How much do you get unemployment from Washington ESD - what's the weekly benefit amount?

I'm trying to figure out how much I'll get if I file for unemployment with Washington ESD. I was making about $52,000 a year at my last job before getting laid off. Does anyone know how they calculate the weekly benefit amount? I've heard different things from people but want to know the actual formula they use.

Washington ESD calculates your weekly benefit amount based on your highest earning quarter in your base period. They take that amount, divide by 26, then you get about 60% of that. So if your highest quarter was $13,000, you'd divide by 26 to get $500, then 60% would be $300 per week. But there's a maximum weekly benefit amount that changes each year.

Thanks! That makes sense. Do you know what the maximum is for 2025?

0 coins

I think it's around $999 per week for 2025 but you should check the Washington ESD website to confirm the exact amount.

you can also use the benefit calculator on the washington esd website, it's pretty accurate. just need your quarterly wages from the last 18 months or so

0 coins

Oh that's helpful, I'll look for that calculator. Thanks!

One thing to keep in mind is that your base period matters a lot. Washington ESD uses the first four of the last five completed quarters before you file. So if you file in January 2025, they'd look at your wages from October 2023 through September 2024. If you had a recent pay increase, it might not be reflected in your benefit amount.

That's really good to know. I did get a raise last summer so hopefully that's included in the calculation.

0 coins

Yeah the timing can really screw you over sometimes. I got laid off right after getting promoted and my benefits were based on my old salary.

I was having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask about my benefit calculation and someone told me about this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com. They help you get through to actual agents instead of waiting on hold forever. There's even a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Might be worth checking out if you need to talk to someone about your specific situation.

Interesting, I've never heard of that. Does it actually work?

0 coins

Yeah it worked for me. I was able to get clarification on my benefit amount calculation without spending hours on hold.

Also remember that unemployment benefits are taxable income in Washington state. You can choose to have taxes withheld from your weekly payments or pay them when you file your tax return.

0 coins

Good point, I hadn't thought about the tax implications.

0 coins

Yeah definitely have them withhold taxes if you can afford the slightly lower payment. Otherwise you'll owe a bunch at tax time.

0 coins

The whole system is confusing honestly. I thought I'd get way more than I actually did. Turns out I had some quarters with lower wages that brought down my average.

0 coins

That's why looking at your actual quarterly wages is so important. A lot of people just estimate based on their current salary.

0 coins

Yeah I wish I had checked before I got laid off. Would have helped me plan better.

0 coins

don't forget you also have to meet the minimum earnings requirement to qualify. i think it's like $5,000 total in your base period or something like that

0 coins

Oh wow, I definitely meet that but good to know there's a minimum.

Another factor people don't always realize is that if you work part-time while collecting benefits, they'll reduce your weekly amount. In Washington, you can earn up to your weekly benefit amount plus $5 before they start reducing your benefits. So if your weekly benefit is $400, you can earn up to $405 without any reduction.

0 coins

That's actually really helpful information. I might try to pick up some freelance work.

0 coins

Just make sure you report any earnings when you file your weekly claim. They're pretty strict about that.

I remember when I first filed, I was shocked at how much paperwork there was. The benefit amount calculation was just the beginning. Then you have to do job searches every week and all that.

0 coins

Yeah I'm trying to prepare myself for all the requirements. It seems pretty overwhelming.

0 coins

It's not too bad once you get into a routine. The job search requirements are actually pretty reasonable.

0 coins

One more thing - if you disagree with your benefit amount calculation, you can appeal it. I had to do that once because they missed some of my wages and I was able to get it corrected.

0 coins

Good to know there's an appeals process if something goes wrong.

0 coins

Yeah just keep all your pay stubs and documentation. Makes the appeal process much easier.

WASHINGTON ESD IS SO SLOW WITH EVERYTHING! I've been waiting 3 weeks just to get my benefit amount determined. Their whole system is a mess.

0 coins

That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr. Got tired of waiting and not being able to get through to anyone.

0 coins

Maybe I should try that. This is ridiculous.

0 coins

For what it's worth, I used the online benefit calculator and it was pretty accurate. My actual benefit amount was within $10 of what it predicted.

0 coins

That's reassuring. I'll definitely use the calculator before I file.

0 coins

just remember that benefits only last 26 weeks in washington unless there's some special extension program going on

0 coins

26 weeks should hopefully be enough time to find something new.

0 coins

yeah hopefully. job market seems pretty decent right now compared to a few years ago

0 coins

Make sure you apply as soon as possible after losing your job. There's a waiting week but you want to get the process started. I waited too long and it delayed everything.

0 coins

Good advice. I'm planning to file this week since I just got laid off on Friday.

0 coins

Perfect timing then. Don't wait any longer than you have to.

0 coins

The benefit amount also depends on whether you're eligible for dependents allowance if you have kids. It's not much but every bit helps.

0 coins

I don't have kids but that's good information for others reading this.

0 coins

honestly the whole unemployment system could be so much simpler. why do they make it so complicated to figure out how much you'll get?

0 coins

I think it's because they have to account for so many different work situations and wage patterns. But yeah, it could definitely be more user-friendly.

0 coins

One last tip - when you do get your benefit determination letter, read it carefully. It breaks down exactly how they calculated your amount and what quarters they used. If something looks wrong, that's when you'd want to appeal.

0 coins

Thanks for all the helpful advice everyone. I feel much more prepared now.

0 coins

No problem! The whole process is stressful enough without going in blind.

0 coins

Good luck with your claim! The initial setup is the hardest part. Once you get into the weekly routine it's pretty straightforward.

0 coins

Thank you! I appreciate everyone taking the time to help explain everything.

0 coins

Yeah this thread was really helpful. I'm in a similar situation and learned a lot reading through all these responses.

0 coins

Glad it helped you too! That's what these forums are for.

0 coins

Definitely. Way better than trying to navigate the Washington ESD website alone.
