How to know if my Washington ESD unemployment was approved - confused about status

I submitted my unemployment claim about 10 days ago and I'm getting mixed signals about whether it was actually approved or not. My SecureAccess Washington account shows some kind of status but I can't tell if it means I'm good to go or still waiting. I got one letter in the mail but it was mostly just confirming they received my application. When I try to file my weekly claim it lets me do it but then says 'pending' afterwards. Does this mean I'm approved but just waiting for payment, or am I still in some kind of review process? I really need to know because I have bills coming due and I'm starting to panic about whether I'll get any money at all.

Check your account for a monetary determination letter - that's what tells you if you're approved and how much you'll get per week. If you can file weekly claims, that's usually a good sign but doesn't guarantee approval.

I see something called 'benefit year established' but no letter about money amounts yet. Should I be worried?

0 coins

That's normal - the monetary determination can take up to 2 weeks. As long as you can keep filing your weekly claims you should be okay.

0 coins

same thing happened to me, took forever to get a straight answer about my status

0 coins

How long did it take for you to know for sure? I'm losing my mind here

0 coins

like 3 weeks total but I kept filing weekly claims the whole time and eventually got paid retroactively

If you're really worried about your status and can't get through on the phone, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr that actually helps you reach Washington ESD agents. They have this system that gets you connected without waiting on hold for hours. Check out claimyr.com - they even have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Might be worth it just to get a real person to explain your claim status.

0 coins

Thanks, I'll look into that. I've been trying to call for days but keep getting disconnected.

0 coins

Never heard of that service but honestly anything is better than spending all day trying to get through their phone system

0 coins

Yeah it saved me a ton of time when I needed to check on my adjudication status. Way better than the usual phone nightmare.

0 coins

Look for these specific things in your account: 1) Benefit year established date, 2) Weekly benefit amount (even if it shows $0 temporarily), 3) Any 'issues' or 'adjudication' flags. If you see adjudication that means they're still reviewing something about your claim.

0 coins

I don't see any adjudication flags but my weekly benefit amount just shows dashes, not even $0

0 coins

Dashes usually means they haven't processed your monetary determination yet. Should clear up in the next week or two.

0 coins

This is exactly what I needed to know, thank you! Been staring at those dashes wondering what they meant

0 coins

The Washington ESD system is so confusing!! I thought I was approved but then they said I owed them money back, makes no sense

0 coins

Wait what? They can approve you and then ask for money back?

0 coins

That's usually an overpayment issue from reporting work hours incorrectly. Different from initial approval status.

0 coins

oh ok that makes more sense, I was freaking out thinking they could just change their mind randomly

0 coins

Here's the timeline you should expect: Application submitted → Benefit year established (3-5 days) → Monetary determination letter (1-2 weeks) → First payment (if no issues, within a week of monetary determination). You're probably somewhere between steps 2 and 3 right now.

0 coins

This breakdown is super helpful, I think I'm at step 2 then. Should I keep filing weekly claims even if I don't know my benefit amount yet?

0 coins

Yes absolutely! Always file your weekly claims or you could lose benefits for those weeks even if you get approved later.

0 coins

Wish someone had told me this earlier, I missed filing one week thinking I should wait for approval

0 coins

pro tip: set up direct deposit now if you haven't already, even before you're officially approved. saves time later

0 coins

Good call, I'll do that today. Do you set it up through the same SecureAccess Washington site?

0 coins

yeah its under payment preferences or something like that in your account settings

0 coins

I was in the exact same boat last month. The waiting is the worst part because you just don't know. But if you can file weekly claims and there's no red flags in your account, you're probably fine. The system is just slow.

0 coins

How long did your whole process take from application to first payment?

0 coins

About 3 weeks total, but I filed my weekly claims the whole time so when it got approved I got paid for all the back weeks

0 coins

That's reassuring, thanks. I'll keep being patient and filing my weeklies

0 coins

Washington ESD really needs to fix their communication. Half the stress comes from not knowing what's happening with your claim. They should send updates or at least have clearer status messages.

