How to register for work for unemployment benefits in Washington ESD - confused about WorkSource requirements
I just got approved for unemployment and Washington ESD is telling me I need to register for work but I'm completely lost on what this actually means. Do I have to go somewhere in person or can I do this online? I've heard about WorkSource but don't know if that's the same thing. My weekly claim is asking about job search activities but I haven't registered anywhere yet. Can someone explain the whole process? I'm worried I'm going to mess up my benefits if I don't do this right.

You register for work through WorkSource WA online at worksourcewa.com. It's required within 7 days of filing your unemployment claim. You'll create a profile, upload your resume, and that satisfies the work registration requirement. Don't worry - it's pretty straightforward once you get started.

•Thank you! Do I need to do anything else after creating the profile or is that it for the registration part?

•Just make sure your profile is complete with work history and skills. After that you'll use it to log your job search activities for your weekly claims.

worksourcewa.com is the official site. You have to register there and keep your profile active. They'll walk you through setting up everything you need for the work search requirements.

•How long does it take to get the account set up? I'm filing my weekly claim tomorrow and getting nervous about missing something.

•Maybe 30-45 minutes if you have your work history ready. Don't stress too much - as long as you're making the effort they won't penalize you for being a day or two late on registration.

I had such a hard time getting through to Washington ESD when I had questions about this whole process. Spent hours on hold just to ask basic questions about work registration requirements. Finally found this service called Claimyr that actually got me connected to a real person at Washington ESD within minutes. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works. Game changer for getting answers about stuff like this.

•Really? How much does something like that cost? I'm already stressed about money.

•It's way cheaper than losing benefits over confusion. The peace of mind knowing I could actually talk to someone at Washington ESD was worth it for me.

•I've heard of Claimyr too. Friend of mine used it when her claim got stuck in adjudication and she needed to talk to someone fast.

the whole system is ridiculous honestly. why do we have to jump through all these hoops just to get benefits we paid into??? register here, log activities there, its like they want us to fail

•I get the frustration but the work search requirements are actually federal law, not just Washington ESD being difficult.

•still annoying as hell when you're already stressed about money and they pile on more paperwork

Wait so WorkSource registration is different from the actual job searching we have to do each week? I'm so confused about all this.

Dmitry Petrov
•Registration is a one-time thing. Then you use WorkSource to track your ongoing job search activities for your weekly claims.

•Got it, thanks. This whole process has so many moving parts.

•Right? I feel like I need a manual just to understand what I'm supposed to do each week.

Pro tip: when you're setting up your WorkSource profile, spend time on the skills section. It helps with job matching and makes your weekly job search activities easier to track.

•Good advice. Should I put skills from jobs I had years ago or just recent ones?
0 coins
Connor O'Neill
•Include relevant skills even if they're older, especially if they apply to jobs in your field. The system uses them for matching.

ugh I procrastinated on this and now its been like 10 days since I filed. am I screwed?? washington esd is gonna cut off my benefits aren't they

Dmitry Petrov
•Just register now and explain the delay if they ask. Usually they give some leeway as long as you weren't trying to avoid the requirement.

•ok going to do it right now. thanks for not making me feel like an idiot about waiting

•We've all been there with unemployment stuff. The important thing is getting it done.

Does anyone know if you can register for work if you're on standby status? My employer says I might get called back but Washington ESD wants me to register anyway.

Dmitry Petrov
•Yes, even on standby you usually need to register unless you have a specific exemption. Check with your Washington ESD case or call them to confirm your situation.

•That's what I was afraid of. Guess I better get registered just to be safe.

I registered months ago but haven't kept my profile updated. Is that going to be a problem? My skills and resume are probably outdated now.

Connor O'Neill
•You should update it periodically. Not sure if it affects benefits directly but it definitely helps with job matching.

Amina Toure
•Yeah I should probably spend some time cleaning it up. Thanks for the reminder.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for explaining this. I was putting off registration because I didn't understand what it meant and was worried I'd do something wrong.

One thing to watch out for - make sure you're on the actual WorkSource WA site and not some scam site. There are fake job sites that try to collect your info.

•Good point. The real one is worksourcewa.com right?

FireflyDreams
•Yes, that's the official Washington state site. Always double check the URL.

this might be dumb but do I have to actually apply for jobs through WorkSource or can I apply directly to companies and just log it in the system?
0 coins
Dmitry Petrov
•You can apply anywhere and log the activity in WorkSource. You don't have to use their application system exclusively.

Natasha Kuznetsova
•oh thank god because their job application interface is terrible

•Haha yeah it's not the most user friendly but it gets the job done for tracking purposes.

I've been using Claimyr whenever I need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD about requirements like this. So much better than trying to call directly. The wait times are insane otherwise.

StormChaser
•How quickly did they connect you? I've been thinking about trying it.

Javier Morales
•Usually within a few minutes. Way better than the 2+ hour waits I was dealing with before.

Quick question - if I'm looking for work in a different field than my last job, should I register under my old job category or the new field I'm targeting?
0 coins
Connor O'Neill
•You can put both. Include your experience but also add the fields you're interested in exploring. It gives you more flexibility.

•That makes sense. I was overthinking it thinking I had to pick just one path.

I registered but now I'm getting tons of job alerts emailed to me. Is there a way to turn those off or adjust the frequency?

Connor O'Neill
•Check your notification settings in your WorkSource profile. You should be able to customize what alerts you get.

•Found it, thanks! Was getting like 20 emails a day which was overwhelming.

For anyone still confused about this stuff, I ended up using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier to get connected with Washington ESD directly. The person I talked to walked me through the whole work registration process step by step. Sometimes it's worth paying a little to get clear answers instead of guessing.

•Was it hard to use? I'm not super tech savvy.

•Super easy. You just go to their site and they handle getting you connected. Much simpler than trying to navigate Washington ESD's phone system.

One last tip for anyone reading this - make sure to save your WorkSource login info somewhere safe. You'll be using it every week for job search logging and it's a pain to reset if you forget.

•Good reminder! I always forget passwords and this would be a bad one to lose track of.

•Exactly. It's not just a one-time registration - you'll need regular access to it for as long as you're claiming benefits.

This thread has been incredibly helpful! I was in the exact same boat as you - just got approved and was totally confused about the work registration requirement. Reading through everyone's experiences here, it sounds like the WorkSource registration at worksourcewa.com really is the main thing Washington ESD is looking for. I'm planning to set aside an hour this evening to get it done properly. It's reassuring to know that even if you're a few days late, they're usually understanding as long as you're making the effort. Thanks to everyone who shared their knowledge here - you probably saved a bunch of us from stressing out unnecessarily!

•Absolutely agree! This whole thread turned what seemed like a really confusing requirement into something manageable. I was getting so anxious about messing up my benefits, but seeing everyone's step-by-step explanations makes it clear that it's just a matter of getting registered and staying on top of it. Going to bookmark this thread for reference when I start doing my weekly claims too!

Just want to echo what everyone else is saying - this thread is a lifesaver! I was in the same exact position a few weeks ago, completely lost about the work registration thing. The WorkSource registration at worksourcewa.com really is straightforward once you know what you're doing. One thing I'd add is don't stress too much about making your profile perfect right away - you can always go back and update your resume and skills later. The important thing is just getting registered within that 7-day window so you stay compliant with the requirements. Good luck everyone!
