How much do you get a week on unemployment in Washington state?

I'm thinking about filing for unemployment benefits but want to know what to expect for weekly payments. I was making about $52,000 a year at my last job before getting laid off. Does anyone know how Washington ESD calculates the weekly benefit amount? I've heard it's based on your earnings but not sure exactly how they figure it out.

Washington ESD uses your highest earning quarter from your base year to calculate your weekly benefit amount. The maximum weekly benefit for 2025 is $999 per week. They take your highest quarter earnings, divide by 26, then multiply by 0.0385 to get your weekly amount. But there's also a minimum of $295 per week.

Thanks for the breakdown! So if I made $13,000 in my highest quarter, that would be around $500 per week?

0 coins

Yes, that sounds about right. ($13,000 ÷ 26) × 0.0385 = roughly $483 per week.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks to ask about my benefit calculation. Their phone lines are always busy and I keep getting disconnected. Anyone else having trouble reaching them?

0 coins

Same problem here! I've been calling every morning at 8am sharp but still can't get through.

I actually found a service called Claimyr that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. They handle the calling for you - check out claimyr.com. There's even a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

Interesting, I'll look into that. Getting desperate to talk to someone about my claim status.

The weekly amount also depends on if you have any dependant allowances. You can get an extra $35 per week for each dependent child under 18. Makes a difference if you have kids!

0 coins

Good to know! I don't have kids but that's helpful info for others.

0 coins

Wait, is that $35 per kid or total? I have 3 children so want to make sure I'm getting the right amount.

0 coins

It's $35 per child, so you'd get an extra $105 per week with 3 kids.

Just remember that unemployment benefits are taxable income! You can choose to have taxes withheld or pay quarterly estimated taxes. I learned this the hard way last year when I owed a bunch at tax time.

0 coins

Ugh yes, wish someone had told me this earlier. Ended up owing like $2,000 in taxes.

0 coins

You can elect to have 10% federal taxes withheld when you file your weekly claims to avoid that surprise.

Been unemployed for 8 weeks now and still haven't gotten a single payment. My claim has been stuck in adjudication forever. This is ridiculous!!!

0 coins

Adjudication can take 4-6 weeks unfortunately. Have you checked if there are any pending issues in your account that need to be resolved?

0 coins

I've checked everything and there's nothing showing that needs my attention. Just says 'adjudication in progress' for weeks now.

0 coins

This is exactly why I used Claimyr - they got me connected to an adjudication specialist who explained what was holding up my claim. Worth every penny when you're not getting paid.

0 coins

One thing to note is that the weekly benefit amount is before any deductions. So if you elect to have taxes withheld, your actual payment will be less than the calculated weekly amount.

0 coins

That's a good point I hadn't considered. Better to plan for the net amount, not the gross.

0 coins

I was making $65K before layoff and I'm getting $743 per week. That formula seems pretty accurate for calculating the weekly amount.

0 coins

That sounds right. The formula works out to about 47% of your average weekly wages from your highest quarter.

0 coins

Good to see a real example! That gives me confidence in what to expect.

0 coins

Don't forget you also have to meet the job search requirements to keep getting benefits. Need to make 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log.

0 coins

Yes, and they do audit these! Make sure you're keeping detailed records of your job search activities.

0 coins

What counts as a valid job search contact? I've been applying online but not sure if that's enough.

0 coins

Online applications count, but you need employer name, date, position applied for, and method of contact. Also attending job fairs, networking events, etc.

0 coins

The maximum benefit duration is usually 26 weeks, but it can vary depending on the unemployment rate and if there are any federal extensions.

0 coins

Hopefully I won't need the full 26 weeks but good to know what the limit is.

0 coins

Right now it's the standard 26 weeks since we're not in a recession period with extended benefits.

0 coins

Also worth mentioning that if you work part-time while collecting unemployment, they'll reduce your weekly benefit by 75% of what you earn. So if you make $100 part-time, they'll deduct $75 from your weekly benefit.

0 coins

That's correct - they want to encourage people to work but still provide some support during the transition.

0 coins

I've been doing some gig work and wasn't sure how that affected my benefits. Thanks for clarifying!

If anyone is still having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask about their weekly benefit amount or claim status, I really recommend trying Claimyr. They saved me hours of calling and got me answers fast.

0 coins

I'm definitely going to try this. Been 2 months of trying to reach them on my own with no luck.

0 coins

How does Claimyr work exactly? Do they just call for you or do they provide other services too?

0 coins

They handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you directly to a Washington ESD agent when they get through. Check out the demo video to see how it works.

Just remember that your weekly benefit amount is based on earnings from 12-18 months ago, not your most recent job. So if you got a big raise recently, it might not be reflected in your unemployment calculation.

0 coins

Oh that's important to know! I did get a raise about 8 months ago so hopefully that will be included.

0 coins

They use your base year which is the first 4 quarters of the 5 quarters before you filed. So recent raises might not count depending on timing.

0 coins

Make sure to file your weekly claims every week even if your initial claim is still pending. You can't get paid for weeks you don't claim, even retroactively.

0 coins

This is super important! I know people who missed weeks and lost out on thousands of dollars.

0 coins

Good reminder. I'll make sure to file every week once I submit my initial claim.

0 coins

The Washington ESD website has a benefit calculator tool that can give you an estimate before you file. Might be worth checking out to get a rough idea.

0 coins

I tried using that calculator but it was confusing. Couldn't figure out which quarters to use for the calculation.

0 coins

You need your wage statements from the past 15 months to use the calculator properly. It's more accurate to just file and let them calculate it officially.

0 coins

One more thing - if you disagree with your weekly benefit amount calculation, you can appeal it. But you need to do it within 30 days of getting the determination letter.

0 coins

Good to know there's an appeal process if something seems wrong with the calculation.

0 coins

Appeals can take a while though. Better to make sure all your wage information is accurate when you first file.
