How to survive unemployment - Washington ESD tips needed
Lost my job two weeks ago and filed with Washington ESD but still waiting on my first payment. I'm starting to panic about bills piling up and how I'm going to make it through this. Anyone have practical advice on how to survive unemployment while waiting for benefits to kick in? What resources are available in Washington state?

First thing - make sure you're filing your weekly claims on time even if your initial claim is still processing. Washington ESD won't backpay if you miss those weekly filings.

•Good point, I've been doing that religiously. Still shows pending though.

•How long does it usually take for first payment after filing?

Contact 211 for emergency assistance programs in your area. Food banks, utility assistance, rent help - they have a database of everything available. Also check if your county has emergency rental assistance still available from COVID funds.

•Thank you! I didn't know about 211, calling them today.

•211 saved me when I was unemployed last year. They connected me with a food bank and help with my electric bill.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to actual agents. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Might be worth checking out at claimyr.com if you need to talk to someone about your pending claim.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true with how impossible it is to reach Washington ESD by phone.

•I was skeptical too but it actually worked for me. Got through in like 20 minutes instead of calling all day.

•Bookmarking this, might need it if my claim doesn't move soon.

Start tracking EVERYTHING for your job search now. Washington ESD requires 3 job contacts per week and they're getting stricter about documentation. Use WorkSourceWA.com to log your activities.

•Wait, I thought it was just filing weekly claims? There are job search requirements too?

Sean Kelly
•Yes! 3 qualified job search activities per week. Networking, applications, interviews all count. Check your UI handbook.

Budget everything down to the penny. Cut all subscriptions, negotiate payment plans with utilities, call your landlord to explain the situation. Most are understanding if you communicate early.

•This is so important. I waited too long to talk to my landlord and it made things way harder.

•Already canceled Netflix and Spotify. Every dollar counts right now.

Apply for SNAP benefits (food stamps) immediately. Don't wait until you're completely broke. The process takes time and every bit helps.

•Do I qualify if I'm getting unemployment benefits?

Diego Mendoza
•Usually yes, UI income is counted but it's often still low enough to qualify for some SNAP benefits.

Check with your bank about hardship programs. Many have options to defer loan payments or waive fees during unemployment. Credit unions are especially good about this.

•That's a great idea, I have a credit union account. Will call them tomorrow.

Look into gig work for immediate income - DoorDash, Uber, TaskRabbit. Just make sure to report any earnings on your weekly claims or you'll get in trouble with Washington ESD later.

•Be careful with this though. If you earn too much it can affect your UI benefits.

•True, but in Washington you can earn up to your weekly benefit amount and still get partial UI. Better than nothing.

The mental health aspect is huge too. Free counseling through community health centers, support groups, even online resources. Don't underestimate the stress of unemployment.

•Yeah, I'm definitely feeling the anxiety. Thanks for mentioning this.

•Washington state has a mental health crisis line too - 1-866-789-1511. Available 24/7.

If your claim gets stuck in adjudication like mine did, don't just wait around. Keep calling Washington ESD or use that Claimyr thing someone mentioned. My claim sat for 6 weeks because of some employer dispute I didn't even know about.

CosmosCaptain
•6 weeks?! That's terrifying. How did you finally get it resolved?

•Finally got through to an agent who explained the issue. Turns out my former employer contested it but never told me. Agent cleared it up in 10 minutes.

Libraries are your friend. Free internet, job search resources, sometimes even career counseling services. Plus it gets you out of the house which helps mentally.

•Good point about getting out of the house. I've been isolating too much.

Don't forget about COBRA for health insurance if you had employer coverage. It's expensive but cheaper than an ER visit. Washington state also has expanded Medicaid options.

•I need to look into this. Currently uninsured and that's another stress.

•Washington Healthplanfinder.org - you might qualify for subsidies or Medicaid depending on your UI amount.

Meal planning and bulk cooking saved me so much money. Rice, beans, pasta, frozen vegetables. Not exciting but filling and cheap.

•Any specific cheap meal ideas? I'm not much of a cook.

•Bean and rice bowls with whatever vegetables are on sale. Pasta with canned tomatoes and frozen veggies. Oatmeal for breakfast every day.

Network like crazy. Tell everyone you're looking for work. Join professional groups on LinkedIn, attend virtual networking events. Sometimes it's who you know.

•I'm kind of embarrassed to tell people I got laid off.

•Don't be! It's not your fault and people want to help. Just say you're exploring new opportunities.

Keep receipts for job search expenses - gas for interviews, copies of resumes, etc. They're tax deductible and every little bit helps come tax time.

•I didn't know job search expenses were deductible. Good to know!

Join local Facebook groups for job postings and community resources. Nextdoor app too. Sometimes people post jobs that never make it to the big job boards.

•Great idea, I'm not on Nextdoor but will download it.

One more thing about Washington ESD - if you get any correspondence from them, respond immediately. Missed deadlines can disqualify your entire claim. And if you can't reach them by phone, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier really does work for getting through to agents quickly.

CosmosCaptain
•Thanks for the reminder about deadlines. I'll definitely keep Claimyr in mind if I need to reach someone.

Hang in there. I survived 8 months of unemployment in 2019 and came out stronger. It's temporary even though it doesn't feel like it. You've got this!

•Seconding this. Lost my job in March 2020 (worst timing ever) but found something even better 6 months later. Keep pushing forward.

Document everything with Washington ESD. Screenshot your weekly claims, save confirmation numbers, print important emails. If there's ever a dispute you'll need proof.

•Smart advice. I'll start doing this with my weekly claims.

Check if you qualify for utility discounts through LIHEAP or your local utility companies. Many have special programs for people receiving unemployment benefits.

•Puget Sound Energy and Seattle City Light both have low-income discount programs. Worth checking out.
