How many hours can you work and still qualify for Washington ESD unemployment benefits?
I just lost my main job but I still have a part-time gig that gives me about 15 hours a week. I'm trying to figure out if I can still file for unemployment with Washington ESD or if working those hours disqualifies me completely. Does anyone know what the hour limit is? I really need the UI benefits to cover my bills but don't want to mess up my claim by working too much.

You can definitely work part-time and still collect unemployment in Washington! The rule is you have to work less than your full-time hours AND earn less than 1.5 times your weekly benefit amount. So if your weekly benefit is $400, you can earn up to $600 that week and still get partial benefits.

•That's really helpful, thank you! So I just need to report my hours and earnings when I file my weekly claim?

•Exactly! Always report your gross earnings before taxes. Washington ESD will calculate your partial benefit automatically.

•Good to know! Did you have any issues with Washington ESD questioning your work hours?

I had a similar situation and couldn't get through to Washington ESD to ask about the work hour requirements. The phone lines are always busy and I kept getting disconnected. I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually gets you connected to an ESD agent - saved me hours of calling. There's even a demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ

•Is that legit? I've been trying to reach someone at Washington ESD for weeks about my partial work situation.

•Yeah it worked for me! I was able to talk to an actual person and get clarification on my specific work hours question.

The Washington ESD partial unemployment rules are pretty generous compared to other states. You can work and earn up to 1.5 times your weekly benefit amount before you lose all benefits for that week. But remember - you still have to be actively searching for full-time work and meet all the other eligibility requirements.

•Do I still need to do the job search requirements even if I'm working part-time?
0 coins
Ethan Wilson
•Yes, you still need to complete your required job search activities each week. Part-time work doesn't exempt you from that requirement.

•Wait really? That seems like a lot of work if you're already working some hours...

This whole system is so confusing! I work irregular hours at a restaurant and some weeks I get 30 hours, other weeks maybe 10. How am I supposed to know if I qualify each week?? Washington ESD makes everything so complicated.

•It can be confusing with irregular hours. The key is to report accurately each week - some weeks you might get full benefits, others partial, and some weeks maybe none if you work too much.

•I guess I just have to file every week and see what happens. Thanks for explaining it.

Does anyone know if there's a limit on how many weeks you can work part-time while collecting? I've been doing this for about 8 weeks now.

•There's no specific limit on partial work weeks, but your total benefit year is still limited to your maximum benefit amount or 26 weeks, whichever comes first.

•Ok that makes sense. So I'm still using up my benefit weeks even if I'm only getting partial payments.

I tried calling Washington ESD about this exact question last month and never got through. Finally used that Claimyr thing someone mentioned and actually talked to a real person who explained the partial benefit calculation. Worth it just to get accurate info instead of guessing.

•How much does that service cost? I'm already tight on money.

•It was worth it for me to get the right information quickly instead of wasting weeks trying to call. Check out their website for details.

Be careful about reporting your hours correctly! I made a mistake on my weekly claim once and had to deal with an overpayment issue later. Washington ESD doesn't mess around with incorrect reporting.

•What kind of mistake did you make? I want to make sure I don't do the same thing.

•I reported my net pay instead of gross pay one week. Even though it was an honest mistake, they considered it an overpayment and I had to pay it back.

•That's harsh! Did you have to appeal it or just pay it back?

The Washington ESD website has a calculator somewhere that shows you how much you can earn and still get benefits. Might be worth looking that up before you start working.

Luca Esposito
•I'll definitely look for that calculator. Do you remember where on their site it was?

•I think it was under the 'Claimants' section but their website is kind of hard to navigate honestly.

just report everything and dont try to game the system. washington esd will figure out your benefits automatically

•This is the best advice. Better to be over-cautious than deal with overpayment issues later.

I'm in a similar boat - lost my full-time job but kept my weekend catering gig. The partial benefits really help bridge the gap while I'm looking for something full-time. Just be honest about everything and you'll be fine.

Luca Esposito
•That's encouraging to hear! How long have you been collecting partial benefits?
0 coins
Giovanni Rossi
•About 3 months now. Some weeks I get more UI money, some weeks less, depending on how much catering work I get. It all balances out.

One thing to watch out for - if you're consistently working close to full-time hours, Washington ESD might question whether you're truly unemployed and looking for work. I've heard of people getting flagged for that.

Dylan Mitchell
•How many hours would trigger that kind of review? I'm working about 25-30 hours most weeks.

•I'm not sure of the exact threshold, but if you're consistently working over 30 hours they might consider that substantial employment.

The good news is Washington state is pretty worker-friendly with these rules. Some states cut you off completely if you work even a few hours. Here you can actually make more money combining partial UI with part-time work than just getting full benefits.

•That's exactly what I'm hoping for! Every little bit helps right now.

•Yeah the 1.5x rule is actually pretty generous. Just make sure you understand how it works before you start.

I had so much trouble getting clarification on this from Washington ESD directly. Their website is confusing and calling is impossible. Ended up using Claimyr to actually speak with someone who could explain the partial benefit rules clearly. Game changer.

•For me it was night and day. Instead of spending hours trying to get through, I was talking to an ESD agent within minutes. Worth checking out their demo video to see how it works.

Don't forget you also have to be able and available for full-time work. If your part-time schedule conflicts with potential full-time opportunities, that could be an issue.

•Good point! My part-time job is pretty flexible though, so I think I'll be okay there.

•Yeah flexibility is key. If you can't take a full-time job because of your part-time schedule, that's when you might run into problems.

The weekly claim process is pretty straightforward once you get used to it. Just answer honestly about your work hours and earnings. The system calculates everything automatically.
