How long does it take to fill out Washington ESD unemployment application?
I just got laid off yesterday and need to file for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD. I've never done this before and I'm wondering how much time I should set aside to complete the application? I have all my employment history and tax info ready but I want to make sure I don't rush through it and make mistakes. Should I expect this to take 30 minutes or more like 2 hours? Any tips on what to have ready beforehand?

It took me about 45 minutes when I filed last month. The hardest part was gathering all my employment info for the past 18 months - make sure you have exact dates, employer addresses, and reason for separation for each job. Washington ESD asks for a lot of detail.

•Thanks! I worked at 3 different places in the last year so I'll need to dig up all that info.

•definitely have your social security card handy too, they verify everything

Plan for at least an hour, maybe more if you have complicated work history. The Washington ESD online system can be slow during peak times and you don't want to get timed out halfway through. I'd recommend doing it early morning or late evening when fewer people are online.

•Good point about the timing. I was planning to do it right now but maybe I should wait until tonight.

•I got timed out twice trying to file during lunch hour. So frustrating to start over!

The application itself isn't too bad but calling Washington ESD if you have questions is a nightmare. I spent 4 hours on hold just to ask about one field I wasn't sure about. If you need to talk to someone about your claim, there's actually a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to ESD agents. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Wow 4 hours on hold is crazy! I'll check out that Claimyr thing in case I need help.

•Never heard of Claimyr before but anything that helps avoid those phone wait times sounds worth it

took me forever because I kept second-guessing myself on every question lol. make sure you know your bank routing and account number for direct deposit too

Andre Moreau
•Oh yeah I definitely want direct deposit set up. Thanks for the reminder!

One thing that slowed me down was the work search requirements section. Washington ESD wants to know what you plan to do for job searching. Even though you don't have to start the actual work search until after your first week, they still ask about your plan during the application.

Andre Moreau
•Wait, so I need to have a job search plan ready when I apply? What kind of stuff do they want to know?

Zoe Christodoulou
•Just basic stuff like what types of jobs you'll look for, where you'll search (like WorkSource, indeed, etc), and how many jobs you plan to apply for per week. Nothing too detailed.

The system has gotten better over the years but still glitchy sometimes. Save your progress frequently if the system lets you. I lost everything once and had to start over.

Andre Moreau
•That would be so annoying! I'll definitely save as I go.

•Yeah the auto-save doesn't always work. Better to be safe than sorry.

honestly the application part is easy compared to waiting for them to process it. mine took 3 weeks to get approved and I couldn't get anyone on the phone to check status

Andre Moreau
•3 weeks?! That's a long time to wait for money when you're unemployed.

•That's exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier - they can help you get through to check on claim status when it's taking too long.

Make sure you have your driver's license or state ID ready. They ask for all that info during the identity verification part. Also if you have a spouse they want to know about their income too.

Andre Moreau
•Good to know about the spouse income thing. My husband works so I'll need his pay stub info.

The questions about why you lost your job can be tricky. Be honest but make sure you understand the difference between being laid off vs fired vs quit. Washington ESD treats these very differently for eligibility.

Andre Moreau
•I was definitely laid off due to company downsizing, so that should be straightforward.

•Perfect, layoffs are usually the easiest to get approved for benefits.

don't forget to file your weekly claim right away after you get approved! I missed my first week because I didn't realize I had to do it separately from the initial application
0 coins
Andre Moreau
•Wait, the weekly claims are separate? I thought it was all one process.
0 coins
Zoe Christodoulou
•Yeah the initial application just establishes your claim. Then you have to file weekly claims every week to actually get paid. It's confusing at first.

Pro tip: read all the instructions carefully before you start. Washington ESD has specific formatting requirements for things like phone numbers and addresses. Getting it wrong can delay your claim.

•Thanks for the heads up. I tend to rush through forms so I'll force myself to slow down.

If you get stuck on any questions, there's usually a little help icon you can click for more info. Don't just guess - wrong answers can cause problems later during adjudication.

Andre Moreau
•What's adjudication? Should I be worried about that?
0 coins
Fatima Al-Mazrouei
•It's just when they review your claim for eligibility. Usually happens automatically but can take a few weeks if there are any questions about your case.

Another thing about getting help - if your claim gets stuck in adjudication and you can't reach anyone at Washington ESD, that's when services like Claimyr really come in handy. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

•I might need to try that Claimyr thing you mentioned. Been trying to get through to ESD for a week about my claim status.

•Definitely check out their video demo first to see how it works. Really straightforward process.

Just finished helping my neighbor with his application last week. Took us about an hour total but that included looking up all his old employer info. If you're organized it should be faster.

Andre Moreau
•That's helpful to know. I think I'm pretty organized so hopefully I can get through it quickly.

One more thing - make sure you apply as soon as possible after losing your job. There's a waiting week in Washington but you want to get the process started right away. Benefits are backdated to when you file, not when you lost your job.

Andre Moreau
•Good point! I'll definitely file today then. Don't want to lose any potential benefits.

Zoe Christodoulou
•Exactly, every day you wait is money you might not be able to get back.

the hardest part for me was figuring out my gross wages for each employer. make sure you have your paystubs or tax forms handy because they want exact amounts

Andre Moreau
•I have my W-2 from last year but not all my recent paystubs. Will that be enough?

Giovanni Gallo
•you might need more recent info too. check your online payroll account if your company has one

Washington ESD's online system is pretty user-friendly compared to what it used to be. Just take your time and don't worry if it seems overwhelming at first. Everyone feels that way with their first unemployment claim.

make sure your email address is correct because they send important stuff there. I almost missed my eligibility interview notice because it went to my old email

Andre Moreau
•Oh wow, that could have been bad! I'll double check my email address for sure.

Overall it's not too bad if you're prepared. Washington ESD has streamlined the process a lot. Just budget about an hour and have all your documents ready beforehand.
