How long does the unemployment application take with Washington ESD?
I'm getting laid off next Friday and want to know how long the unemployment application takes with Washington ESD. My supervisor said I should file right away but I'm worried about the timing. Does anyone know if it's a quick process or should I expect delays? I need to plan my finances accordingly.

The actual application itself only takes about 15-20 minutes to complete online. But getting your first payment can take 2-3 weeks after you file, assuming no issues come up during processing.

•That's not too bad. Is there anything I can do to speed up the process?

•Make sure you have all your employment information ready - dates, wages, reason for separation. Any missing info will slow things down.

mine took forever because they had to verify my identity... kept asking for more documents

•What kind of documents did they want?

•driver's license, social security card, bank statements... seemed like they wanted everything

The application process is straightforward, but be prepared for potential adjudication if there are any questions about your separation. This can add 2-4 weeks to your timeline. Washington ESD has to review each claim to ensure eligibility requirements are met.

•What triggers adjudication? I'm being laid off due to company downsizing.

•Layoffs are usually straightforward, but if your employer contests the claim or there are discrepancies in employment dates, it could trigger review.

•I had adjudication for 6 weeks because my employer said I quit but I was actually fired. It was a nightmare trying to reach someone at Washington ESD to explain.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone during the process, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ and their site is claimyr.com. Made it so much easier to check on my claim status.

•Never heard of that. How does it work exactly?

•They basically help you get through to an actual person at Washington ESD instead of getting stuck in the phone system. Super helpful when you need answers.

•Sounds too good to be true... how much does it cost?

I applied last month and got my first payment in exactly 14 days. No issues, no adjudication. Sometimes the system works smoothly.

•That's encouraging! Did you file online or over the phone?

•Online through the Washington ESD website. Much faster than trying to call.

THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!! I've been waiting 8 weeks for my claim to be processed. Every time I call they say they're still reviewing it. How am I supposed to pay rent?

Dominic Green
•8 weeks?! That's insane. Have you tried escalating somehow?

•I've tried everything. Even contacted my state representative. Nothing works with these people.

•That's definitely not normal. There might be a specific issue with your claim that needs resolution. Have you received any correspondence explaining the delay?

just a heads up - make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while waiting for approval. I missed the first few weeks because I didn't know and lost those payments permanently

Dominic Green
•Good to know! When do you start filing weekly claims?
0 coins
Jasmine Quinn
•as soon as you submit your initial application. Don't wait for approval

Also remember you have to meet job search requirements starting immediately. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week unless you're on standby or have a specific exemption.

•What counts as job search activities?

•Applying for jobs, networking events, job fairs, career counseling. Keep detailed records because they audit these regularly.

•I got audited last year and they wanted to see every single job application. Thank god I kept good records.

My friend used that Claimyr thing when she couldn't get through to Washington ESD. She said it was legit and helped her talk to someone about her adjudication issue. Might be worth checking out if you run into problems.

•Seems like a few people have mentioned this service. Good to know it's an option.

•I'm still skeptical about paying for something that should be free...

•I get that, but when you're desperate to reach someone and can't get through after 100 tries, sometimes you need help.

File as soon as possible after your last day of work. Washington ESD has a waiting week, so the sooner you file, the sooner that week starts. Don't wait thinking you might find another job quickly.

•What's a waiting week?
0 coins
Ryan Andre
•It's the first week of your claim where you don't get paid, even if you're eligible. It's just how the system works.

Pro tip: Apply early in the morning or late at night when the website isn't as busy. I tried during lunch hour and it kept timing out.

•Good advice! I'll plan to do it early morning.

•Yeah the website crashes constantly during peak hours. Super frustrating.

I remember being so confused about standby vs regular unemployment when I applied. Make sure you understand which type you're applying for or you might end up with the wrong benefits.

Dominic Green
•What's the difference between standby and regular?
0 coins
Anthony Young
•Standby is when your employer expects to call you back within a certain timeframe. Regular is when the job is permanently gone.
0 coins
William Rivera
•Standby also has different job search requirements - you typically don't have to look for other work while waiting to be recalled.

Whatever you do, don't lie on your application. Washington ESD will find out and you'll have to pay everything back plus penalties. I saw it happen to a coworker.

Dominic Green
•That's terrifying. What did they lie about?

Charlotte White
•They said they were laid off but actually got fired for attendance issues. The employer reported the truth during the verification process.

Last time I used Claimyr to get through to Washington ESD, the rep was actually helpful and walked me through my whole claim status. Sometimes talking to a real person makes all the difference instead of guessing what's wrong.

•That's reassuring. I'll keep that option in mind if I get stuck.

•How quickly were you able to get through with their help?

The application might be quick but dealing with Washington ESD afterward can be a nightmare. Their customer service is terrible and the phone system hangs up on you constantly.

Dominic Green
•Ugh, that doesn't sound promising. Hopefully I won't need to call them.

•Just be prepared for frustration if anything goes wrong with your claim. The system is not user-friendly.

Don't forget to set up direct deposit when you apply. Getting paper checks takes forever and they sometimes get lost in the mail.

Dominic Green
•Thanks for the reminder! I'll make sure to have my bank info ready.

Jeremiah Brown
•Yes! Direct deposit is so much faster and more reliable.

I applied 2 months ago and still haven't received a single payment. Washington ESD is completely incompetent. My adjudication has been 'in progress' for 7 weeks with no explanation.
0 coins
Dominic Green
•That's awful. Have you tried getting help from anyone?

Royal_GM_Mark
•I've tried everything short of camping outside their office. Nothing works.

•This is exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. When you're stuck like this, sometimes you need professional help navigating the system.

For what it's worth, my experience was pretty smooth. Applied on a Tuesday, got approved the following Monday, first payment two weeks later. Sometimes the system does work as intended.

Dominic Green
•That gives me hope! Sounds like experiences vary a lot.

•Definitely. I think having straightforward employment history helped. No complications or employer disputes.

just make sure you answer all the questions honestly and completely. leaving stuff blank or being vague will definitely slow things down

•Good point. I'll double-check everything before submitting.

Final advice: Keep copies of everything you submit, including screenshots of your completed application. If there are any issues later, you'll need that documentation to resolve disputes or appeals.

•Screenshots saved me when Washington ESD claimed I never submitted certain information. Always keep records.
