How much can I get on Washington ESD unemployment benefits - weekly payment amounts?
I'm thinking about filing for unemployment and trying to figure out what I might qualify for. I was making about $52,000 a year at my last job before I got laid off two weeks ago. Does anyone know how Washington ESD calculates the weekly benefit amount? I've heard it's based on your previous earnings but I'm not sure exactly how they do the math. Also wondering if there's a maximum amount you can get per week in Washington state?

Washington ESD uses your highest quarter of earnings from your base period to calculate your weekly benefit amount. Generally it's about 3.85% of your highest quarter earnings. So if you made $13,000 in your best quarter, you'd get around $500 per week. The maximum weekly benefit amount for 2025 is $999.

•Thanks! That helps a lot. So they look at quarterly earnings, not annual salary?

Max Knight
•Exactly. They use the four quarters before you filed, called your base period. Your highest earning quarter determines your weekly amount.

i think the max is like $999 now but most people dont get that much. you have to have been making really good money to hit the max

•Yeah I probably won't hit the max but even half that would help with bills while I'm job searching.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check your potential benefit amount, I discovered this service called Claimyr that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Made the whole process way less frustrating than trying to call myself.

•Interesting, I'll check that out. The Washington ESD phone lines are always busy when I try to call.

•How much does that cost though? I'm already unemployed and trying to save money.

•I think it's worth it to avoid the headache of calling dozens of times. Plus you get actual answers instead of just guessing about your benefits.

The calculation is more complicated than people think. Washington ESD looks at your base period which is the first four of the last five completed quarters before you filed. Then they take your highest quarter and multiply by 0.0385. But you also have to meet minimum earnings requirements in your base period.

•What are the minimum requirements? I worked the whole year so I should be fine but just curious.

•You need at least $5,265 in your base period and earnings in at least two quarters. Plus your high quarter needs to be at least $1,755.

JUST A WARNING - dont count on getting benefits right away. My claim has been stuck in adjudication for over a month now and I still haven't seen a penny. The system is completely broken and they never answer their phones!!!

•Oh no, that's exactly what I'm worried about. Did you try that Claimyr thing someone mentioned?

•Not yet but I'm getting desperate. Might have to try anything at this point.

Don't let one bad experience scare you. Most claims process within 2-3 weeks if there are no issues. The key is making sure you file correctly and provide all required documentation upfront.

•What documentation do I need when I file?

•You'll need your Social Security number, employment history for the last 18 months, and reason for separation from your last job. Have pay stubs handy too.

•That's actually pretty close to what I'm hoping for. How long did it take for your claim to get approved?

•took about 3 weeks but that was before all the craziness. might be longer now

The whole system is designed to make it as hard as possible to get benefits. They hope you'll just give up and find another job before they have to pay you anything.

•I mean I am looking for work but I still paid into the system and deserve benefits if I qualify.

Max Knight
•That's exactly right. Unemployment insurance is something you've earned through your work history.

Make sure you file as soon as possible after your last day of work. There's a waiting week but the sooner you file, the sooner that week starts counting.

•Good point. I was laid off two weeks ago so I should probably file this week.

Seriously though, if you run into any problems with your claim or need to talk to someone at Washington ESD, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier really does work. I was skeptical at first but it saved me hours of calling and redialing busy signals.

•I used them too when my claim got stuck. Worth every penny to actually talk to a human being.

•Good to know there are options if I can't get through the normal way.

Don't forget you have to do job search activities while you're collecting benefits. They require 3 job search activities per week and you have to keep a log.

•What counts as a job search activity?

•Applying for jobs, networking events, career fairs, informational interviews. There's a list on the Washington ESD website.

The benefit amount calculator on the Washington ESD website is pretty accurate if you want to get an estimate before filing.

•I'll check that out, thanks for the tip!

my sister got denied because she quit her job instead of getting laid off. make sure you have a good reason for leaving or you might not qualify

Madeline Blaze
•I was laid off due to company downsizing so that should be fine.

Max Knight
•Being laid off through no fault of your own is the most straightforward reason for benefits. You should be good.

Also remember that unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld or pay them later when you file your return.

•Good reminder. I'll probably have them withhold taxes so I don't get hit with a big bill later.

The maximum benefit duration is 26 weeks in Washington, but that can be extended during high unemployment periods. Right now I think it's just the standard 26 weeks.

•Hopefully I'll find something before then but good to know there's a time limit.

if you worked in multiple states you might need to file in the state where you worked most recently or made the most money. can get complicated

•I've only worked in Washington so that shouldn't be an issue for me.

Pro tip: set up direct deposit when you file your claim. Paper checks take forever and sometimes get lost in the mail.

Madeline Blaze
•Definitely will do direct deposit. Need the money as fast as possible.

I had to use Claimyr when my benefits got cut off unexpectedly and I couldn't figure out why. Turned out there was an issue with my job search log that I didn't even know about. The agent they connected me with got it sorted out in like 10 minutes.

Bottom line - file as soon as you can, be honest about everything, and keep good records. The system works if you follow the rules, even though it can be frustrating to navigate.
