How much is unemployment benefits in Washington - need to know weekly amount
I'm trying to figure out how much I'll get for unemployment benefits if I file with Washington ESD. I was making about $52,000 a year at my last job before getting laid off last week. Does anyone know how they calculate the weekly benefit amount? I've heard different things from people and want to know what to expect before I submit my application.

Washington ESD calculates your weekly benefit amount based on your highest earning quarter in your base period. The maximum weekly benefit for 2025 is $999 plus a $25 weekly addition, so $1,024 total. Your base period is the first four of the last five completed quarters before you file your claim.

•Thanks! So they look at my highest quarter earnings, not my annual salary?

Malia Ponder
•Exactly. They take your highest quarter earnings, divide by 26, then that's your weekly benefit amount up to the maximum.

i think its around 60% of what you were making but dont quote me on that lol. when i filed last year i was getting like $400 something a week

•It's not exactly 60% - that's a common misconception. Washington uses a specific formula based on your quarterly earnings, not a simple percentage of your wages.

•oh ok good to know, i always wondered why my amount seemed different than what people told me to expect

If you made $52k annually, your quarterly earnings were probably around $13k per quarter. Dividing by 26 would put you somewhere around $500 weekly, but you should use the Washington ESD benefit calculator on their website to get an exact estimate.

•I didn't know there was a calculator on their site. Is it accurate?

Gianni Serpent
•Pretty accurate as long as you have your wage information handy. It'll give you a good ballpark figure.

•The calculator is helpful but sometimes the actual amount differs slightly when they process your claim and verify your wages with employers.

Getting through to Washington ESD to ask questions about benefit amounts has been nearly impossible for me. I've been calling for days trying to get clarification on my benefit calculation and keep getting busy signals or hung up on after waiting on hold for hours. Has anyone found a reliable way to actually talk to someone there?

•I had the same problem until I discovered Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents without the endless calling. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works. Saved me so much frustration.

•Never heard of that before. Does it actually work or is it just another scam?

•It's legit. I was skeptical too but they got me connected to an agent within a couple hours instead of me wasting entire days trying to call.

The benefit amount also depends on whether you have any dependents. You can get additional money for dependent allowances if you qualify.

•I have two kids under 18. How much extra would that be?

Joshua Hellan
•For 2025, it's $37 per dependent per week, up to 5 dependents maximum. So with two kids you'd get an extra $74 weekly on top of your regular benefit amount.

Just remember you'll need to file your weekly claims every week to keep getting paid. Missing even one week can cause delays and you might have to call Washington ESD to fix it, which as others mentioned is a nightmare.

•How do you file the weekly claims? Is it online?

Jibriel Kohn
•Yes, through the SecureAccess Washington (SAW) portal. You have to answer questions about any work you did that week and any job search activities.

•And make sure you keep track of your job search activities! Washington requires 3 job search activities per week unless you're on standby with your employer.

The benefit amount is just the start of your worries. Wait until you see how long adjudication takes if there are any issues with your claim!

Holly Lascelles
•What's adjudication? Should I be worried about that?

Edison Estevez
•It's when they review your claim for any potential issues. Can take weeks or months depending on the complexity. Hopefully yours will be straightforward.

Does anyone know if the $52k salary would put him over any thresholds? I thought there were some income limits but I'm not sure how they work with the quarterly calculation.

Malia Ponder
•There's no income limit for qualifying for unemployment benefits. The limits are about minimum earnings requirements in your base period, not maximum earnings.

•Good to know, thanks for clarifying that.

I'm in a similar situation and used Claimyr to get through to Washington ESD about my benefit calculation. The agent was able to walk me through exactly how they calculated my amount and explained some details that weren't clear from the website. Worth checking out if you need to talk to someone directly.

•How much does that service cost though? If I'm unemployed I don't want to spend money I don't have.

•It's worth it to get accurate information rather than guessing. I was stressing about my claim status for weeks before I used it.

make sure you apply as soon as possible! benefits start from the week you file, not from when you lost your job. i waited 2 weeks and lost out on those benefit payments

Holly Lascelles
•Really? I thought it would backdate to when I got laid off. That's good to know!

Mia Green
•nope, only backdates in very specific circumstances. file asap!

The whole Washington ESD system is so confusing. Between figuring out benefit amounts, weekly claims, job search requirements, and trying to actually reach someone when you have questions, it's overwhelming for someone who's never been unemployed before.

•It definitely has a learning curve, but once you get the hang of the weekly filing routine it becomes easier. The hardest part is usually the initial setup and any issues that require talking to an agent.

•That's why services like Claimyr are so helpful. Takes the stress out of trying to reach Washington ESD when you actually need to talk to someone.

Your timing is actually good - Washington ESD has been processing claims faster lately compared to during the pandemic years. Still expect some delays but not as bad as 2020-2021.

Holly Lascelles
•That's reassuring. I was worried about long delays based on horror stories I heard from friends.

•Those were mostly from the pandemic when they were swamped. Still not perfect but much better now.

Don't forget about taxes! Your unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can have taxes withheld or pay quarterly estimated taxes.

Holly Lascelles
•Oh no, I didn't think about taxes. How much do they typically withhold?
0 coins
Charlie Yang
•Federal withholding is 10% if you elect it. No state income tax in Washington so that's not a concern here.

If you get approved, make sure you understand the difference between your weekly benefit amount and your maximum benefit amount. The weekly is what you get each week, the maximum is the total you can receive over your entire benefit year.

Holly Lascelles
•How long is a benefit year?
0 coins
Grace Patel
•One year from when you first filed your claim. Most people can collect for up to 26 weeks unless there are extensions available.

The benefit amount calculator on Washington ESD's website is your best bet for an estimate, but calling them is the only way to get definitive answers about your specific situation. Since that's basically impossible through normal channels, definitely consider using Claimyr if you need to actually speak with someone.
