after I started filing. I'm getting really worried since I've been counting on this money. I left a voicemail with the Governor's office a few days ago out of desperation but haven't heard anything back. My savings are almost gone and I can't get through to anyone at ESD by phone. Does anyone know how long adjudication typically takes when it suddenly appears like this? Is there anything I can do to speed up the process?

Unfortunately adjudication can take anywhere from 3-8 weeks right now. ESD doesn't tell you what the issue is until you actually talk to someone. In my experience, when adjudication appears suddenly like that, it's usually because something in your work history or your employer's response raised a flag. Did you get laid off, quit, or fired? That makes a big difference in how long it takes.

Thanks for responding. I was laid off due to budget cuts, and my employer confirmed this when I spoke with them last week. They said they responded to ESD's inquiry right away and confirmed I was eligible. That's why I'm so confused about this adjudication thing appearing out of nowhere! 3-8 more weeks is terrifying when bills are due...

THEY DID THE SAME EXACT THING TO ME!!! Filed in August, everything fine for weeks, then BOOM - adjudication with zero explanation. I couldn't get through on the phones for 2 WEEKS straight!!! This system is completely broken and designed to make people give up. The people who designed this system should have to try living on nothing while waiting for them to get their act together.

That's exactly how I feel right now - like the system is designed to be frustrating. Did your claim eventually get approved? How long did it take?

Sometimes they do random checks even when employer confirms layoff. Double check your weekly certifications to make sure there wasnt something that triggered a flag. Did you report any earnings, refuse work, or travel? Those can trigger adjudication even weeks after filing.

Hmm, I did report some small freelance income on two of my weekly claims. Maybe that's it? But I reported it correctly and it was way under the allowable amount, so I don't understand why that would be a problem.

After dealing with this exact issue last year, I can tell you reaching an actual ESD agent is your best bet. I wasted weeks waiting before I finally got through. When I did, the agent resolved it in 10 minutes - it was just a simple verification issue that couldn't be fixed without talking to someone. Have you tried using Claimyr? It's a service that helps you get through to ESD faster. I used it after fighting busy signals for days. You can see how it works at claimyr.com or watch their demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Seriously saved me weeks of waiting.

Is this service actually legit? I'm always worried about these third party things when it comes to unemployment. Did they need all your personal info?

It's completely legitimate. They don't access your ESD account or need your personal information. They just help you bypass the phone queue. Once you're connected, you're talking directly with an actual ESD agent, not with Claimyr. I was skeptical too but after three weeks of not getting through, I was desperate and it worked.

Thanks for the suggestion. At this point I'm willing to try anything. My rent is due next week and I'm panicking. I'll check out that service today.

6 weeks is so long to wait with no income... but I'm glad yours was resolved eventually. And yes, I'll definitely keep filing my weekly claims.

One important thing to know - after you get through to someone, ask them to put your claim on "hardship status" if you're facing eviction, utility shutoffs, or can't afford necessities. This can expedite your case. Also, contact your state representative's office. They have special channels to ESD and can sometimes move things along faster than even the Governor's office.

Thank you for this advice! I didn't know about the hardship status option. I'm definitely at that point now. And contacting my state rep is a great idea - I'll do that tomorrow morning.

My neighbor works at WorkSource and she said that sometimes adjudication happens because your employer didn't respond to ESD's request for information in time. Even though your employer told YOU they responded, they might not have actually submitted the required info to ESD by the deadline. Just something to consider!

That's a really good point. I'll reach out to my former HR department again to double-check that they actually submitted everything ESD requested. Thank you!

one time my claim got stuck in adjudication becuz I accidentally put the wrong last day of work on my application it was just off by ONE DAY but that caused a whole investigation. check ur original application for any tiny errors that might be causing this

I'll definitely double-check my original application. I was pretty careful when filling it out, but it's possible I made a small error somewhere. Thanks for the tip!

UPDATE: I got through to ESD today using that Claimyr service someone mentioned above. It actually worked! My adjudication was because I had a small 401k withdrawal they thought was severance pay (it wasn't). The agent fixed it on the spot and said my payments should start processing within 48 hours. HUGE relief after weeks of stress!

That's amazing news! So happy it worked out for you. I'm definitely going to try Claimyr tomorrow. Did you have to wait long once you got connected?

Nope, once I got through I only waited about 5 minutes to talk to an actual agent. Way better than the busy signals I kept getting before. Just make sure you have all your claim info ready when they connect you.

Perfect, thank you so much for the follow-up. This gives me hope that I can get this resolved soon!