0 coins

agreed, the whole system feels like it was designed to confuse people

0 coins

I think they do it on purpose to discourage people from applying honestly

0 coins

More likely just outdated systems and understaffing, but the effect is the same - lots of confusion for claimants

0 coins

Check if you got any correspondence in your SecureAccess Washington inbox too, not just physical mail. Sometimes important updates only show up there.

0 coins

Good point, I'll check that right now. I've only been looking at the main dashboard

0 coins

Yeah the correspondence section is easy to miss but that's where they put most of the important stuff

0 coins

Update on the Claimyr thing I mentioned earlier - I used it again last week when I had a question about my job search requirements and got through to someone in like 10 minutes instead of spending half my day on hold. Really worth it when you need actual answers from a real person.

0 coins

Do they actually connect you to Washington ESD staff or is it their own people?

0 coins

Real Washington ESD agents, they just have a way to get you through the phone queue faster. The agent I talked to was definitely official ESD staff.

0 coins

I might try this if I don't hear something definitive by next week. Thanks for the tip!

0 coins

don't panic yet, 10 days is still pretty normal processing time especially if there's no issues with your claim

0 coins

I know you're right, it's just hard not to worry when bills are piling up

0 coins

totally understand, been there myself. just keep filing those weekly claims and it should work out

0 coins

I had a similar experience where I could file weekly claims but wasn't sure about my status. Turned out I was approved the whole time but the system just takes forever to update all the displays properly. As long as you're not getting error messages when you file your weekly claim, you're probably good.

0 coins

That makes me feel better. No error messages, just the pending status after I submit each week

0 coins

Yeah that's normal. Pending just means they're processing that specific week's claim, not that your overall claim is in doubt

0 coins

wish they made this clearer, the terminology is so confusing

0 coins

Key signs you're approved: benefit year established, ability to file weekly claims without errors, no adjudication issues listed. The monetary determination letter is just the final confirmation with your payment amounts.

0 coins

Based on this checklist I think I'm actually approved then, just waiting for the official letter. Thanks!

0 coins

Sounds like it! The hardest part is just being patient while their system catches up with the paperwork

0 coins

My advice: screenshot everything in your account right now in case something changes or gets lost. I learned this the hard way when I had to prove what my account showed on a specific date.

0 coins

Smart thinking, I'll do that tonight. Better safe than sorry with these government systems

0 coins

Great advice, I do this every time I file my weekly claim now

0 coins

The fact that you can file weekly claims is the biggest indicator that you're approved. They wouldn't let you do that if your claim was denied or had major issues. The monetary determination is really just paperwork at that point.

0 coins

This is exactly what I needed to hear. I've been overthinking this whole thing

0 coins

Yeah it's natural to worry but the system actually works pretty logically once you understand the flow

0 coins

I wish someone had explained this to me when I first applied, would have saved me weeks of stress

0 coins

One more thing to check - make sure your job search activities are up to date in WorkSourceWA if they're requiring that. Sometimes that can hold up payments even if your claim is approved.

0 coins

Good reminder, I've been doing job searches but haven't updated the system in a few days

0 coins

Yeah they're pretty strict about that now, better to stay current to avoid any delays

0 coins

From what you described, you're probably approved and just waiting for the monetary determination. Keep filing weekly claims and check your account regularly. The money will show up once they finish the paperwork.

0 coins

Thank you everyone for all the help and reassurance. I feel much better about my situation now and know what to look for

0 coins

Glad we could help! Come back if you have any other questions as the process continues

0 coins

Just wanted to add that if you do end up needing to call Washington ESD for any reason, that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier really does work. Used it myself when I had an issue with my standby claim and got through immediately.

0 coins

Good to know it's legit, I was a little skeptical at first but might give it a try if I need to call

0 coins

Yeah I was skeptical too but when you really need to talk to someone it's worth it. Beats sitting on hold all day
