How long does it take to get unemployment approved by Washington ESD?
I just filed my unemployment claim with Washington ESD last week and I'm wondering how long it typically takes to get approved and start receiving benefits. My last job laid me off due to budget cuts and I've never filed for unemployment before. I submitted all my employment information and did the ID verification through SecureAccess Washington. The status just says 'claim submitted' but I have no idea what to expect for timing. Does anyone know how long the process usually takes?

The typical timeline for Washington ESD unemployment claims is usually 2-4 weeks from when you first file to when you receive your first payment, assuming there are no complications. You'll need to file your weekly claims even while waiting for the initial approval. The first week is always a waiting week where you don't get paid, but you still need to file it.

•Thanks! I wasn't sure about filing the weekly claims before approval. I'll make sure to do that this Sunday.

•Yeah definitely keep filing those weekly claims or you'll lose those weeks of benefits even if you get approved later

It really depends on your situation. If Washington ESD needs to verify your employment history or if there are any red flags, it could take much longer. Some people get approved in 2 weeks, others wait 6-8 weeks or more if it goes into adjudication.

•What would cause it to go into adjudication? I'm worried I might have missed something on my application.

•Common reasons include quit vs fired disputes, questions about your availability to work, or if you had any employer issues. If your employer contests the claim, that can trigger adjudication too.

I've been waiting 5 weeks now and still nothing. My claim is stuck in adjudication and I can't get through to anyone at Washington ESD. I've called dozens of times and either get busy signals or get disconnected after waiting on hold for hours. This is ridiculous.

•Have you tried calling right at 8am when they open? That's usually the best time to get through to an agent.

•I had the same problem trying to reach Washington ESD. I actually found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an agent. They handle all the calling and waiting for you - check out claimyr.com. There's even a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

OMG 5 weeks?? I'm already stressed about money and I just filed mine yesterday. This is going to be a nightmare isn't it? What if I can't pay my rent?

•Don't panic yet! Most claims without complications get processed much faster than 5 weeks. That person's case sounds like it has special circumstances.

•You might want to look into emergency assistance programs while you wait. Some counties have rental assistance available.

The whole Washington ESD system is broken. I waited 7 weeks last year and when I finally got through to someone, they told me I filled out ONE form wrong and that's why it was delayed. Seven weeks for a form error!

•That's frustrating but not typical. Most people don't have delays that long unless there are complicating factors.

•Well it happened to me and my neighbor too. The system is overwhelmed and understaffed.

If you're laid off and have straightforward employment history, you should be approved relatively quickly. The key is making sure you file your weekly claims on time and meet all the job search requirements once you start receiving benefits.

•What are the job search requirements? I haven't started looking yet since I just got laid off.

•You need to register with WorkSourceWA and conduct at least 3 job search activities per week once you start receiving benefits. Keep detailed records of your job search activities.

I got approved in exactly 2 weeks last month. No issues, just had to be patient. The waiting is the worst part but it does happen.

•That's reassuring to hear! Did you have to do anything special or just wait?

•Just filed my weekly claims and waited. Made sure all my employer info was accurate when I initially filed.

Been there done that. The trick is staying on top of your weekly claims and not missing any deadlines. Even if your initial claim takes a while, you'll get backpaid for all the weeks you properly filed.

•Good to know about the backpay. I was worried I'd lose those weeks if approval took too long.

Check your online account regularly for any requests for additional information. Sometimes Washington ESD will ask for more docs and if you don't respond quickly, it can delay everything.

•I'll make sure to check it daily. Thanks for the tip!

My sister used Claimyr when she couldn't get through to Washington ESD and it worked great. They got her connected to an agent the same day and she was able to get her claim status updated. Way better than spending hours on hold.

•I might have to try that. I'm so tired of calling and getting nowhere.

•Is that service legit? I'm always skeptical of third-party services for government stuff.

•Yeah it's legit, they just handle the calling part for you. You still talk directly to the Washington ESD agent once they connect you.

The timing really varies. I've filed 3 times over the years and it was 2 weeks, 4 weeks, and 6 weeks respectively. The 6 week one was during a busy period when lots of people were filing.

•What time of year was the 6 week delay? I'm wondering if timing matters.

•That was right after the holidays when a lot of seasonal workers were filing. Summer tends to be faster from what I've heard.

Just be prepared for the waiting game. The first time is always the most stressful because you don't know what to expect. Once you get through it once, you'll know the process for next time (hopefully there isn't a next time though!).

•Hoping this is my only time needing unemployment! Thanks for the encouragement.

Make sure you're available for work and actively seeking employment. They can and do check on this stuff, and if you're not available it can delay or disqualify your claim.

•I'm definitely available and already starting to look. Good reminder to document everything.

The system is so much better now than it was during 2020-2021. Back then people were waiting months. Now it's usually just a few weeks unless there's a problem with your claim.

•Better is relative. It's still a pain to deal with Washington ESD.

I actually used Claimyr last week when I needed to check on my claim status. Got through to an agent in about 30 minutes instead of calling all day myself. Totally worth it when you need to talk to someone quickly.

•I'm definitely going to try this if my claim doesn't move soon. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Bottom line - most people get approved within 2-4 weeks if there are no complications. Keep filing your weekly claims, stay available for work, and don't stress too much about the timing. It'll come through.
