How many months of work to qualify for unemployment in Washington ESD?
I'm trying to figure out if I qualify for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD. I've been working part-time for about 8 months at a retail job, but before that I had a gap where I wasn't working for like 6 months. Does anyone know exactly how many months of work you need to qualify? I'm worried I might not have enough work history. My hours have been pretty inconsistent too - some weeks 25 hours, some weeks only 15. Really stressed about this and not sure if I should even bother applying.

It's not really about months of work - Washington ESD looks at your base period earnings. You need to have earned wages in at least two quarters of your base period and meet the minimum wage requirements. Your base period is typically the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you file your claim.

•So it's based on quarters not months? That's confusing. How do I know what my base period wages were?

•Yes, it's quarterly. You can check your wage history on your SecureAccess Washington account once you start the application process. The system will show you exactly what wages they have on file.

You need to have earned at least $1,005 in your highest quarter AND have total base period earnings of at least 1.5 times your high quarter wages. So if your highest quarter was $2,000, you'd need at least $3,000 total in your base period.

•That actually sounds like I might qualify then. I think I made around $1,200 in my best quarter and probably $4,000 total over the year.

•Sounds like you should be good then! The part-time work shouldn't matter as long as you hit those wage thresholds.

honestly the whole calling washington esd thing is such a nightmare. i spent literally hours trying to get through to someone to ask this same question. if you need to talk to someone about your specific situation, i found this service called claimyr.com that actually got me through to an esd agent. they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. saved me so much time and frustration.

•Never heard of that service before. Does it actually work or is it just another scam?

•No it's legit. They basically handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when an agent picks up. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

•I might try this. I've been trying to call ESD for two weeks about my adjudication and can never get through.

Don't forget about the job separation requirements too. You need to be unemployed through no fault of your own. If you quit or got fired for misconduct, you won't qualify regardless of your work history.

•Oh I didn't quit. My hours got cut to almost nothing because business was slow, so I think that counts as a layoff?

Ethan Wilson
•Yeah that should qualify as a reduction in hours/partial layoff. You'll want to mention that specifically in your application.

ugh the washington esd system is SO confusing. i applied three times before i finally understood what they were asking for. the whole base period thing makes no sense why cant they just say you need X months of work like normal people would think???

•It's because they need to track earnings for tax purposes. Employers report wages quarterly, so that's how the system is set up.

•i guess that makes sense but its still stupid confusing for regular people trying to figure out if they qualify

Also keep in mind that if you don't qualify for regular unemployment, you might still be eligible for other programs. Washington has extended benefit programs sometimes, and there might be other assistance available depending on your situation.

•What kind of other programs? I hadn't heard about anything else.

•Things like WorkFirst, food assistance, housing help. Not unemployment specifically but other safety net programs if you're struggling financially.

Just apply anyway! The worst they can say is no, and at least you'll know for sure. The application will tell you if you qualify or not based on your actual wage history.

•Yeah I think I will. Better to try than wonder about it.

•Exactly. Plus if you don't qualify now, you'll know how much more you need to work to qualify in the future.

Make sure you file your claim right away if you do qualify. There's usually a waiting period, and you can't get benefits for weeks before you actually file the claim.

•Good point. I'll start the application this weekend.

•Smart. And remember you have to file weekly claims to actually get paid, even after you're approved.

The income requirements change every year too. What was required last year might be different this year. Best to check the current Washington ESD website for the most up-to-date numbers.

•Good point. The amounts I mentioned are for 2024, so they might be slightly different now.

•Yeah the website should have the current year's requirements posted.

i had a similar situation where i worked part time and was worried about qualifying. turns out i had just enough wages in my base period. the key is that it doesn't matter how many hours you worked, just how much you earned total.

Zara Ahmed
•That's reassuring. I was really worried about the inconsistent hours.

Sophia Nguyen
•yeah hours dont matter for qualification, only the dollar amounts. though once you're on unemployment you have to report any part time work

One thing to watch out for - if you're still working part-time, you can still collect unemployment but your benefits might be reduced. Washington has a partial unemployment program for people whose hours got cut.

Zara Ahmed
•Oh that's interesting. I am still technically employed, just with almost no hours.

Jacob Smithson
•Yeah you'd probably qualify for partial benefits then. You just have to report whatever you earn each week.

Don't stress too much about it. The application process will walk you through everything and tell you if you qualify. If you have questions during the process, that's when you might want to call Washington ESD or use one of those services people mentioned to get through to an agent.

btw if you do get approved, make sure you understand the job search requirements. you have to be actively looking for work and keep a log of your job search activities. thats a common reason people get disqualified later.

•What kind of job search activities do you have to do?

•you need to make at least 3 job contacts per week and keep records. can be online applications, networking, interviews, etc. just has to be documented

Also remember that if you get denied initially, you can appeal the decision. Sometimes the system makes mistakes or doesn't have complete information about your work history.

•Yeah I had to appeal my initial denial because my employer hadn't reported my wages correctly. Won the appeal and got all my back benefits.

Aiden Rodríguez
•Exactly. The appeals process exists for a reason, so don't give up if you get denied.

The whole system is set up to be confusing honestly. I think they hope people will just give up and not apply. But if you earned the wages and lost your job through no fault of your own, you deserve the benefits you paid into through your payroll taxes.

•This is so true. It's your money that you paid in, not some handout.

•Exactly. Don't let the bureaucracy intimidate you out of claiming what you're entitled to.

If you need help navigating the system or talking to ESD agents, I also had good luck with that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Saved me hours of frustration trying to get through on the phone.

Zara Ahmed
•I might look into that if I run into problems. Sounds like a lot of people have trouble reaching ESD.

•Yeah the phone system is terrible. Having someone else handle the calling part is worth it if you're having issues.

Good luck with your application! It sounds like you probably qualify based on what others have said about the wage requirements. The worst part is just waiting for the system to process everything.
