How much is unemployment benefit amount in Washington - what can I expect?
I'm about to file for unemployment for the first time and trying to figure out how much money I can expect to get each week. I was making about $52,000 a year at my last job before I got laid off. Does anyone know how Washington ESD calculates the weekly benefit amount? I've heard it's based on your previous earnings but I can't find clear info on their website about the actual dollar amounts.

Washington ESD uses your highest earning quarter from your base period to calculate your weekly benefit amount. Generally it's about 3.85% of your highest quarter earnings, but there's a minimum of $295 and maximum of $999 per week as of 2025. With your salary you'd probably get somewhere in the $400-500 range weekly.

•Thanks! That's actually more than I expected. Do you know if they count bonuses or just regular salary when calculating the base period?

•They count all wages reported to Washington ESD including bonuses, overtime, commissions - basically anything that shows up on your W-2 forms during your base period quarters.

•It usually takes about a week after you submit your initial claim for Washington ESD to calculate and approve your weekly benefit amount. You should get a determination letter explaining exactly how they calculated it.

•good to know, hopefully i hear something soon because i need to start budgeting

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for three days to ask about my benefit calculation because the amount seems wrong. Their phone system is absolutely terrible - either busy signal or it hangs up on you after being on hold forever.

•Have you tried using Claimyr? It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents automatically. I found it at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

The maximum weekly benefit amount in Washington is $999 but that's only if you were making really good money. Most people get somewhere between $300-600 depending on their work history. Also remember you can only collect for 26 weeks maximum unless there are extensions.

•Is the 26 weeks from when you first file or from when you actually start receiving payments? My claim is still being processed.

Amara Nnamani
•It's from your benefit year start date which is typically when you first filed your claim, not when payments actually begin. So if there are delays in processing, you could lose some weeks unfortunately.

•that doesn't seem fair if washington esd is the one causing the delays with processing claims

WASHINGTON ESD BENEFIT CALCULATOR IS BROKEN! I put in my info and it gave me three different amounts on three different days. How am I supposed to plan my finances when their own system can't give consistent numbers??

•The online calculator is just an estimate tool. Your actual benefit amount is determined by real humans at Washington ESD looking at your actual wage records. The calculator can be off because it doesn't have access to all your employment data.

•Well they need to fix it or remove it completely because it's misleading people who are already stressed about losing their jobs

Quick question - do unemployment benefits count as taxable income? Trying to figure out if I need to have taxes withheld or not.
0 coins
Jamal Wilson
•Yes, unemployment benefits are taxable income for both federal and Washington state purposes. You can choose to have 10% federal taxes withheld when you file your weekly claims, or you can pay quarterly estimated taxes.

Dylan Cooper
•Thanks, I'll probably have them withhold taxes to avoid a big bill next year

Zoe Papanikolaou
•Good point about taxes, I hadn't thought about that part yet

For anyone having trouble reaching Washington ESD about benefit amounts or calculations, I had success using Claimyr to get through to an actual agent. Way better than spending all day redialing their main number. The service connects you automatically when an agent becomes available.

•how much does something like that cost? i'm already tight on money

•It's worth checking out their website at claimyr.com - they focus on getting you the help you need rather than the cost being prohibitive. Much cheaper than missing work to sit on hold all day.

my sister got $480 a week when she filed last year but she was making about $60k. sounds like your amount should be pretty similar to hers

•That's helpful to know, gives me a ballpark idea of what to expect

•Keep in mind benefit amounts do get adjusted slightly each year based on average wages in Washington, so this year's amounts might be a bit different than last year.

•Same thing happened to me. Turned out they needed additional verification of my identity. Check your SecureAccess Washington account to see if there are any pending actions you need to complete.

•just checked and there's nothing pending. maybe i should try calling them

•Good luck with that. Like I mentioned before, I ended up using Claimyr to actually get through to someone instead of wasting days trying to call myself.

Been collecting unemployment for 6 weeks now and getting $445 per week. The amount has been consistent and deposits reliably every Tuesday as long as I file my weekly claim on time. Make sure you file by Sunday night each week or you could miss a payment.

