How long do you have to work to claim unemployment benefits in Washington?

I'm trying to figure out if I qualify for unemployment in Washington state. I've been working at my current job for about 8 months but before that I had a gap of unemployment for like 6 months. My friend told me you need to work for a full year to get benefits but I've seen other people say it's different. Does anyone know what the actual work requirement is for Washington ESD? I'm worried I might not have worked long enough if I lose my job.

The work requirement in Washington isn't about how long you worked at one job - it's about your total earnings during what they call the 'base period.' You need to have earned at least $3,850 during your base period, and you also need earnings in at least two quarters of that base period. The base period is usually the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you file your claim.

Thanks! So if I file in January 2025, my base period would be January 2024 through December 2024?

0 coins

Actually no - if you file in January 2025, your base period would be October 2023 through September 2024. It's the first four of the last five completed quarters.

I was in a similar situation last year and qualified even though I had only worked 7 months total. As long as you made enough money in at least two different quarters during your base period, you should be good. The dollar amount matters more than the time.

0 coins

That's encouraging! Did you have any trouble with the application process?

0 coins

Not really, just had to wait through adjudication for about 3 weeks because I had that gap in employment. They wanted to verify why I wasn't working during that period.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check your eligibility, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you actually reach an agent. They have a system that calls for you and gets you connected - check out claimyr.com. There's even a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

0 coins

Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true honestly.

0 coins

Yeah I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Got connected to an ESD agent in like 20 minutes instead of spending all day redialing.

Wait I'm confused about the quarters thing. If I started working in March 2024 and it's now January 2025, would that count as two quarters? March would be Q1 and then I worked through Q2, Q3, and Q4 right?

0 coins

Close but quarters don't work that way. Q1 is January-March, Q2 is April-June, Q3 is July-September, Q4 is October-December. So if you started in March 2024, you'd have earnings in Q1 2024 (March only), Q2 2024, Q3 2024, and Q4 2024.

0 coins

Ohhhh that makes more sense, thanks for clarifying!

0 coins

The whole system is ridiculous if you ask me. Why should someone who worked 11 months get benefits but someone who worked 10 months doesn't? It's all about the arbitrary quarters and dollar amounts, not about whether you actually need help.

0 coins

I mean there has to be some kind of threshold though, otherwise people could work one day and claim benefits.

0 coins

True but the quarter system penalizes people who start jobs at weird times of the year. It's unnecessarily complicated.

0 coins

Don't forget about the alternative base period too. If you don't qualify under the regular base period, Washington ESD can look at a more recent time frame - the last four completed quarters before you file. This helps people who recently started working or returned to work.

0 coins

Would that help in my situation since I have that 6 month gap?

0 coins

Possibly! It depends on when your gap was and how much you earned in each quarter. The alternative base period might capture more of your recent earnings.

0 coins

ugh i went through this same thing last year and it was such a headache trying to figure out if i qualified. ended up having to call washington esd like 50 times before getting through to someone who could actually check my earnings history

0 coins

That's exactly what I'm worried about! Did they end up approving your claim?

0 coins

yeah eventually but it took forever. wish i had known about that claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier

0 coins

Just to clarify the exact requirements since there's been some confusion: You need at least $3,850 in total earnings during your base period AND you need earnings in at least two different quarters of that base period. There's also a requirement that your highest quarter earnings be at least 1.5 times your weekly benefit amount, but that's calculated automatically.

0 coins

What happens if you meet the dollar requirement but only worked in one quarter?

0 coins

Then you wouldn't qualify under that base period. This is where the alternative base period might help if you had earnings in multiple quarters under that timeframe.

0 coins

I qualified with only 6 months of work but I made decent money during those months. The key is hitting those dollar thresholds across multiple quarters, not the length of time you worked.

0 coins

That's reassuring! I made pretty good money during the 8 months I worked, so hopefully that helps.

0 coins

You should be fine then. The worst case is they deny you initially but you can always appeal if you think they made a mistake.

0 coins

Pro tip: if you're not sure about your earnings history, you can request a wage statement from Washington ESD before you even apply. It shows exactly what employers reported for you in each quarter.

0 coins

How do you request that? Through the same website where you file claims?

0 coins

Yeah, you can request it through your SecureAccess Washington account on the ESD website. Takes a few days to process but gives you all the info you need.

0 coins

For anyone still struggling to get through to ESD to check their eligibility, seriously check out Claimyr. I used it again last week when I had questions about my job search requirements and got connected right away. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

0 coins

How much does it cost?

0 coins

I'd rather not get into pricing here, but honestly it was worth it just for the time saved. You can check their website for details.

0 coins

Just want to add that if you're close to qualifying but not quite there, sometimes it's worth waiting a few weeks to file if you're still working. Every extra paycheck could push you over the threshold.

0 coins

That's a good point, though I'm hoping I don't need to file at all!

0 coins

Fingers crossed for you! But good to know your options just in case.

0 coins

The Washington ESD website has a tool where you can estimate your benefits before you apply. It's not perfect but gives you a rough idea if you qualify and how much you might get.

0 coins

I'll definitely check that out, thanks!

0 coins

Yeah that tool is helpful but sometimes the calculations are off. I'd still recommend talking to an actual person if you have questions.

0 coins

been unemployed twice in the past 5 years and qualified both times even though i had gaps between jobs. the key is making sure you worked in at least 2 quarters during your base period like everyone said

0 coins

Did the gaps between jobs cause any issues with your claims?

0 coins

not really, they just asked why i wasn't working during those periods. as long as you're honest about it there's usually no problem

0 coins

One thing people don't always realize is that if you worked in another state during your base period, those earnings might count too. Washington has agreements with other states to combine wages.

0 coins

Really? I worked in Oregon for part of last year before moving to Washington.

0 coins

Yeah, definitely mention that when you apply. They can request your wage records from Oregon and it might help you qualify or increase your benefit amount.

0 coins

Bottom line: 8 months of work is probably enough as long as you made decent money and it was spread across at least 2 quarters. Don't stress too much about it until you actually need to file.

0 coins

Thanks everyone for all the helpful info! Feeling much more confident about understanding the requirements now.

0 coins

Good luck! Hope you don't need to use this info but glad you're prepared.

0 coins

I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned and it really does work. Got connected to ESD in about 15 minutes when I'd been trying to call for days. Definitely recommend it if you need to talk to someone about your eligibility.

0 coins

Thanks for the recommendation! I'll keep that in mind if I need to call them.

0 coins

Same here, used it last month and it saved me so much frustration. The video demo they have really shows how simple it is.

0 coins

For what it's worth, I think Washington's requirements are actually pretty reasonable compared to some other states. $3,850 over 12-15 months isn't that hard to hit if you're working regularly.

0 coins

Agreed, and the alternative base period gives people a second chance if they don't qualify under the regular timeframe.

0 coins

True, though the quarter system can still be tricky for people who start jobs at odd times of the year.

0 coins

Just remember that even if you qualify for benefits, you still have to meet the ongoing requirements like job searching and filing weekly claims. The work requirement is just the first hurdle.

0 coins

Yeah I've heard the job search requirements are pretty strict now.

0 coins

They are, but as long as you're actually looking for work and keeping good records it's manageable.

0 coins

Hope this all helped! The main thing is don't let the complexity discourage you from applying if you think you might qualify. Worst case they say no and you know for sure.

0 coins

Definitely! This thread has been super helpful. Thanks everyone!

Glad we could help. Good luck with everything!
