How much is unemployment benefits in Washington - confused about my payment amount

I just got approved for unemployment after being laid off from my warehouse job and I'm confused about how much I should be getting. My weekly benefit amount shows $350 but I thought unemployment was supposed to replace most of your income? I was making about $18/hour full time before I got laid off. Is this the right amount or did Washington ESD make a mistake? I can't get through to anyone on the phone to ask.

Washington unemployment benefits are calculated based on your highest earning quarter in your base period, not your most recent wages. The maximum weekly benefit amount in Washington is currently $999 but most people get way less than that. $350 sounds about right for your wage level.

That makes sense I guess. I was hoping it would be more though since rent alone is $1200/month.

0 coins

yeah the amounts are pretty low compared to cost of living here, especially in seattle area

0 coins

Your weekly benefit amount is roughly 3.85% of your total wages in your highest quarter during your base period. So if you made $9,100 in your best quarter, you'd get about $350/week. The calculation looks at the four quarters before you filed, not including the quarter you're currently in.

0 coins

OK that math actually checks out. My best quarter was probably around $9,000 so $350 makes sense now.

0 coins

Wait I'm confused - is it 3.85% or is there a different formula? My amount doesn't match that calculation at all.

0 coins

It's actually more complex than that - there are different calculations for high quarter vs. total base period wages, and they use whichever gives you the higher amount. Plus there's a minimum of $295/week.

I had the same confusion when I first filed. If you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD about your benefit calculation, I found this service called Claimyr that actually gets you through to a real person. They have a website at claimyr.com and even a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call.

0 coins

Never heard of that but I'll check it out. Getting through to Washington ESD is impossible right now.

0 coins

Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true if they can actually get you through to ESD.

0 coins

Yeah it's real, they basically call for you and connect you when they get through. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

washington unemployment is a joke honestly. they take forever to process claims and the amounts barely cover basic expenses. i've been waiting 6 weeks just to get my first payment

0 coins

Are you stuck in adjudication? That's usually why payments take so long.

0 coins

no idea what that means but my claim just says pending for weeks now

0 coins

Adjudication means they're reviewing something about your claim. You should check if there are any issues listed in your account that need attention.

0 coins

The amount depends on a lot of factors. I was making $25/hour and only get $425/week because I had some part-time work mixed in during my base period. It's not just about your final job.

0 coins

That's frustrating. They really should explain this better when you file.

0 coins

Did you try to get them to recalculate based on higher wages? I heard you can appeal the amount.

0 coins

You can also check your monetary determination letter which should explain exactly how they calculated your benefit amount. It breaks down your wages by quarter and shows the math.

0 coins

Where do I find that letter? I don't remember getting one.

0 coins

It should be in your Washington ESD account under correspondence. If not there, it might have been mailed to you.

0 coins

I never got mine either and had to call to get it resent. Another reason why having a way to actually reach them is important.

0 coins

Don't forget you have to file your weekly claims every week to actually get paid. The $350 is only if you certify that you're looking for work and available.

0 coins

Yeah I've been doing that every Sunday. Still figuring out the job search requirements though.

0 coins

You need 3 job search activities per week minimum. Keep good records because they do audit people.

0 coins

I tried that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier and it actually worked! Got connected to Washington ESD in like 20 minutes instead of calling all day. They explained my benefit calculation and I found out I was actually entitled to more money.

0 coins

Really? How much more were you supposed to get?

0 coins

Turned out they missed some of my wages from a second job. Went from $280/week to $380/week after they corrected it.

0 coins

OK that's pretty convincing. I might have to try that service too.

0 coins

The maximum benefit duration is also important to know. In Washington you can get up to 26 weeks of regular unemployment, so budget accordingly.

0 coins

26 weeks should be enough time to find something new hopefully.

0 coins

Depends on your field. Some industries are hiring fast but others are still slow.

0 coins

Make sure you're also looking into WorkSource services. They have job training programs that might help you get a better paying job when your benefits run out.

0 coins

Good point. I should probably register with them anyway for the job search requirement.

0 coins

Yeah WorkSource registration counts as one of your weekly job search activities too.

0 coins

Just wanted to add that if you work part-time while on unemployment, they'll reduce your benefits but you can still collect something as long as you earn less than 1.5 times your weekly benefit amount.

0 coins

That's good to know. So I could do some gig work without losing everything?

0 coins

Exactly, just make sure to report all earnings when you file your weekly claim or you could get in trouble for overpayment.

0 coins

The overpayment penalties are no joke. They make you pay back everything plus interest.

0 coins

Bottom line is $350/week sounds right for your situation. It's not great but it's what the system calculates based on your work history. Focus on finding new work as soon as possible.

0 coins

Yeah you're right. Thanks everyone for explaining how this all works. Really helpful.

0 coins

Good luck with the job search! The warehouse industry seems to be picking up again.

0 coins

One more tip - set up direct deposit if you haven't already. Getting paper checks takes forever and they get lost in the mail sometimes.

0 coins

Already did that thankfully. My first payment should hit my account this week.

0 coins

Smart move. I waited 3 extra weeks for my first check because it got sent to the wrong address.

0 coins

Has anyone had luck appealing their benefit amount? Mine seems way too low based on what I was making.

0 coins

You can appeal if you think they made an error in calculating your wages. You'd need to provide pay stubs or tax documents to prove higher earnings.

0 coins

I appealed mine and won. They had missed wages from a job that reported late to the state. Got an extra $150/week retroactively.

0 coins

For anyone still having trouble reaching Washington ESD, I second the Claimyr recommendation. Used it twice now and both times got through quickly. Worth checking out their demo video to see how it works.

0 coins

I'm definitely going to try that if I need to call them again. Thanks for the tip.

Wish I had known about that months ago when I was calling hundreds of times trying to fix my claim.
