How much do you make with unemployment benefits in Washington?
I'm thinking about filing for unemployment but want to know what to expect payment-wise. I was making $52,000 a year at my last job (about $1000/week). Does anyone know how Washington ESD calculates weekly benefit amounts? I've heard it's around 50% of your wages but not sure if that's accurate. Also wondering if there's a maximum weekly amount they'll pay regardless of what you were earning?

Washington ESD uses your highest quarter of earnings from your base year to calculate benefits. The weekly benefit amount is roughly 3.85% of that quarter's wages, but there's a minimum of $295 and maximum of $999 per week as of 2025. So if you were making $1000/week consistently, you'd probably get close to the maximum.

•Thanks! So it's not exactly 50% then. That actually sounds better than I expected.

•yeah but dont forget you have to pay taxes on unemployment benefits too, so factor that in

I was making about the same and got $847 per week from Washington ESD. The calculation is weird though - they look at your earnings from like 15 months ago, not your most recent job. Really caught me off guard when I filed my claim.

•Wait, 15 months ago? That doesn't make sense for me because I was making way less back then.

•It's based on your base year which ends about 6 months before you file, not 15 months. The base year uses the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters when you file your initial claim.

•Oh okay that makes more sense. I was really confused about the timeline.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check your benefit estimate, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me actually reach an agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Really saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

•How much does that cost? Seems like something that should be free.

•I thought the same thing initially, but honestly the time it saved me was worth it. Took me 3 days of calling Washington ESD before I found Claimyr, then got through the same day.

JUST A WARNING - don't count on getting the maximum amount even if you think you qualify. Washington ESD has been really strict about job search requirements and they'll cut your benefits if you don't meet them exactly. Make sure you understand what you need to do BEFORE you start collecting.

•What are the job search requirements? I heard you have to apply to 3 jobs per week?

Isabella Oliveira
•It's actually 3 job search activities per week, not just applications. Can include networking events, job fairs, interviews, etc. But you have to document everything in WorkSourceWA.

i got like $400 a week but i was only working part time before so that makes sense i guess

Oliver Becker
•That's still pretty good for part-time work!

Also keep in mind that if you have any severance pay or vacation payout, that might affect when your benefits start. Washington ESD considers that as wages even though you're not working anymore.

Oliver Becker
•I did get 2 weeks severance. Does that mean I have to wait 2 weeks before I can collect unemployment?
0 coins
Natasha Petrova
•Not necessarily wait, but those weeks might be considered 'not payable' because of the severance. You should still file your weekly claims though to keep your claim active.

Been on unemployment for 8 weeks now and it's honestly not enough to live on even at $750/week. My mortgage alone is $2800/month. Really hoping to find something soon.

•thats rough man. have you looked into any temporary assistance programs?

•Yeah I'm checking into some local food banks and stuff. Never thought I'd be in this situation.

•Sorry to hear that. Makes me realize I need to be more aggressive about job searching.

The whole system is set up to give you just enough to survive but not enough to be comfortable. It's supposed to motivate you to find work quickly I guess.

Isabella Oliveira
•That's exactly right. It's meant to be temporary assistance, not a replacement for working.

One thing I learned is that you can work part-time while collecting unemployment, but they reduce your benefits based on what you earn. Might be worth looking for some temporary or gig work to supplement the UI payments.

•How does that calculation work? Do they take away dollar for dollar?
0 coins
LunarLegend
•No, there's a formula. I think you can earn up to your weekly benefit amount before they start reducing it significantly. But definitely report ALL earnings or you'll get in trouble for overpayment.

Make sure you set up direct deposit if you get approved. Getting those paper checks in the mail was taking forever and I needed the money ASAP.

•Good tip! I'll make sure to do that when I file.

I tried calling Washington ESD for weeks to get my benefit amount clarified because the online calculator seemed wrong. Finally used that Claimyr service someone mentioned and got through immediately. The agent explained that my calculation was based on quarters where I had a different job, which I didn't realize.

•So that service actually works? I was skeptical.

•Yeah it really does. I was spending 2-3 hours a day trying to call Washington ESD and getting nowhere. Claimyr got me through in like 20 minutes.

also dont forget about the waiting week. theres no waiting week anymore in washington but some people still think there is

Oliver Becker
•What's a waiting week?
0 coins
Natasha Petrova
•It used to be that your first week of unemployment wasn't payable - kind of like a deductible. But Washington eliminated that a few years ago, so you get paid for your first week now if you're eligible.

The maximum is $999 but that's before taxes. I'm getting the max and after federal and state taxes it's more like $750 take-home. Still better than nothing but just so you know.

Oliver Becker
•Can you choose to have taxes taken out automatically or do you have to pay quarterly?
0 coins
CosmicCrusader
•You can elect to have 10% federal tax withheld when you file your weekly claims. I'd recommend it unless you want a big tax bill next year.

IMPORTANT: Make sure you file your weekly claims every single week even if there are issues with your account. If you miss filing for a week, you lose that week's benefits permanently. Found this out the hard way.

•Even if your claim is still under adjudication?
0 coins
Isabella Oliveira
•YES. Even if it's pending adjudication, under review, or any other status. You must file every week to maintain your claim.

•Seriously try Claimyr. I know I keep mentioning it but it really works for getting through to Washington ESD when you can't reach them normally. Saved me so much frustration.

my friend told me unemployment is like 60% of your wages but sounds like its more complicated than that
0 coins
Natasha Petrova
•It varies by state. Washington's formula is different from most other states. Some states do use a percentage of your wages, but Washington uses that 3.85% of your highest quarter calculation.

Don't forget that unemployment benefits count as income for things like food stamps and other assistance programs. Might affect your eligibility for other help if you're getting close to income limits.

Oliver Becker
•Good point, I didn't think about that.

The hardest part for me was understanding the base year thing. I kept thinking they'd use my most recent wages but they use wages from over a year ago in some cases. Really screwed up my budgeting at first.
0 coins
Oliver Becker
•Yeah that seems like a weird system. Why not just use recent wages?
0 coins
Natasha Petrova
•It's because they need complete quarters of data to calculate benefits accurately. Using partial or incomplete wage data would make the system too complicated and prone to errors.

Just remember that if you get disqualified for any reason, you can appeal. I got disqualified initially because they said I quit my job voluntarily, but I appealed and won because I had documentation that I was laid off.
0 coins
Oliver Becker
•How long does the appeal process take?
0 coins
Anastasia Kozlov
•Mine took about 6 weeks total, but I got back-paid for all the weeks I missed once I won the appeal.

Bottom line - file as soon as you're eligible and don't expect to get rich off unemployment. It's meant to help you get by while job searching, not replace your full income.

•Thanks everyone for all the info. This has been really helpful in understanding what to expect.
