How much unemployment can you get from Washington ESD - need to know benefit amounts
I'm trying to figure out how much unemployment benefits I might qualify for through Washington ESD. I've been working full-time making about $58,000 a year for the past 3 years but my company just announced layoffs next month. I know unemployment is based on your wages but I can't find clear info on exactly how much I'd get weekly. Does anyone know the current maximum benefit amount for 2025? Also wondering if there are any other factors that affect how much you receive besides just your salary.

Washington ESD calculates your weekly benefit amount based on your highest earning quarter from the past 18 months. For 2025, the maximum weekly benefit is $999. They take your highest quarter wages, divide by 26, then you get about 60-65% of that amount. With your salary, you'd probably qualify for close to the maximum since $58k annually puts you in the higher range.

•That's way more than I expected! So if I made around $15,000 in my highest quarter, I'd get roughly $350-400 per week?

•Actually closer to $575-600 weekly with those numbers. The formula is more generous than most people think.

Don't forget you can collect for up to 26 weeks in Washington, so that's substantial income replacement. Just make sure you file your weekly claims on time and meet the job search requirements.

•Good point about the job search stuff. How many applications do they require per week now?

•It's 3 job contacts per week, but they can be applications, networking, interviews, etc. Just keep good records in WorkSourceWA.

I went through this last year when I got laid off. With a similar salary to yours, I ended up getting $580 per week. The hardest part wasn't figuring out the benefit amount - it was actually getting through to Washington ESD when I had questions about my claim. Their phone lines are absolutely swamped and I spent weeks trying to reach someone when my claim went into adjudication.

•Oh no, that sounds awful. Did you eventually get it resolved?

•Yeah but only after I found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to ESD agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that explains how it works. Saved me so much frustration.

The benefit calculation also depends on when you worked those jobs. Washington ESD looks at your base year which is the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you file. If you had any gaps in employment or lower wages in certain quarters, that could affect your benefit amount even with a good current salary.

•I've been pretty steady with this employer for 3 years, so hopefully that won't be an issue for me.

•You should be fine then. Steady employment history usually results in higher benefit amounts.

•Washington has one of the higher maximum benefits in the country. It gets adjusted annually based on the state's average wages.

•Yeah but remember you pay taxes on unemployment benefits too, so it's not like getting $999 cash in hand.

I'm so stressed about this whole unemployment thing. My company hasn't officially announced layoffs yet but everyone knows it's coming. How long does it take to get your first payment after you file? I need to know for budgeting purposes.

•If everything goes smoothly, about 2-3 weeks from when you file. But if your claim needs adjudication for any reason, it can take much longer.

•What would cause adjudication? I'm worried I'll mess something up on the application.

•Common reasons include voluntary quit vs layoff questions, availability issues, or if they need to verify your wages with employers. Just be honest and thorough when filling out your application.

Does anyone know if the benefit amount changes if you find part-time work while collecting? I might be able to pick up some freelance stuff but don't want to mess up my benefits.

•You can work part-time and still collect, but your benefits get reduced based on how much you earn. Washington ESD has a formula where they subtract your earnings from your weekly benefit amount after allowing for a small earnings disregard.

•Thanks, I'll look into the exact rules on their website. Don't want to accidentally create an overpayment situation.

The whole system is so confusing honestly. I tried calling Washington ESD like 50 times last month when I had questions about my benefit calculation and could never get through. Finally gave up and just hoped for the best.

•That's exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier - they specialize in helping people connect with ESD agents when the normal phone lines are jammed. Worth checking out if you need to speak with someone.

•I'll definitely look into that if I run into problems. The phone situation is ridiculous.

For what it's worth, I calculated my potential benefits using an online calculator and it was pretty accurate compared to what I actually received. Just search for 'Washington unemployment calculator' and you can get a rough estimate.

•Good idea, I'll try that to get a better sense of what to expect.

•Just remember the calculators are estimates. Your actual amount might vary slightly based on the exact quarters they use for calculation.

Don't forget about the waiting week! Washington ESD requires a one-week waiting period before you can start receiving benefits, so factor that into your financial planning.

AstroExplorer
•Oh I didn't know about the waiting week. So even if approved immediately, there's still a delay?

Yara Abboud
•Exactly. You file for that first week but don't get paid for it. It's just how the system works.

I got laid off 6 months ago and have been collecting the full $999 weekly max. It's been a lifesaver honestly, gave me time to be picky about my next job instead of taking the first thing available.

•That's encouraging to hear! Did you have any issues with the job search requirements while being selective?

PixelPioneer
•Not really, as long as you're applying to legitimate positions and documenting everything properly. The 3 contacts per week requirement isn't too hard to meet.

Make sure you understand the difference between gross and net benefit amounts too. The $999 max is gross - you'll pay federal and state taxes on it if you choose to have them withheld.
0 coins
AstroExplorer
•Can you choose whether to have taxes taken out or not?
0 coins
Keisha Williams
•Yes, it's optional during the application process. You can choose 10% federal withholding and/or state taxes. Many people opt for withholding to avoid a big tax bill later.

THE WASHINGTON ESD SYSTEM IS SO BROKEN! I've been waiting 8 weeks for my adjudication to complete and still no answers. How are people supposed to survive on nothing while they take forever to make decisions??

•I totally understand your frustration. That's exactly the situation where Claimyr really helps - they can get you connected to an actual ESD agent who can check on your adjudication status and hopefully move things along.

•At this point I'm willing to try anything. I'll check out that service you mentioned.

One thing to consider is that if you're getting severance pay, it might affect when your unemployment benefits can start. Washington ESD treats severance differently depending on how it's structured.
0 coins
AstroExplorer
•I think I'm getting 2 weeks severance. Will that delay my benefits?
0 coins
Amina Sy
•Possibly, depends on whether it's paid as salary continuation or lump sum. You'll need to report it when you file and they'll tell you how it affects your claim timing.

just want to say this thread has been super helpful! i had no idea washington unemployment paid so much compared to other places. makes me feel a bit better about the upcoming layoffs at my company.

Has anyone dealt with unemployment benefits while also having 401k or investment income? Wondering if that affects your eligibility or benefit amount.
0 coins
Sofia Perez
•Investment income and retirement withdrawals don't count as wages for unemployment purposes, so they shouldn't affect your weekly benefit amount. But definitely report everything honestly when you file.

Natasha Ivanova
•Good to know, thanks. I was worried I'd have to choose between accessing my retirement funds and getting unemployment.

The benefit amount also stays the same for your entire claim year, so even if you find higher paying work later and get laid off again within that year, you'd still get the same weekly amount based on your original calculation.
0 coins
AstroExplorer
•Interesting, I didn't realize it was locked in for a full year.
0 coins
NebulaNomad
•Yeah, it's based on your wages from when you first established the claim. The benefit year runs for 52 weeks from when you first file.

Bottom line - with your salary level you'll probably get a decent weekly amount, but the real challenge is navigating the system itself. File as soon as you're eligible and keep detailed records of everything. And if you run into problems reaching ESD, those services like Claimyr that help with phone connections seem to be really popular lately.