Zoe Papanikolaou
•Good to know about the Sunday deadline. Do you have to do anything special for the weekly claims or just answer the questions online?
0 coins
Sofia Morales
•Just log into your Washington ESD account and answer the weekly questions honestly. Takes maybe 5 minutes. The key is being consistent about filing every single week even if you haven't found work yet.

•What happens if you forget to file one week? Can you make it up later?

Sofia Morales
•You can request to reopen a missed week but it's a hassle and not guaranteed. Better to just set a reminder on your phone to file every Sunday.

washington esd takes forever to process anything. i've been waiting 3 weeks just to find out my benefit amount

Liam Fitzgerald
•Three weeks is definitely longer than normal. There might be an issue with your claim that needs attention. I'd recommend getting in touch with them directly - that's where Claimyr really helped me cut through the phone maze.

•yeah maybe i should look into that claimyr thing you mentioned

•Also check if your claim went into adjudication. That can add weeks to the processing time if they need to verify employment details or eligibility.

The benefit amount calculation seems pretty straightforward once you understand it. They take your highest earning quarter from your base period and multiply by 0.0385. So if your highest quarter was $13,000, your weekly benefit would be around $500.
0 coins
Zoe Papanikolaou
•That formula is really helpful! I can probably calculate mine roughly based on my pay stubs.

StarSailor
•Just remember there are minimum and maximum limits, so very low earners get bumped up to $295 and high earners get capped at $999 per week.

Make sure you understand the difference between your weekly benefit amount and your maximum benefit amount. The weekly is what you get each week, but the maximum is the total you can receive during your entire benefit year (usually 26 weeks worth).
0 coins
Zoe Papanikolaou
•So if I get $450 per week, my maximum would be around $11,700 total?
0 coins
Dmitry Ivanov
•Exactly right. That's assuming you collect for the full 26 weeks and don't find work before then.

Dylan Cooper
•What happens to any unused benefits if you find a job after like 10 weeks?
0 coins
Dmitry Ivanov
•You lose the unused portion. Unemployment benefits don't roll over or get paid out as a lump sum when you find work.

been getting unemployment for a few months now and the amount has been stable. just make sure you're actively looking for work because they do check up on that requirement
0 coins
Zoe Papanikolaou
•How often do they check on job search activities? Do you have to submit proof every week?
0 coins
Ava Garcia
•You don't submit proof every week but you have to keep records and they can audit you at any time. I keep a simple log of where I applied and when.

finally got my benefit determination letter! $425 per week which is pretty close to what people predicted based on my salary. thanks everyone for the help figuring this out

•That's great news! How long did it end up taking from when you first filed?
0 coins
Mei Lin
•about 10 days total which wasn't too bad. the waiting was the worst part

•Glad it worked out! That amount sounds right for your income level.

One thing to remember is that your benefit amount is based on wages from about 3-15 months ago, not your most recent job. So if you got a big raise recently it won't be reflected in your unemployment benefits.

Zoe Papanikolaou
•That's a good point. I did get a promotion about 6 months ago so hopefully that's included in my base period.
0 coins
Miguel Silva
•It should be if the promotion was more than 3 months ago. Washington ESD uses a lag period to make sure all wages are properly reported by employers.

just remember that unemployment is temporary assistance while you look for work. the amount might seem low compared to your salary but it's meant to help with basic expenses not maintain your full lifestyle

•easy for you to say, some people have mortgages and families to support

•I understand it's difficult, I'm just explaining how the system is designed. That's why it's important to keep actively job searching.

The weekly benefit calculator on Washington ESD website gave me a rough estimate but my actual amount was about $30 higher than predicted. I think the calculator is conservative in its estimates.
0 coins
Zoe Papanikolaou
•That's encouraging! I'd rather have it be higher than expected than lower.

Connor O'Neill
•Definitely. The extra money every week makes a real difference when you're budgeting carefully.

For anyone still having trouble getting through to Washington ESD about benefit calculations, I can confirm that Claimyr service really works. Used it twice now and both times got connected to an agent within a reasonable time instead of the usual phone hell.
