How much money can you get from Washington ESD unemployment benefits?
I'm trying to figure out what I might qualify for if I file for unemployment in Washington. I was making about $52,000 a year at my last job before getting laid off two weeks ago. Does anyone know how Washington ESD calculates your weekly benefit amount? I've heard it's based on your earnings but I can't find clear info on their website about the actual dollar amounts you can receive.

Washington ESD uses your highest earning quarter from the past 18 months to calculate your weekly benefit. The maximum weekly benefit amount for 2025 is $999 per week, but most people get way less than that. Your amount depends on how much you earned during your base period.

•So it's not just based on my most recent salary? They look at a whole quarter?

•Right, they take your highest earning quarter and divide by 26 to get your weekly amount. So if you made $15,000 in your best quarter, you'd get about $577 per week.

i think the minimum is like $295 a week and max is $999 but dont quote me on that. you can use the calculator on their website to get an estimate

•I tried their calculator but it keeps giving me error messages. Maybe their site is down again.

•The Washington ESD website has been really glitchy lately. I had the same problem when I was trying to check my claim status last week.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD for benefit estimates, I actually found this service called Claimyr that helped me connect with an agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

•How much does that cost? I'm already broke from being unemployed.

•It's worth checking out their site for the details. For me it was way better than spending my whole day redialing Washington ESD and never getting through.

The formula is pretty straightforward - they take your gross wages from your highest earning quarter in your base period and multiply by 0.0385. Then they round down to the nearest dollar. So if you made $13,500 in your best quarter, that's $13,500 x 0.0385 = $519.75, rounded down to $519 per week.

•That's really helpful! So with my salary I'm probably looking at around $500-600 per week assuming my best quarter was around $13-15k.

•dont forget you have to pay taxes on unemployment benefits too, they dont automatically take it out

•Oh great, another thing to worry about. Can I have them withhold taxes or do I have to pay quarterly?

I've been on unemployment for 6 months and getting $643 a week. I was making about $58k before I got laid off. The amount has been consistent every week as long as I file my weekly claims on time and meet the job search requirements.

•How many job applications do you have to do per week? I heard it changed recently.

•It's 3 job search activities per week minimum. They can be applications, networking events, job interviews, etc. You have to log them in your WorkSource account.

BE CAREFUL because Washington ESD will screw you over if you make even tiny mistakes on your weekly claims!!! I accidentally put the wrong date for when I worked a temp job and they hit me with a $2,800 overpayment notice. Now I'm fighting it and can't get anyone on the phone to explain what happened.

•omg that's horrible, did you try appealing it?

Jake Sinclair
•Yeah I filed an appeal but that was 3 weeks ago and still haven't heard anything. The whole system is a nightmare.

•This is exactly why I used Claimyr - I needed to talk to someone about a similar issue and couldn't get through on my own. Sometimes you just need to actually speak with an agent to get things resolved.

also remember you can only collect for 26 weeks max unless there's some kind of extension program running. and you have to be actively looking for work the whole time

•26 weeks should be enough time to find something hopefully. The job market seems pretty good right now in Seattle.

One thing to keep in mind is that your base period matters a lot. Washington ESD looks at the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you file. So if you file in January 2025, they'd look at quarters ending in September, June, March, and December of the previous year.

•So if I had a really good bonus or overtime in a recent quarter, that could help my benefit amount?
0 coins
Demi Lagos
•Exactly! Any gross wages count including bonuses, overtime, commissions, etc. Just make sure it falls within your base period.

•what if you just started a new job recently and dont have much earnings in those quarters?

•How long did it take to get your first payment after you applied?

•took about 3 weeks because they had to verify my employment. make sure you have all your employer info ready when you file

Here's a quick reference for 2025 Washington ESD benefit amounts: Minimum weekly benefit is $295. Maximum is $999. You can collect for up to 26 weeks. You need to have earned at least $7,800 in your base period to qualify. The exact amount depends on your highest earning quarter.

The hardest part isn't figuring out how much you'll get, it's actually getting through to Washington ESD when you have questions or problems. I spent literally 6 hours one day trying to call them about my claim being stuck in adjudication.

•That's exactly why services like Claimyr exist. I know I mentioned it before but seriously, being able to actually talk to an agent without spending your entire day on hold is worth it.

•I might have to check that out. This calling situation is ridiculous.

dont forget about the waiting week too. first week after you file you dont get paid even if approved. its just how the system works

Saanvi Krishnaswami
•Wait, so even if I file today I won't get paid for the first week?
0 coins
Dananyl Lear
•right, the first week is a waiting week. so if you file this week you wont get paid until week 2 at the earliest

I'm getting $756 per week currently. Was making about $68k at my last job. The amount has been really helpful while I'm job searching. Just make sure you keep good records of all your job search activities because Washington ESD can audit you anytime.

Saanvi Krishnaswami
•Do they actually audit people often? That sounds stressful.

•Not super often but it happens. I know someone who got selected for audit and had to provide proof of every job application they made for 3 months.

The benefit amount is only part of it - you also have to think about how it affects your taxes. Unemployment benefits are taxable income at federal and state level. I learned that the hard way when I got a huge tax bill after being on unemployment for most of 2024.

Saanvi Krishnaswami
•Can you have them withhold taxes from each payment?
0 coins
Fidel Carson
•Yes, you can elect to have 10% federal tax withheld when you file your weekly claim. I wish I had done that from the beginning.

My advice is to apply as soon as you lose your job and don't wait. The sooner you file, the sooner you can start collecting. And if you run into issues with Washington ESD (which unfortunately happens a lot), don't be afraid to use resources like Claimyr to actually get through to an agent who can help you.
