Late overpayment installment - will ESD hold my weekly benefit payment?
I'm currently on a monthly repayment plan with ESD for an overpayment from last year. My regular payment was due yesterday (December 26th), but with all the holiday chaos, I completely spaced out and forgot about it! I just made the payment today, but now I'm freaking out that this might mess up my weekly benefit payment. Usually my UI benefit hits my account on Wednesday, but it's still showing 'processing' (probably because of the holiday). Does anyone know if my late overpayment installment will cause ESD to hold my entire weekly benefit? Or will they just deduct my missed payment amount from this week's benefit even though I already paid it separately today? I'm seriously stressing about this because I have rent due on the 1st and can't afford any delays.

You should be fine. I had the exact same thing happen back in October. Made my overpayment 2 days late and my weekly benefit was still processed normally. ESD's systems don't seem to be that interconnected where a late payment automatically triggers a hold. The holiday delay is probably the only reason your payment is still processing.

•Thank you so much for sharing your experience! That's a huge relief. I was having visions of having to explain to my landlord why I'm short on rent.

According to ESD's repayment policies, a single late payment on your repayment plan doesn't automatically trigger a hold on your benefits. However, if you miss multiple payments or are significantly behind, they can start taking up to 50% of your weekly benefits to cover the overpayment. Since you've already made the payment (just one day late), you should be fine. The processing delay is almost certainly due to the holiday schedule. Most banks and government systems are running on modified schedules this week.

•I used to work in financial assistance programming (not ESD specifically). Most government benefit systems have similar policies around repayment arrangements. They generally give some flexibility for occasional missed payments because they understand financial hardship situations.

I missed a payment by a WHOLE WEEK once and nothing happened. ESD sent me a reminder letter about two weeks later, but my benefits kept coming no problem. I think you're stressing for nothing - one day late is nothing to them.

Their system is TERRIBLE!!!! I had a similar situation last year and instead of just taking the payment I already made they DOUBLE DIPPED and took money from my benefits TOO!!!! Took me SIX CALLS to get someone to fix it and even then they didn't refund me for THREE WEEKS!!! ESD is a NIGHTMARE to deal with!!!!

•That sounds frustrating, but also pretty unusual. I've been on a repayment plan for 8 months now and haven't had any issues with them double-charging. Did you make your payment very close to when they were processing your weekly claim? That might have caused the system confusion.

my cousin had this happen and they ended up taking his whole check AND the payment he made. took him forever to get it fixed becuz no one would answer the phone. he finally got through using some service called claimyr.com and got it resolved. they have a video showing how it works https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 - not free but he said worth it after trying to call for 2 weeks

•Oh that's good to know as a backup plan. Hopefully I won't need it, but the way my luck's been going lately... I'll bookmark that service just in case. Thanks!

Just to clarify some confusion in this thread - there are actually two different overpayment collection processes at ESD: 1. Voluntary repayment plans - where you've arranged to make payments on specific dates 2. Benefit offsets - where they automatically take a portion of your benefits If you're on a voluntary plan and miss a payment, they don't automatically switch to offsets. They'll typically send notices first if you've missed multiple payments. Being one day late shouldn't trigger anything in their system. Also, keep in mind that with the holiday, their payment processing is likely delayed anyway. Your payment from today probably won't even register as "late" in their system.

Update: My benefit payment just hit my account this morning! Normal amount, no deductions or delays. Looks like being one day late on the overpayment didn't affect anything. Thanks everyone for your help and reassurance!

•Awesome! Glad it worked out. Holiday stress is bad enough without worrying about benefit payments too.
