How to sign up on unemployment - Washington ESD application process help needed
I just got laid off from my retail job yesterday and need to figure out how to sign up on unemployment benefits through Washington ESD. I've never done this before and honestly have no idea where to start. Do I need to go to an office in person or can I do it all online? What documents do I need to have ready? Also heard something about needing to register with WorkSource - is that separate from filing the unemployment claim? Really stressed about this whole process and could use some guidance from anyone who's been through it recently.

You can file everything online through the Washington ESD website at esd.wa.gov. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months including employer names, addresses, and dates worked. The whole application takes about 30-45 minutes if you have all your info ready.

•Thanks! Do I need to wait a certain amount of time after being laid off or should I file right away?

•File as soon as possible! Your claim starts the week you file, not when you were laid off. Don't wait or you'll lose potential benefits.

Make sure you have your bank account info for direct deposit too. Way faster than waiting for a check in the mail. Also yes you do need to register with WorkSourceWA separately - they'll tell you about that after you file your initial claim.

•Good point about direct deposit. How long does the WorkSource registration take?

•Maybe 20 minutes? It's pretty straightforward, just creating a profile and uploading your resume.

If you run into issues with the online system or need to talk to someone at Washington ESD, good luck getting through on the phone. I've been trying to reach them for weeks about my claim. Found this service called Claimyr that actually gets you connected to ESD agents - check out claimyr.com and their demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

•Is that legit? Seems too good to be true with how hard it is to reach Washington ESD.

•Yeah I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Got through to an ESD rep in like 15 minutes instead of calling all day.

•Hopefully I won't need to call but good to know there's an option if the online filing doesn't work.

The most important thing is having accurate employment information. If you worked multiple jobs or had any gaps, make sure you can explain them. Washington ESD will verify everything with your employers so don't guess on dates or wages.

•What if I don't remember exact start/end dates from a job I had 8 months ago?

•Check your old pay stubs or tax documents. You can also call your former employer's HR department - they usually have that info readily available.

•Look for the big 'Apply for Benefits' button on the homepage. It's there but yeah the site could be more user-friendly.

•found it finally, thanks. still think they could make it way clearer for people who've never done this before

Just a heads up - after you file your initial claim, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to keep getting benefits. It's super important not to miss those deadlines or you could lose payments for that week.

•How do I file the weekly claims? Same website?

Sophia Carter
•Yep, same site. You'll get instructions after your initial claim is processed. Usually takes about a week to hear back.

Make sure you're actually eligible before filing. You need to have worked enough hours and earned enough wages in your base period. There's an eligibility tool on the Washington ESD website that can give you an idea.

•I worked full-time for 2 years at my last job so I think I should be good, but I'll check that tool just in case.

Chloe Zhang
•Yeah you should definitely qualify with that work history. The tool is helpful anyway to see what your potential benefit amount might be.

Don't forget you'll need to actively look for work and keep a log of your job search activities. Washington ESD requires at least 3 job search activities per week unless you're in certain programs.

•What counts as job search activities?

•Applying for jobs, networking events, job fairs, informational interviews. They have a full list on the ESD website.

•WorkSource workshops count too! They have tons of free career development stuff.

File online for sure. I tried going to the office and they just told me to file online anyway. Plus with COVID they're still limiting in-person services.

•Good to know, saves me a trip. Thanks!

One more tip - if your claim gets flagged for adjudication (which happens randomly sometimes), don't panic. It just means they need to verify some information. Can take a few weeks but you'll get backpay once it's resolved.

Savannah Weiner
•What's adjudication exactly?

Jace Caspullo
•It's when they need to investigate something about your claim - like verifying you were laid off and not fired for misconduct. Pretty routine but causes delays.

•That's actually when Claimyr really helped me out. Had to call ESD about my adjudication status and couldn't get through until I used their service.

The whole system is a mess tbh. I filed 6 weeks ago and still haven't gotten a penny. Keep getting different answers every time I manage to reach someone at Washington ESD.

•That's terrible! Have you tried contacting your state representative's office? Sometimes they can help with ESD issues.

•Didn't know that was an option. Might try that if this drags on much longer.

•How long did the whole application take you?

Quick question for OP - were you laid off or terminated? If you were fired for misconduct that could affect your eligibility. Just want to make sure you're prepared for that question on the application.

Savannah Weiner
•Definitely laid off due to company downsizing. They gave me a letter stating it was due to economic reasons.

Kristian Bishop
•Perfect, keep that letter! That'll help if there are any questions about your separation.

Also remember that unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld or pay them when you file your return next year.

Savannah Weiner
•Good point, I hadn't thought about taxes. Probably better to have them withheld so I don't get hit with a big bill later.

The waiting week is gone now so you should get benefits for your first week if you're approved. That changed during COVID and they kept it that way.

Savannah Weiner
•That's good news! Every week counts when you're out of work.

Make sure to read all the instructions carefully. I rushed through my application and made some mistakes that caused delays. Better to take your time and get it right the first time.

•Thanks for the reminder. I'll definitely take my time and double-check everything.

If you need help during the application, there's usually a help chat feature on the ESD website. Not always staffed but worth trying if you get stuck.

•Good to know there's help available. Hopefully the application is straightforward enough that I won't need it.

Last thing - once you file, you'll get a confirmation number. Write it down! You'll need it if you have to call about your claim later.

•Will do! Thanks to everyone for all the helpful advice. Feeling much more confident about filing now.

•And remember, if you do need to call Washington ESD for any reason, Claimyr is there to help you actually get through. Much better than spending all day on hold!

Good luck OP! The process isn't as scary as it seems once you get started. Just be patient because everything with ESD takes longer than you'd expect.

One final tip - create your eServices account first before starting the application. It'll save you time and you'll use that account for your weekly claims too.

•Great advice! I'll do that first step today.
