How soon can you collect unemployment benefits after filing with Washington ESD?
Just got laid off yesterday and wondering how quickly I can start getting unemployment payments through Washington ESD. My last day was Tuesday and I'm trying to figure out when I should file and when the first payment might come. I've never done this before so not sure about the timing - do I need to wait a certain period or can I apply right away? Really need to know because rent is due in 2 weeks.

You can file your initial claim right away, don't wait! There's a one-week waiting period before benefits start, so the sooner you file the better. Your first payment usually comes 2-3 weeks after filing if everything goes smoothly.

•Thanks! Should I file today or wait until the weekend? Not sure if it matters.

•File today if you can. The waiting week starts from when you file your initial claim, not when you lost your job.

Just to clarify - you have to wait one full week before you can even start receiving benefits. So if you file today, your first payable week would be next week, and you'd get paid the week after that assuming no delays.

•Wait I'm confused, I thought the waiting week was automatic? Do you still have to file weekly claims during the waiting period?

Quinn Herbert
•Yes you still file weekly claims during the waiting week, you just don't get paid for that first week. It's basically unpaid but you have to do it.

The timing depends on if your claim goes into adjudication or not. If Washington ESD needs to verify anything about your separation, it could take weeks longer. I'd recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an agent if you run into delays - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•What kinds of things cause adjudication? Trying to avoid any delays if possible.

•Usually job separation issues - if you quit, were fired for cause, or if there's any dispute about why you left. Since you said you were laid off it should be straightforward.

ugh the whole system is so slow, I filed 3 weeks ago and still waiting for my first payment because of some stupid verification thing

•Have you tried calling them? I know it's hard to get through but sometimes they can expedite things.

•tried calling like 50 times, always busy or they hang up on me after being on hold forever

Make sure you have all your documents ready when you file - W2s, pay stubs, separation notice if you have one. Having everything ready can prevent delays in processing your claim.

•I have my last pay stub but no separation notice yet - should I wait for that or file without it?

Shelby Bauman
•File without it, you can always upload documents later. Don't delay filing just because you're missing one document.

Quick tip - set up direct deposit when you file, otherwise you'll be waiting even longer for paper checks to arrive in the mail.

•Good point! How long do paper checks usually take?

•Like 7-10 days after the payment is issued, so it adds another week+ to your wait time.

Been through this before - typical timeline is file claim, wait one week, then if approved you get paid weekly after that. But Washington ESD is super backed up lately so add extra time.

•How backed up are we talking? Like days or weeks?

Hugo Kass
•Could be anywhere from a few extra days to several weeks depending on your situation. Really depends on their workload.

The key thing is filing your weekly claims every week even during the waiting period. Miss a week and you lose that week's benefits permanently.

•When do the weekly claims open? Is it the same day every week?

•Usually Sunday mornings, but check your account for your specific schedule. They'll tell you when your next filing date is.

If you're worried about delays or need to check on your claim status, I had good luck with that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier. They got me through to a real person at Washington ESD in like 10 minutes instead of the hours I was spending trying to call.

•Is that one of those paid services? Seems sketchy to pay someone to make a phone call for you.

•I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Way better than wasting hours on hold every day. Check out their demo video if you're curious.

Also worth noting - your benefit amount is based on wages from your base period, which is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters. So depending on your work history, you might qualify for more or less than you expect.

Josef Tearle
•How do I find out what my benefit amount will be? Do they tell you when you file?
0 coins
Quinn Herbert
•You'll get a monetary determination letter after you file that shows your weekly benefit amount and how many weeks you qualify for.

just file asap honestly, every day you wait is money you're not getting

•Yeah you're right, I'm going to do it today. Thanks everyone for the help!

One more thing - make sure you're actively looking for work and keeping a job search log. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week and they do check on this.

•What counts as a job search activity? Just applying for jobs or other stuff too?

Shelby Bauman
•Applying for jobs, networking, attending job fairs, interviewing, even some training activities. Keep detailed records of everything.

I filed 4 weeks ago and just got my first payment last week, so don't panic if it seems slow. The system works but it takes time.

Josef Tearle
•That's actually reassuring to hear. Were there any issues with your claim or did it just take that long normally?

Brian Downey
•No issues, just the normal processing time plus the waiting week. It felt like forever when I was waiting though.

update: finally got through to someone using that claimyr thing and they cleared up my issue in 5 minutes. wish i had known about it weeks ago

•Nice! What was the issue that was holding up your claim?

•they just needed to verify my identity, super simple but it was stuck in the system for weeks

Quick question - do weekends count toward the waiting week or just business days?
0 coins
Quinn Herbert
•It's calendar days, so weekends count. The waiting week is literally 7 consecutive days from when you file.

•Got it, thanks for clarifying that!

Also remember that unemployment is taxable income, so you might want to have taxes withheld or set money aside for tax season.
0 coins
Josef Tearle
•Good point, I hadn't thought about taxes. Can you have them withhold taxes automatically?
0 coins
Landon Flounder
•Yes, you can elect to have 10% federal tax withheld when you set up your claim. Highly recommend it.

The whole process stressed me out so much when I first did it, but it's really not that complicated once you get started. Just file today and get the ball rolling.

Make sure your contact info is up to date in your claim - if Washington ESD needs to reach you and can't, it can delay everything.

Josef Tearle
•Good tip! I should update my address since I just moved last month.

Ally Tailer
•Yeah definitely update that before filing. Any communication delays can really slow things down.

Final advice - bookmark the Washington ESD website and check your account regularly. They'll post updates about your claim status and any actions you need to take.

Glad we could help! And remember, if you do run into issues reaching Washington ESD by phone later, that Claimyr service at claimyr.com is there as a backup option. Good luck with your claim!
