How much do you get from Washington ESD unemployment benefits - confused about payment amounts

I just got approved for unemployment after being laid off from my warehouse job and I'm really confused about how much I'm supposed to get. My weekly benefit amount shows $847 but I only received $635 this week. Is this normal? I made about $52,000 last year working full time. Also saw something about a waiting week but not sure if that applies to me since I filed in January 2025. Can someone explain how Washington ESD calculates these payments?

The $847 is your gross weekly benefit amount, but Washington ESD takes out federal taxes (10%) and state taxes (varies) unless you opt out. That's probably why you got $635. You can change your tax withholding in your SecureAccess Washington account under benefit payment options.

Oh that makes sense! I didn't realize they automatically take taxes out. Should I keep it that way or opt out?

I'd keep the withholding honestly. You'll owe it at tax time anyway and it's easier to have it taken out automatically rather than getting hit with a big bill later.

Your weekly benefit amount is calculated based on your highest earning quarter from your base period. With $52k annually you're probably getting close to the maximum. Washington's max weekly benefit is $999 in 2025 so $847 sounds about right for your income level.

What's a base period? I keep seeing that term but don't understand what it means.

0 coins

Base period is the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you filed. So if you filed in January 2025, it would be Oct 2023 through Sept 2024. Washington ESD uses your wages from those quarters to calculate your benefit amount.

That base period thing screwed me over because I had a gap in employment. Make sure all your employers reported your wages correctly or you might get less than you should.

There's no waiting week in Washington anymore, they eliminated it a few years ago. You should get paid for your first eligible week. If you're missing a payment it might be for a different reason - check if there are any issues listed in your account that need to be resolved.

Good to know about the waiting week! My account doesn't show any issues so I think it's just the tax thing the other person mentioned.

0 coins

Yeah Washington got rid of the waiting week during COVID and kept it that way. Some states still have it but not us thankfully.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks about my benefit calculation because something seems off with mine too. Their phone lines are impossible - I've called hundreds of times and either get busy signals or get disconnected after waiting for hours. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to someone there?

OMG yes the phone situation is ridiculous! I found this service called Claimyr that basically calls for you and connects you when they get through. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked - got connected to an agent in like 20 minutes instead of spending all day calling. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

I tried calling at exactly 8am when they open and got through after about 45 minutes. Trick is to keep redialing the second you get a busy signal.

Your benefit amount also depends on how many dependents you claim. If you have kids under 18 you can get additional money per child. I get an extra $25 per week for each of my two kids on top of my regular benefit amount.

0 coins

I don't have kids so that doesn't apply to me, but good to know for others!

Make sure you're reporting any part-time work correctly. If you work and earn money while collecting UI, they reduce your benefit dollar for dollar after you earn more than your weekly benefit amount divided by 4. So with $847 weekly benefit, you can earn up to about $211 without any reduction.

0 coins

I'm not working right now but that's helpful for when I start looking for part-time work. So anything under that amount doesn't affect my benefits at all?

0 coins

Exactly! It's called the earnings disregard. You can earn up to 25% of your weekly benefit amount without any reduction. Anything above that reduces your benefit payment but you can still receive partial benefits.

been on unemployment 3 times and the payment calculation never makes sense to me lol. they use some weird formula with quarters and wages and honestly i just trust whatever they give me. as long as the money shows up in my account im good

0 coins

Lol same here! The math is too confusing so I just roll with whatever Washington ESD decides to pay me.

Washington also has some of the highest unemployment benefits in the country. $847 weekly is really good compared to other states. My cousin in Florida only gets like $275 per week maximum. We're lucky to live here for unemployment benefits.

0 coins

Wow I had no idea other states paid so little! Makes me appreciate Washington's system more.

0 coins

Yeah but our cost of living is also way higher so it evens out. $847 doesn't go as far here as $275 might in Florida.

You can see exactly how they calculated your benefit amount in your Washington ESD account. Look for the monetary determination letter - it breaks down all your quarterly wages and shows the math they used. That way you can verify everything is correct.

0 coins

I'll look for that! I want to make sure they have all my wages reported correctly.

Quick question - do you lose benefits if you turn down a job offer? I'm worried about the job search requirements and what happens if I get offered something that pays way less than my previous job.

0 coins

You can turn down jobs that pay significantly less than your previous wage (usually 75% or less) during your first few weeks of benefits. After that the threshold gets lower. But this is getting off topic from the original payment amount question.

0 coins

Sorry, you're right! Got carried away with my own worries about job searching.

I had issues with my payment amounts too and it turned out one of my previous employers never reported my wages correctly to Washington ESD. Took forever to get it fixed but my weekly benefit went up by $150 once they corrected it. Definitely worth checking if your calculation seems low.

0 coins

How did you get that fixed? Did you have to provide pay stubs or something?

0 coins

Yeah I had to send in my pay stubs and tax forms. Took about 6 weeks for them to review and adjust my claim but they paid me the difference retroactively.

Just want to add that your benefit year lasts 52 weeks from when you first filed, and you can collect up to 26 weeks of benefits during that year (or up to your maximum benefit amount, whichever comes first). So at $847 per week, your maximum would be around $22,000 total.

0 coins

Good to know there's a yearly limit. Hopefully I'll find work before I hit that max!

Has anyone used that Claimyr service mentioned earlier? I'm having a different issue with my benefits and really need to talk to someone at Washington ESD but the phone situation is impossible. Wondering if it's legit or a scam.

0 coins

I used it last month when I was having adjudication issues. It's legit - they actually got me connected to an agent who was able to explain what was holding up my claim. Way better than spending entire days trying to call myself.

The tax withholding thing caught me off guard too when I first started collecting. You can also choose to have no taxes taken out and just pay quarterly estimated taxes if you prefer. Some people like having the full amount each week and handling taxes themselves.

I think I'll stick with having them take taxes out automatically. Less to worry about come tax time.
