How much do people get for unemployment benefits in Washington state?
I'm trying to figure out what I might qualify for if I file for unemployment. I've been working full-time making about $52,000 a year for the past 3 years but my company just announced layoffs next month. Does anyone know how Washington ESD calculates the weekly benefit amount? I've heard it's based on your earnings but I can't find clear info on their website about the actual dollar amounts people typically receive.

Washington ESD uses your highest earning quarter from your base period to calculate benefits. Maximum weekly benefit is currently $999 but most people get way less than that. They take your highest quarter earnings, divide by 26, then you get about 60% of that amount as your weekly benefit.

•So if I made $13,000 in my highest quarter that would be $500 divided by 60%? That seems like around $300 a week?

•Yeah roughly in that ballpark. The exact formula is a bit more complex but $300-400 weekly sounds about right for your income level.

I just got approved last month and I'm getting $445 per week. I was making about $55k annually so sounds like we're in similar situations. The process took forever though - my claim was stuck in adjudication for like 5 weeks.

•5 weeks in adjudication?? That's crazy. Did you have to do anything special to get it moving or did it just eventually process?

•I tried calling Washington ESD probably 200 times but could never get through. Finally used this service called Claimyr that actually got me connected to a real person. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Never heard of that but might be worth looking into if I run into issues. Thanks!

The benefit calculation depends on your base period which is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you file. For 2025, minimum weekly benefit is $295 and maximum is $999. Most people fall somewhere between $350-600 depending on their work history.

•wait so if I just started this job 6 months ago but made good money at my previous job, which one counts for the calculation?

•Both jobs would count if they're within your base period. Washington ESD looks at all covered employment during those 4 quarters to determine your benefit amount.

DONT COUNT ON GETTING THE FULL AMOUNT. I was supposed to get $520 a week but they've been holding up my payments for 2 months over some stupid verification issue. The system is completely broken and they make it impossible to reach anyone who can actually help.

•That's awful! Have you tried the Claimyr service that someone mentioned above? I've heard they're really good at getting people through to Washington ESD agents when there are payment issues.

•Honestly at this point I'll try anything. This whole process has been a nightmare.

I'm getting $385 weekly and was earning about $48k before I got laid off. The amount seems fair but dealing with the weekly claims and job search requirements is such a pain. Make sure you understand all the rules before you file.

•What are the job search requirements like? I keep hearing different things about how many jobs you have to apply for each week.

•You need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep detailed records. They can audit your job search log at any time so don't mess around with that part.

•Tell me about it. I spent hours calling before I found out about phone services that can get you through faster. Sometimes you gotta work smarter not harder with government agencies.

•Services like Claimyr that handle the calling for you. Worth checking out if you're stuck in phone tree hell.

Update: I looked into this more and found the Washington ESD benefit calculator online. Based on my earnings it looks like I'd qualify for around $420 per week if I get laid off. That's actually higher than I expected!

•That sounds about right for your income level. Just remember you'll need to file your claim as soon as possible after your last day of work to avoid any delays in processing.

•And seriously, if you run into any issues with adjudication or getting your payments, don't waste time trying to call Washington ESD directly. Use Claimyr or similar services to actually reach a human being who can help.

My sister just started getting benefits and she's receiving $367 weekly. She was working part-time though so that might be why it's lower. The whole system seems pretty complicated tbh

•Part-time work definitely affects the calculation since it's based on your total earnings during the base period quarters.

For anyone reading this thread later - Washington ESD also has a dependency allowance that can add extra money to your weekly benefit if you have qualifying dependents. It's not much but every bit helps when you're unemployed.

•Good to know! I don't have kids but that could help other people in similar situations.

•how much extra do you get for dependents?

•I think it's around $25-30 per dependent per week, up to a maximum of 5 dependents. You have to provide documentation to qualify though.

UPDATE: Finally got my payment issues resolved! Turns out there was a simple form I needed to submit but nobody told me about it. If anyone else is having payment delays, definitely try to get through to an actual Washington ESD agent who can look at your specific case.

•Glad you got it sorted out! Did you end up using one of those calling services or manage to get through the regular way?

•I used the Claimyr thing after seeing it mentioned here. Worked way better than I expected - got connected within like 10 minutes instead of spending hours getting busy signals.

Just want to add that the benefit amount also depends on whether you're on regular UI or if you qualify for any extended benefits. Most people start with regular unemployment which lasts up to 26 weeks in Washington state.

•26 weeks should hopefully be enough time to find something new. Thanks for all the info everyone - this thread has been super helpful!

One more thing to keep in mind - your benefit amount is taxable income so you might want to have taxes withheld or set aside money for tax season. Washington ESD gives you the option to have federal taxes taken out automatically.

•Oh wow I didn't even think about taxes. That's a good point to remember.

•Yes, unemployment benefits are fully taxable at the federal level. You can elect to have 10% withheld when you file your initial claim or change it later through your online account.
