How many months do you have to work for unemployment benefits in Washington?
I've been working at my current job for about 8 months now and I'm worried I might get laid off soon due to company downsizing. I know you need to work a certain amount of time to qualify for unemployment benefits but I can't find clear info on Washington ESD's website about exactly how long. Does anyone know how many months you have to work for unemployment in Washington state? I'm stressed because I haven't been working that long and don't want to be stuck without any income if I lose my job.

It's not really about months, it's about quarters and earnings. You need to have worked in at least 2 quarters during your base year and earned a minimum amount. The base year is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you file. So if you've been working 8 months consistently, you should probably qualify.

•That's confusing - what exactly is a quarter? Like 3 months?

Emily Parker
•Yes, a quarter is 3 months. Jan-Mar, Apr-Jun, Jul-Sep, Oct-Dec.

I think you need to earn like $1,000 in your highest quarter or something like that. But honestly the Washington ESD website is so confusing about this stuff.

•It's actually more complicated than that. You need earnings in at least 2 quarters AND your total base year earnings need to be at least 1.5 times your highest quarter earnings.

I had this same worry when I got laid off last year! If you've been working steady for 8 months you should be fine. The key thing is you need to have worked during at least 2 different calendar quarters. So like if you started in March, you would have worked in Q1 (March), Q2 (Apr-Jun), Q3 (Jul-Sep), and part of Q4. That's definitely enough.

•That makes me feel better! I started in April so I've definitely worked in multiple quarters.

The hardest part isn't qualifying, it's actually getting through to Washington ESD when you need help! I spent weeks trying to call them about my claim. Finally found this service called Claimyr that actually got me through to a real person at claimyr.com. They have a video showing how it works too https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ

•How much does that cost though? I can't afford to pay extra just to talk to someone.

•It was worth it for me because I was stuck for so long, but I get not everyone wants to pay for something that should be free.

ugh the whole quarters thing is so stupid. why can't they just say 6 months or whatever like normal people

•Because it's designed by bureaucrats who want to make everything as complicated as possible!

Let me break this down properly since there's some confusion here. For Washington state unemployment (UI), you need: 1) Earnings in at least 2 quarters of your base year, 2) Total base year earnings of at least 1.5 times your highest quarter, 3) Your highest quarter earnings must be at least $1,000. The base year is the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you apply.

•This is super helpful! So if I make like $2,500 per quarter, I should definitely qualify?

Victoria Scott
•Yes, that would easily meet all the requirements. You'd have earnings in multiple quarters and well above the minimum thresholds.

•See this is why I was confused earlier, I thought it was just about the $1,000 thing.

What if you worked part-time? Does that count the same way?

Victoria Scott
•Part-time work counts as long as you meet the earnings requirements. It doesn't matter if you worked 40 hours a week or 20, just that you earned enough.

The thing that really helped me was keeping track of my pay stubs so I knew exactly what I earned each quarter. Made filing my claim so much easier when I had all that info ready.

•Good idea! I should start organizing my pay stubs just in case.

•Washington ESD actually has access to your wage records from employers, but it's still good to have your own records.

The whole system is broken anyway. Even if you qualify they'll find some reason to delay your claim for weeks or months. I know people who waited 12 weeks just to get their first payment.

•That's exactly what happened to my friend! Her claim went into adjudication and sat there forever.

•That's actually when I used Claimyr - my claim was stuck in adjudication and I couldn't get anyone on the phone to explain why. They helped me get through and it turned out to be a simple issue that got resolved quickly once I talked to someone.

Wait so if I've only been working for like 4 months I probably don't qualify?

Victoria Scott
•It depends on when you started and how much you've earned. If you started 4 months ago and have been working in 2 different quarters with decent earnings, you might still qualify.

•I started in September so I've worked Sep-Dec. That's only Q3 and Q4 right?

Emily Parker
•Yes, that's 2 quarters. As long as you've earned enough in those quarters you should meet the basic requirements.

This is all making my head spin. Why can't Washington ESD just have a simple calculator on their website where you put in how long you worked and how much you made?

Daniel Rogers
•Because that would be too logical and helpful!

•They actually do have some tools on their website but they're buried pretty deep and not very user-friendly.

Thanks everyone! This has been really helpful. Sounds like with 8 months of steady work I should be okay if the worst happens. Still hoping I don't get laid off though!

•Good luck! Even if you do get laid off, at least you know you'll have some income coming in.

•Just make sure to file right away if you do lose your job. There's a waiting week before benefits start.

I've been on unemployment twice in Washington and both times I qualified with less than a year of work. The quarters thing seems scary but it's actually not that hard to meet if you've been working regularly.

Does anyone know if there are different rules for seasonal workers?
0 coins
Victoria Scott
•Same basic rules apply but there might be some special considerations. You'd need to check with Washington ESD directly for seasonal work situations.

Pro tip: if you do end up filing for unemployment, sign up for direct deposit right away. Paper checks take forever and sometimes get lost in the mail.

Justin Evans
•Good to know! I'll remember that if I need to file.

•Yes! Direct deposit made such a difference. Got my payments way faster.

The real question is whether you can actually get through to anyone at Washington ESD when you need help. I tried calling for 3 weeks straight and never got through.

•Same here! The phone system is absolutely useless. You either get busy signals or sit on hold for hours just to get disconnected.

•This is why services like Claimyr exist. I was skeptical at first but when you can't get through any other way, it's worth it to actually talk to someone who can help with your claim.

Just want to add that you also have to be able and available for work, actively seeking work, etc. It's not just about having worked enough to qualify initially.

Justin Evans
•Right, I know about the job search requirements and all that. Just wanted to make sure I'd actually qualify in the first place!

Another thing to consider - if you get severance pay that might affect when your benefits start. Just something to keep in mind if you do get laid off.

Justin Evans
•I don't think my company offers severance but good to know about that potential issue.

The earnings requirements aren't that high really. Even at minimum wage if you work steady for 8 months you should easily qualify. The bigger challenge is dealing with Washington ESD's terrible customer service when you need help.

Oliver Alexander
•So true! The system itself isn't that complicated once you understand it, but getting help when something goes wrong is nearly impossible.

•Which is exactly why I was so glad to find Claimyr when my claim got stuck. Sometimes you just need to talk to an actual person to get things moving.

Thanks for this thread! I've been wondering the same thing since my job has been talking about potential layoffs. Feel much better knowing 8 months should be enough.
