How quickly can I get unemployment benefits approved in Washington?
Lost my job last Friday and really need to know how fast I can start getting unemployment payments. My rent is due in two weeks and I'm starting to panic. I know I need to file with Washington ESD but have no idea how long the whole process takes. Can anyone give me a realistic timeline? Also heard something about a waiting week - is that still a thing?

You need to file your initial claim ASAP - like today if possible. Washington ESD says it can take 2-3 weeks for your first payment IF everything goes smoothly. The waiting week was eliminated during COVID and hasn't come back yet. But that timeline assumes no issues with your claim.

•2-3 weeks?? That seems like forever when you have bills to pay. What kind of issues could delay it?

•Adjudication is the big one - if there's any question about why you lost your job, how much you earned, etc. That can add weeks or even months to the process.

I filed 3 weeks ago and still haven't seen a penny. My claim got stuck in adjudication because my former employer disputed something. The whole system is a nightmare to navigate and getting anyone on the phone is impossible.

•Have you tried Claimyr? I was in the same boat - couldn't reach Washington ESD for weeks. Found claimyr.com and they actually got me through to an agent the same day. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that but willing to try anything at this point. The regular Washington ESD phone lines are useless.

•Claimyr is legit - they basically handle the calling hassle for you. Worth checking out if you're stuck in adjudication hell.

Filed mine on a Tuesday, got approved the following Monday, first payment hit my account 4 days later. So about 10 days total. But I had a very straightforward layoff situation with no complications.

•Wow that's way faster than what others are saying. What made yours go so smooth?

•Clean termination, employer didn't contest it, had all my wage info ready, and honestly just got lucky I think. My friend filed the same week and she's still waiting after a month.

The key is having all your documentation ready before you file. Last 18 months of employment history, exact dates, gross wages, reason for separation. Missing any of that info will slow things down big time.

•Good to know! I have most of that but need to dig up some old pay stubs. Better to wait a day and have everything right than rush it I guess.

•YES exactly this! I had to go back and amend my application because I rushed through it and got dates wrong. Set me back 2 weeks.

Don't forget you also have to do the WorkSource registration and job search requirements even while your claim is pending. That tripped me up - thought I could wait until approved but turns out you need to start immediately.

•Wait what? I have to start looking for work before I even get approved for benefits?

•Yep, you need to register with WorkSourceWA and start your job search activities right away. It's all part of maintaining eligibility.

•This is getting overwhelming. So many hoops to jump through.

The fastest I've seen is 5 days from filing to first payment, but that was like winning the lottery. More realistic is 2-4 weeks if you're lucky, 6-8 weeks if there are any hiccups. Washington ESD is just understaffed and overwhelmed.

•6-8 weeks is more accurate in my experience. And that's IF you can get through when they need to verify something. The phone system is a joke.

•This is why services like Claimyr exist - they cut through all the phone tag BS and actually get you connected to real people at Washington ESD when you need help.

Pro tip: file your claim on Sunday night or Monday morning. I've heard the system is less likely to have glitches then, and you get your weekly claim cycle started on the right day.

•Good timing advice! I was just going to file whenever I got around to it.

•Also make sure to file even if you think you might not qualify. Better to have them tell you no than to miss out on benefits you were entitled to.

Been through this 3 times unfortunately. Best case scenario is 10-14 days. Worst case (like my second claim) was 3 months because of an employer dispute. Have a backup plan for at least a month of expenses.

•3 months?! That's terrifying. What happened with the employer dispute?

•They claimed I was fired for misconduct when I was actually laid off. Took forever to get a hearing scheduled and then more time for the decision. Eventually won but it was brutal financially.

•Employer disputes are the worst. They hold up everything while you're stuck in limbo. At least you can appeal if they rule against you initially.

Current processing times on the Washington ESD website say 21 days for non-monetary determinations but that's probably optimistic. I'd plan for at least a month before seeing any money.

•A month feels like forever but I guess that's reality. Better to plan for that than get caught off guard.

•The 21 days starts AFTER they've verified all your information, not from when you first file. Big difference there.

Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even if your initial claim isn't approved yet. You can't get paid for weeks you didn't file for, even retroactively. Learned that the hard way.

•So I file the initial claim and then immediately start doing weekly claims too? Even before approval?
0 coins
Libby Hassan
•Exactly! You'll get a message in your account telling you when to file your first weekly claim. Don't skip any weeks.

•This is super important - I know people who lost thousands because they thought they should wait for approval before filing weekly claims.

If you're really desperate and can't wait, some food banks and emergency assistance programs don't require you to wait for unemployment approval. Just saying, in case you need immediate help with basics.

•Thanks for that suggestion. Hopefully won't need it but good to know there are other options if things get really tight.

•211 is a good resource for finding local assistance programs. Just dial 2-1-1 from any phone.

Bottom line - file today, have realistic expectations of 3-4 weeks minimum, keep all your documentation, and don't panic if it takes longer. The money will come eventually if you qualify, but the system just moves slowly.

•Alright, filing today for sure. Thanks everyone for the reality check. At least I know what to expect now.

•Good luck! The waiting is the hardest part but you'll get through it. And seriously consider that Claimyr service if you run into issues - wish I'd known about it during my claim.
