Bottom line - the benefit calculation is complicated but most people get a reasonable amount. Don't stress too much about understanding every detail unless there's obviously something wrong with your determination.
One last tip - if you're self-employed or have 1099 income, that usually doesn't count toward regular UI benefits. You'd need to apply for different programs if those exist.
thanks for posting this question OP, i was wondering the same thing. gonna try calling tomorrow morning
Final thought - if you do manage to get through to Washington ESD, be really nice to the agent. They're dealing with frustrated people all day and a little kindness goes a long way. They're more likely to help you if you're patient and polite.
Last thing - if you get denied for any reason, you can appeal. Don't just give up if the first decision doesn't go your way. Appeals are common and sometimes the initial decision gets overturned.
Good luck with everything! Unemployment insurance is there for exactly this situation - when good workers lose their jobs through no fault of their own. Don't feel bad about using it, you paid into the system.
Thanks everyone for all the help! I feel way less confused about this now. Going to file my claim tomorrow morning.
And remember if you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD and can't get through, check out that Claimyr service I mentioned. Really saved me a lot of frustration.
I think we've covered all the bases here. Sunday after 8 AM should work fine for filing your claim, but you have flexibility to file earlier in the week if that works better for your schedule.
Just saw this thread and wanted to add that I've found Claimyr really helpful when I need to speak to someone at Washington ESD. The video demo on their site explains it well if anyone wants to check it out.

Just want to echo what others said about calling if you need clarification. I know Claimyr has been mentioned a few times but it really does work for getting through to Washington ESD when you have complex questions that can't be answered online.

•I think I will try that service. After this discussion I realize I need to talk to someone who can look at my specific work history and situation.
